151110 - The new scramble for Africa’s resources - looting or development?

The outside world has its eye increasingly set on Africa. Farming lands and new discoveries of oil, gas and minerals have made the continent interesting again - not only for former colonial powers and the United States but also China and India. Under the motto “trade no aid”, Africa’s poor are to be lifted by trade rather than aid.
Meanwhile, history shows that rich natural resources easily become a curse. Instead of creating jobs, better education and healthcare, large export revenues often lead to corruption, conflict and to countries becoming dependent on raw materials.
Who are the winners and who are the losers in the new scramble for Africa’s resources? Who ensures that the fortunes will benefit the citizens themselves, and what is required for a broad community development?
These issues were discussed at a live-streamed panel debate in Lund on 10 November.
Panellists included:
Margaret C Lee, leading Africa researcher and author of “The 21st Century Scramble for Africa”
Nnimmo Bassey, was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 2010 for discoveries about the humanitarian and ecological disaster as a result of the Nigerian oil industry.
Erik Esbjörnsson, Africa correspondent for Dagens Nyheter
Moderator:
Andreas Ekström, journalist
Introduction by Ellen Hillbom, Africa Researcher at Lund University

Cleveland Richardson She says “We”! Is she African? It is unsettling when non Africans gather in the university corridors in the western world and debate because they “are the EXPERTS on Africa”. Why couldn’t hold these debates in Africa and interact with people on the ground?

I say, let’s take these debates on the continent and interact with the people on the ground who do not need to get the “expertise” in the hallways of western universities.

@@georgemukarabemakinto-frie5034 The people are not their interests at this time, as they believe that they have successfully reduced them to 'minor' status, through their 'leaders'...the Afrikan continent's soil and it's contents is their main focus right now. Afrika is so vast & porous that these thieves can fly in an entire fleet of mining equipment without truly being noticed & just take oil, precious metals, stones etc. without so much as a question from anyone who may see them engaged in this criminal act. Our bushmen, fishermen, coastal dwellers...all need to be our watchmen on the continent. But you notice that these muzungus are the ones who love to occupy your coastal lands....ask yourselves why...

There is no new scramble for Africa's resources, it been going on for years if not centuries after the African slave trade and during colonialism to this present day.

@@charlesibekwe9750 once a cult, religion us planted into a society it becomes very potent and addictive. The places that have the biggest numbers of religious freedom also have governments that neglect their people the most. One must look at where these doctrines are coming from and for what purpose. The only way to combat this problem I think is to go to Greece and study their literatures, philosophies and even democracy. Legend has it many of their ideas were stolen from Antiquity, we need to get back to that source and develop our own ideas.

African leaders should go to the U.N. and walk out, leaving behind one diplomat to make the announcement: the U.N. as it stands is no longer acceptable. We have no permanent member on the security counsel. The E.U. is financially colonizing as it has for centuries. Some countries in the E.U. are holding our money. They loan our money back to us with interest. Our budgets are handicapped. We are forced to pay extra for infrastructure projects. No more. We will no longer be part of the U.N. as it stands. We say to the world: Russia, China, India and others, we are open for business. We will meet you at A.U. headquarters on such and such date. We will hear all offers and will discuss them with you. Leave without taking questions.

This program have been aired four (4) years ago, and seeing the program today almost at the end of 2019, i see a very vast difference when it comes to the continent of Africa and those countries named in the program involving the Chinese. Africa and Her leaders of now are taking responsibility in their own hands and i think they have woken up from their slumber for those who were slumbering. There are those West African countries in ECOWAS who are abandoning the French by using the ECO Currency instead of The CFA. Now that is a great move by these former French West African colonies so that they can manage their own economies without France involving in their monetary matters let alone printing their Notes from France and many more economical devastating stages in their economies of these countries. France is a disaster economically to these countries and now they are free using the ECO as their new legal tender for good. Thanks.

This is one of the most sensible groups who are telling the truth that Africa is being looted and polluted. Not much has changed as of December 2019. Plans have been made, but their execution and the effects thereof have not trickled down and around to all the people, thus most of Africa is still being looted and the majority of people struggling and not afforded the same opportunities to improve their lives.

A quality and very insighting debate. Skill training is still not a priority on the african list. We have for long been in the economy of prostitution, where we sell ourselves and the natural resources to survive. We have also blindly adopted a system of governance that works against consensus and continuity, so power struggle in post-colonial africa is a nightmare. And certain colonial nations are ready to make a mess to protect THEIR interests. The global economy needs our resources and how long would it take african know-how to exploit these resources? Men, wake up, wake up africa

Going forward, we must as Africa begin to control with whom and how we do business especially in regard to our natural resources.
