I learned from a Brionny Penn lecture at University of Victoria on 'Nature and Spirituality', that the entire Pacific Northwest coastline was repopulated with plants and animals after the last ice age approx. 12,000 yrs ago, from Mquqᷱin , the Brooks Peninsula on Vancouver Island, which had not been crushed by the massive sheets of ice. So it is important to remember, that we should not be overcome with the fear of all that we are losing, but rather remember that it is the small pockets, of ecosystems, culture, and spirit, that we are saving and protecting that will be the seeds for the future.

I would really love there to be presciribed burns, and digging up of the soil, in Beacon Hill Park, in Victoria BC, where the Camas fields have dwindled over the years. I remember several decades ago how resplendent and violet-blue the hill was in the late spring with the blooming Camas, the bulbs of which were traditional food staples cultivated by the indigenous peoples of this area. Over the years grasses have taken over, and probably strangled out the camas.
