Most of that comes down to them being tech companies. They know how to make decent tech, electronics and so on, but they never consult someone that is an expert on actual locks. These companies probably dont care that much about the actual lock, in their eyes it is just a backup, that is more or less never going to be used and why spend money on that. In most cases, they probably just buy some off the shelf cheap lock mechanism and slap it on their tech product.
@DanStaal

But they didn't here. They went to some lengths to make a *unique* lock - a cheap one would fit the normal keys. They put effort into making a worse lock than anyone else.

@@DanStaal I want to look into it personally, but I'm not so sure it's a "unique" lock. My guess is that it's a cheap core common to the Chinese market (where I believe eufy is based) and they didn't bother to check to see if it would cause problems in the US market (and other markets potentially)
@Kram1032

I'm not even sure it's technically that cheap in this case, as they seemingly went out of their way to make a lock that fits a nonstandard key which surely would push up the price of production due to lower volumes?

This happened because an Eufy camera promised maximum privacy, while Linus discovered that this door camera was uploading the pictures to a server in China. Not surprised they made an unsecure lock with a non - copyable key. Thank you LPL for all the enlightenment about security, that you provide to all your subscribers. Greetings, Anthony

Locksmith here. I have come across these keys before, from a couple different cheap manufacturers. I have missed the different head before, and when it came back, i noticed it was a KW1 with a Schlege head. Once i recut it, i noticed that when i shoulder stopped it, the blade came short of the new blank. Shoulder stopping is standard in my area, as it guarantees that even if the key is shorter, you will notice because it will cut off most of the tip. After which, one can file/grind off the remaining finger below the chuck. The only way this could be an issue is if the key is code cut and not compared. I could see some newer locksmiths missing that (i was there). It is good to spread the knowledge of the different heads, as that is a pain, but having a shorter key shouldn't make a difference as long as the locksmith is competent.

Bloody hell, I knew exactly what this video was about right when I saw the title. As someone who works in a Frattallone's hardware store, I ran into this EXACT same issue a couple weeks ago. Customer brought keys in to be cut earlier in the morning, was cut a set of four SC1s and sent on her way. She came back later that evening while I was there and said her keys didn't work on her lock. She figured the were too thick, so I thought, "Oh, maybe she needs some SC9s instead!" (They're a tiny bit on the thinner side and have a slightly altered keyway.) So I inspected them and noticed the grooves were the complete opposite way around from a standard Schlage keyway. I then asked her what the keys go to and that's when she described her Eufy smart lock. (Same model and all.) Thankfully I compared her keys carefully against my KW1 blanks before I cut any and noticed the length difference. Though I think I might've used WR5 blanks in my case? Can't remember. We refunded her for three of her SC1s and just swapped the fourth with whatever I cut for her. She was nice enough about it after I explained what had happened, though! Haven't seen her or the key I cut for her since. :P But in any case, it's hugely frustrating for both parties. For one, it heavily inconveniences the customer. Besides having a nonstandard lock with an obscure (and insecure) keyway, it means they have to burn gas driving back and forth between home and the location they had their keys cut if the discrepancy isn't caught. AND it makes the vendor look bad. But even if the vendor catches the discrepancy, there's still a reasonable chance they may not know how to replicate the key, and the customer goes home empty handed (and possibly furious) anyways. I could see the justification for a nonstandard keyway on a smart lock if it offered a higher degree of security, but being wave-raked open is just not acceptable. Many thanks to you, LPL. Most of my lock and key knowledge comes from your videos, and it's been invaluable help with my job! Cheers.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting insanely pick-proof door locks anyways. Most theives are going to take the path of least resistance. Doors locked? Windows locked? Most theives aren't even going to bother at that point unless they know for sure something insanely valuable is inside. They'll just hit a house that isn't locked. Looking at the supplied key, the key itself looked like a bump key. (you know those full auto keys) Would a different pattern of pins make the wave rake less effective?
@Ghost_Os
@Ghost_Os Жыл бұрын
Might take a little longer, but probably wouldn't make much difference. I have a six pin Schlage I use as a practice lock. Two regular pins, two serrated, one mushroom, one spool; mix of high-low. It's meant for practicing SPP, but it can still be opened with a bogota in 5 - 10 seconds. You just have to rake and scrub at a variety of angles while playing with the tension. Adding a zero lift pin or two can sometimes frustrate or at least prolong raking or other kinetic type attacks, but it typically makes single pin picking easier, because it's essentially as if that pin stack doesn't exist; you never have to touch it, because it's already sitting at the shear line. If a zero lift stack is situated in front of a pin stack that has to be lifted very high, that can make it a little tricky, especially if it's coordinated with the binding order of that particular lock. In terms of security, it's best to think in layers: well-lit grounds and entrances where the lights can't be easily disabled; no big trees or high bushes which block the view of any point of entrance; if you have plants around your windows, make them the thickest, thorniest rose bushes you can get, and don't have a gap between them and the wall; no enclosed entrance-ways which are unsecured; all doors have at least two locks; make sure your deadbolts are properly installed and the bolt can extend fully into the frame; install anti-kick plates with long screws that effectively anchor your deadbolt into the stud, and thus distribute force throughout the entire stud; if you have an alarm, ideally it will make noise, but also actually call a dedicated monitoring company that will phone the police for you (this should use a cellphone service so a prospective burglar can't just cut your phoneline from outside... There's all sorts of things you can do, but at the end of the day, you don't have to try to turn your place into Fort Knox; it just has to be less appealing to the criminal element than the place down the road (or better yet, in an entirely different community). As long as you're not being specifically targeted, that should be enough to prevent you being randomly targeted. So just roleplay yourself as a burglar; what would make you pass up a house? Implement those things. This is probably a lot more than you were asking about, but there you go 😆

@@JohnSmithShields Sure. I mean we could talk about shatter-proof laminates, 'decorative' steel bars, yada-yada... But at the end of the day, if someone wants to get in bad enough, and is willing to destroy obstacles to do so, yeah, they're going to get in. Steal a car and ram it through a door or a wall... Buy a thermic lance for a couple grand and cut a hole... Show up with a drill and a 5 inch holesaw and make a hole in your door to reach through... That's why I said the main thing is to make your place unappealing. So unless they specifically want your house for some reason, they'll rather hit somewhere that will represent a lower risk - less time, less noise, less exposure... I tell people to get a dog, or at least make it look like they have one from the outside. People say, 'ehh, criminal will just shoot the dog' - some might, if they have a gun... Yet time and again when asked, people who are locked up for breaking and entering say they avoided houses if they thought there was a dog; even the ones who were armed. Dobermans tended to be the breed of most concern. Rottweilers would probably be a discouraging detail as well, but I'm speculating on that one. Point is, avoid doing things that make yourself a specific target, and then take measures that make you less appealing a random target than the place on the other side of town.

Whilst indeed, it's a really stupid move to change the key's apparent brand... i have to question if someone is that stupid as to not identify the issue with the key, and by someone i mean the most basic person involved in the process of making a key, someone who at the very minimum, knows to check a key to see if the points and valleys match. At least here in Europe, ... across pretty much all of the EU, i've never had the key maker not check the keys one on top of another even as a cursory glance. That said, i still question the value of security in US, doesn't matter what the look looks like or uses on the outside, the inner mechanism is a really stupid design that offers little to no actual safety and can be easily popped open with a prybar (outside of the door being made out of 2 mm thick metal, to actually resist deflection). So the entire thing is flawed and rotten from the core. I would never use such a thing, and never have had. The only time i used that base body is for bathroom doors. That's about the long and short of the trust one can place on that style of a mechanism that has no structure with the actual door, and which by its very installation, further weakens an already cheap (for the most part of what's being used) door.

Lol to not realize the key is longer your locksmith must not have made a key ever in his life before xD always check your work after cutting the keys...

I’ve gotta say, as a professional locksmith, we notice stuff like this. ( mostly) It’s our job.

Problem is that here in America most big box stores have machines that any schlub with a quarter of a brain can use to cut keys, and most of them would have no idea what was wrong

Eufy sends unencrypted footage from your private "local storage" security cameras, direct to the literal Chinese government. Not even Eufy denies this any more, though they did for quite a while. I was hoping you'd mention that too as it is relevant to good security, brand integrity, and a smart product from the range which as you mentioned can sync with other Eufy products.

Fairly common on Chinese made locksets as of late. Got a "Cielsa Dawn" branded knob with lock off Amazon (just needed something to keep the kids out of an interior door, it isn't for actual security) and found the exact same situation. Schlage looking key, with KW1 keyway, but about 1.5mm shorter than the actual KW1 key. Luckily they included 3 keys and I also cut my own key blanks, so it wasn't difficult to work around, but as you say, the average consumer will be quite frustrated.

Is there at least one lock in this universe that *does not suck* ? I saw so many videos of this guy and I now have a lock-sistential crisis. "Why do locks exist if they can be opened by anybody in half a minute?"

Unrelated to this video, I see multiple channels over on Rumble that appear to be you, and have much of your catalog. Are any of them legitimately you, or are they all stealing your content?

Fun fact: Eufy is also involved in another scandal -- their cameras, which proport to be completely private and secure, send a bunch of pictures, unencrypted, to a server that you can access via a simple url. And when you cancel your service, **Eufy keeps the pictures**. So yeah, chances are that physical security isn't the only dimension this system is lacking in.

I love your reviews of bad locks, but I'd really like to see a series of "good" locks (or "better" locks, if you can't find any good ones out there)!

If you want a good lock, look into the Bowley locks. He couldn't find a way to pick them at all.

@@coopercummings8370 They have been picked. To OP, find a quality locksmith in your area, tell them you want to swap all the locks in your house for keyed-alike ones, tell them you want them to be hard to pick, bump, and rake. They'll either start talking "security pins" and "spring pressure" or you should go somewhere else.

Imagine the rage this person would feel when they find out all the Eufy cameras they also installed are not secure and eufy uploads the data to their cloud even if you don’t want them too.

Someone uses the security flaw to get their address and remotely watch their own cameras to see them leave, then turns up with a wave rake to steal all their valuables. They’ve created the complete opposite of incentive for brand loyalty.

Those wifi locks should send a message to the owner “you’re lock is under attack” while it’s being picked. Then you could send an over ride message that could disable the mechanical part. But I guess that’s pointless if it only takes 10 seconds to take the thing open.
