Nothing like it! I'm 73 and learned at 13 years old. If you're lucky you'll have an older friend that knows pool. Best to have a teacher to teach you the basics and how to play position . The best teacher will tell you to always play to win but if you lose you've learned a valuable lesson to accept the loss with class. This effect is called cut-induced throw. There's a little bit of friction at the point of contact which drags the object ball ever so slightly off the center line: about 5 degrees outside the cut angle. When is cut-induced throw the strongest? That's right, slow stun shots at a 45 degree angle. You can compensate for this effect by using the techniques in the video: aiming to overcut the ball and letting it throw back on line, or using outside spin to throw the ball in the other direction, effectively cancelling the effects out. You can also reduce throw by hitting at higher speeds, or hitting with a large amount of topspin or backspin. Note, this is a physics property that happens at the contact point of the balls, so the quality of stroke or whatever material your cue is made out of will not have any effect on throw, contrary to what the video claims. A cue ball arriving at an object ball at the same angle, speed, and spin will throw the object ball in exactly the same manner regardless of how it was cued. However, if you do not cue well you will not be able to aim consistently and precisely which will make the compensation very hard to practice.

To get out of snooker using one cushion, imagine the cushion is a mirror. Simply aim the cueball toward the rail, at what would be the reflection of the ball you want to hit off that cushion. Adjust appropriately for side etc. With a little practice, it's easy. Same principal for doubling, into a middle pocket for example FROM ANYWHERE. If you aim a ball toward the middle pocket of the table next to you, you won't be far wrong from doubling into your middle pocket. Don't mock if you misunderstand, it works perfectly.

Bob. Pros are good at getting out of snookers I agree but there is no magic formula. The markings of the table can be a great help, don't forget also the angles are 90 degrees and good players can judge the path of the cue ball when going around these angles. Generally, players will prefer to go around the angles when simply trying to hit the ball rather than play a one cushion escape, even though they are good at them as well. All it takes is lots of practise and a retentive memory.

sunddowner. Some players still prefer to play the shot without what is known as helping side and stick to plain ball. The shot where the cut to the right is played with right hand side is tricky for any player and is used sparingly but is needed for positional purposes occasionally.

In my area we call it opposite or transverse english. It's always a KEY point to mention the tempo of your stroke vrs. the distance from que to object ball as the english will snap over and change... i.e. Effren Reyes!

Great channel barry, appreciate your time and effort. I played for 6 years, age 12-18 in a club once a week, occasionally a bit more but very little since then. My highest break is 74. I've always played with my chin maybe 6 inches off the cue. People always commented that I was a very good potter, but that I need to put my chin on the cue. A 74 break and 60's and 50's is not bad, along with the potting. I always argued this when told. Am I missing something or is it just asthetics? I could understand if my highest break was 10 and I couldn't pot a ball.

European. So much depends on the reason for the chin being off the cue. In my case there are certain shots where I cannot get my chin to the cue because of arthritis in the neck and spine. Some players try to play with ordinary glasses, achieve reasonable results but would be able to get lower if they purchased snooker glasses. You have reached a reasonable standard but I would certainly advise try to get lower, its a little like sighting a rifle, you would not shoot from the hip. Also keeping the head still during the shot is essential, using the dominant eye correctly is also important and these points are easier and more consistent when the chin is on the cue.

I think most people would take the left side of the cue because in general the ball has to go to the right to make it into the hole. But the ball also has to go slightly left, because its a diagonal line. So with mire finesse the right spin is the optimal shot being that snooker is a game of finesse, and this shot allows you to take your shot with less effort. All giving you a better chance of landing the cue where you want it

I actually find the right hand side slightly easier than the left hand side on this shot. Left hand side I jaw it, right hand side I pot it. I'm left handed but it's still right hand side on a pot to the right. I just find the throw of the right spin easier to judge on this shot. The Snooker Shed. Yes and no. Certainly anyone who can pot the ball without side will have greater success with side than someone who struggles to pot the ball at all, or only occasionally. However, someone who is struggling may benefit from applying a trace of side. That's the problem with players and with coaching, one size does not fit all.

I much prefer the check side version from the left and hit the right, but then I prefer it with running side from the other side. I guess I just prefer right hand side. Dear Barry i love watching your tutorial. Thanks for ur Great job. may i get some help from u? I am from Chengdu, china, hometown of professional Zhou Yuelong. I am right-handed with left eye dominant. I ever made one century and in average roughly one 50+ every 25 frames. I have no problem hitting left side of the object ball but big problem on right side. I tend to cut thick on right side of object ball, especially for long pots more than 70% missed. I notice that i often play with right hand side on cue ball that i think to some extent causes the problem. However When i, on purpose, adjust my cue ball without any side i could hardly aim. I mean i can't aim to the correct place When i get down to shot in case the cue ball without any side. I can feel i lose ability to aim precisely When hitting the right side of object ball, whereas i am never bothered hitting left side of object ball, immediately after getting down, my eye locked the correct place on object ball. It is the biggest technical issue i suffer now. If it is resolved, i am confident in half year i can accomplish at least one century break every week. Thanks Barry i look forward ur solution.

Ewan. You can improve positional play in many ways, simply by playing and trying to predict where the cue ball will end up will be beneficial. One of the best routines is the double line up where the balls are positioned in two lines down the centre of the table. The reds are obliquely placed so that as one ball is potted it allows the next to be potted and so. This is one of John Higgin's favourite practises, not a bad recommendation.

Dhiraj. If you can cue at the bottom of the ball or even below centre it is certainly possible to play shots with a limited amount of screw even when the position of the cue ball necessitates raising the butt. Unfortunately so much depends on the skill of the player.

Horror. Providing the black didn't move the penalty is four points. Don't forget though that a foul and a miss can be called against you and the balls replaced.

As the video attempts to show, applying left hand side on left cuts makes the shot tricky. Please remember that not all players prefer to use side and will play with centre ball striking.

@meee. This is a question that I am often asked. I believe that at the moment of striking you should be looking at the object ball, however, some players do look at the cue ball at the moment of striking but certainly looking at the object ball is a lot more common and in my opinion better. As for looking at the pocket, this can be seriously off putting during an angle shot and could result in physical movement or certainly off putting in terms of your concentration.

How can one get the cue ball so far up the table when the cue ball is in line or nearly in line with the blue ball. To answer that from my experience, one needs to "play the pocket" or "use all of the pocket." Meaning shoot the blue not straight and actually cut it a tiny bit with ridiculous levels of top or bottom. Sidespin gripping the long rail can help to get farther up the table. Prerequisite: Great cue power

how to find vision centre? i watched your video where you point a stick and bring your face towards it, but nic barrow said that is wrong , bcaz if it forces us to chosoe one eye depending on head position. i really have hard time finding my vision centre as i am used to centre chin for years and it is wrong. can you please confirm that your method works perfectly? or any other method to find vision centre? tnx

Gupp. Your head position will influence the position of your cue in relation to your vision centre, the demonstration will work only when your head is in the vertical position. There are several test that you can do to determine your dominant eye and generally your cue will be positioned towards that eye, sometimes even directly under that eye. Most players find that the sight right method helps them to determine their vision centre.

@@BarryStarkSnookerCoach i played close to my dominant eye for few months and i still miss long blues by atleast 12 inches or more to left of pocket. saw many coaches and they found no technical issue, and i went to Dr and said my left eye is %10 stronger but i am right eye dominant . however i have been playing for 10 years now, but 5 years ago i had back disk surgery and after that my weight distrubution changed. i can see that my cue alignment is also not perfect so not sure if this is bcaz of the vision centre of weight distribution. what should i do? do we lean forward and put lots of weight on bent knee and bridge arm? thank you heaps

@Afghan. When you look at the object ball is largely a personal thing, it is doubtful that this is causing your inaccuracy. You must be moving somewhere in the process or aiming wrong or indeed delivering the cue incorrectly. Most players with normal eyesight lift their eyes to the object ball as the cue is moving backwards for the final time before delivery.

I hate that shot - for the throw reasons ....I am considering a titanium ferrle slight question ...you know that shot where you straighten the pot or the slight soft swerve shot if you know what i mean can you still play those shots with titanium? Byrom. This is so difficult to answer simply because some players like the titanium ferrule and other players don't. Kyren likes the fact that the titanium ferrule doesn't throw as much when using side and can play all the shots needed. I know of two other professional players who tried them but soon had them taken off again and returned to the brass ferrule, I am afraid you will only know if and when you try them.

So with using the side do you aim the line of the pot as though it was a full ball angle ie straight into middle of pocket, and then add the side. And with no side, aim thinner (ie the line to miss the middle of the pocket to hit the far jaw) and NOT add side. Which is better? Surely playing without side is easier and then just adjust your aim (ie where the white contacts the object ball) to allow for the 'squeeze' effect! And I assume you would only ever use the non-helping side for position purposes, otherwise why make the shot harder!

V08. I agree you would only make the shot harder deliberately (non-helping side) for positional purposes. Some players like to play these shots plain ball (without side) but most like to use helping side where you aim when using the side depends on so many things, eg How well you hit the ball (talent) How much your cue throws the cue ball. The distance between the cue ball and object ball.) The power on the shot. All these things support what you say about plain ball striking yet we still prefer to play the shot with side, generally. Just practise the shot a lot to make your own decision.

I have a question If the cue ball is kiss (touching) with a red.. can it be possible that I can play a color and pot a red with the color i am playing? Is it a foul?

Usman. The only time you can use a colour to pot a red is when you have been given a free ball as the result of foul and the red is the ball that is on. In your scenario the red must be the ball that is on and the fact that the cue ball is touching a red you cannot be awarded a free ball so it would be a foul.

Bharath. I am afraid it is impossible to develop your game to an accepted level without getting onto a snooker table. Certainly you can practise straight cueing on anything that is a similar height to a snooker table but that is only a fraction of the skills you will need. Sorry that I cannot be of any more help.

Sir if red on the table is on the edge of pocket and i played a shot but my cue ball did not touched the red and very very closely passes the red and after few second that red putted automatically without playing of next player is it a foul or what 🙂🙄

Ihsan. Kyren has always been good at this shot but just like anyone else he will get it wrong sometimes, One thing I do know though is, when he gets it wrong he will go away and practise it.

I believe the spots are not inside of the D. Once when playing billiards I was told that I had the cue ball on the line and that was not allowed. You can roll it backwards half a millimeter or something and it will be good though.

M G. Yes on the line is okay. However why take the risk sometimes the ball will roll a little on the spot and when you look along the baulk line more than half the ball is beyond the baulk line so you will be pulled for a foul.

This is just a way of explaining which side of the table the shot is being played from. e.g. Standing at the baulk end of the table and looking down the table the green will be spotted on the left of baulk and the yellow on the right. So any shot played from the left side of the table may be referred to as the green side of the table, with the right side being referred to as the yellow side.

I think the left hand english/side hit on that shot has more to do with the transfer of spin. Left spin on the cue puts some right spin on the object ball. This increases the odds of the ball going in. For example, if you come up a hair too far to the left then the right spin will cut the angle of the bounce off the cushion while at the same time slightly accelerating the ball toward the pocket. Using right english/side would do the opposite. With right side you almost have to be dead on. Which as you point out isn't that easy with side since the balls get thrown slightly. Anyway, that's my 2 cents on it... which won't even buy you a piece of gum these days.

The better you hit the ball refers to how clean you make the strike / stroke , every shot is a single stroke or at least it should be when you are queueing well , it is not so easy to queue well for every shot , usually when you feel relaxed and confident you hit the ball well , also the more power you apply the less chance of hitting the ball well , no voodoo in snooker m8 nor mumbo jumbo , if you don't understand something , that's ok just ask nicely and i am sure someone will be nice enough to explain it for you

Dear Barry i love watching your tutorial. Thanks for ur Great job. may i get some help from u? I am from Chengdu, china, hometown of professional Zhou Yuelong. I am right-handed with left eye dominant. I ever made one century and in average roughly one 50+ every 25 frames. I have no problem hitting left side of the object ball but big problem on right side. I tend to cut thick on right side of object ball, especially for long pots more than 70% missed. I notice that i often play with right hand side on cue ball that i think to some extent causes the problem. However When i, on purpose, adjust my cue ball without any side i could hardly aim. I mean i can't aim to the correct place When i get down to shot in case the cue ball without any side. I can feel i lose ability to aim precisely When hitting the right side of object ball, whereas i am never bothered hitting left side of object ball, immediately after getting down, my eye locked the correct place on object ball. It is the biggest technical issue i suffer now. If it is resolved, i am confident in half year i can accomplish at least one century break every week. Thanks Barry i look forward ur solution.
