In video 1541 you'll see some of the new Paclocks that just went up for sale in Home Depot! Looks like Master Lock FINALLY has some decent competition for the commercial lock business, and these new designs are engineered for specific applications. Of course, there are some "normal" padlocks as well.
LockPickingLawyer reviewed some of these too and you can see his videos at: • [931] PacLock is Comin... and • [932] More PacLock Pro...

Much appreciated on the props for our packaging, BB! Lots of time and thought went into it. Believe it or not, you mentioned we deserved some sort of award. Well, we did actually win an award for our plastic packaging that the shackled padlocks used. It was an award in the packaging world... Those trailer locks (UCS-81A & UCS-82A) have had years and years of development and testing. Appreciate the attention to detail your videos always show and, of course, the fair review. Just so everyone knows, PACLOCK simply sent BB and LPL the products with no strings attached other than "just do what you do, don't pull punches, and be fair." No money, no promise of anything... again, really appreciate you taking the time BB.

Awesome design on the trailer locks Paclock. I hate the hasps that come on utility trailers. My friend recently lost thousands of dollars in tools from someone twisting his padlock off with two 2x4's screwed together around the lock. Your design eliminates that flaw with utility trailers

I like how even though it cost more to make its 100% recyclable Be even better yet if you folks at Paclock maybe bought them back or offered to have them shipped back at your cost. and then reuse. Just a thought :)

BB brings up a great point in this video regarding the flush placement of the lock against the door that I didn't see on LPL's review of the puck-type locks. When those are flush getting a pick to work in that scenario is extremely challenging. You might consider adding a type of 'L' shaped steel extension to the installed hasp that hangs out about, what, maybe 4, or 4.5 inches from the keyway - kinda like how you have the metal sticking outward around the hasp to protect the puck lock from brute force attacks, the 'L' shape extension would stick out to obstruct direct access to the keyway. This would prevent pickers from using a pick gun as it would create an angled entry to anything longer than the key and inhibit access to the pins.

6061 alloy is a precipitation-hardened aluminium alloy, containing magnesium and silicon as its major alloying elements. It is used to manufacture airplane structures (it is more corrosion resistant than 2024), also yachts and car frames, from there the manufactures used the term "aircraft grade"._

The most unusual I see on these new locks is on the packaging it says MADE IN USA

He wasn't a locksmith but, he was in maintenance at a college and he did all of the re-keying there. The local locksmith offered him to buy his business but dad thought he was too old for that type of venture. The local high school would let us remove the combination locks left behind from the previous school year off of the school lockers. For picking against a flat surface you need some curved picks, something a casual picker won't have, but perhaps a determined thief hitting multiple trailers in a lot.

Or agent, I do not think picking is that popular among thieves, some maybe, but the real appeal of picking is that it is covert and hard to detect. If you need to make a copy of certain documents or plant a bug, you will raise ton of suspicion by forceful entry.

"Aircraft grade" usually means that the alloy is one of 6061, 7075, or 2024. It's not particularly significant because 6061 is probably the most common aluminum alloy that you'll see for bar stock etc. I'd really love to see locks of this sort with 303 stainless bodies. Also, those roll pins for retaining the shackle could be replaced with solid hardened dowel pins, although reaming the holes for a press-fit would be an additional operation.

So in the trailer and container locks, the only thing holding the cores in is that one bolt into the end. Doesn't that mean you could just use a core puller, sheer that bolt off, and manually actuate the lock?
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 5 жыл бұрын
Intheory, yes that could work but I think the screw is threaded deeply into the core, so it would depend on what would shear first; the core screw or the screw you put into the core for the slam hammer. I'm betting the latter. Try it and let me know. 😀

I like this type of lock for the intended purpose, as it will also protect the seal from tampering if such seal is present. Edit: this applies to both of the first two locks. I also wanted to point out that most shipping containers, and many (but far from most) semitrailers with this type of latch, have 4 latching mechanisms on the doors, and shipping containers often have doors at each end for a grand total of 8 places to put one of these locks you featured second in this video.
@sillykristy
@sillykristy 5 жыл бұрын
The trailers I pull now have a roll door with a latch that doesn't work with the first two locks shown here, so I use an Abloy Enforcer 341 padlock that I got at a huge discount from my company. If it were my choice, and if I were pulling a swing-door trailer, I'd use the second lock featured in this video.

We will... once we're better positioned in the retail market we'll cut it down. For now, though, we need to catch that "Pro" customer's eye as he walks by.

One thing that concerned me when I saw how easy everything was being swapped out was the possibility of vibrations loosening the retaining screws and potentially the whole guts falling out. I don't know if the screw positions would prevent them from vibrating out in situ but it could be a good thing to have a bit of loctite on the screws.
@EgorKaskader

The guts are retained though, and the screw holding the retainer plate would back into the core if loosened, so that hopefully wouldn't be a problem.

I am new around here, but I wonder how much security you give up by going with aluminum. It's certainly going to look banged up a lot faster. That's not a huge deal, but aluminum is _relatively_ soft.

Not too much... compared to hardened steel, obviously more. But lots of people by brass padlocks without a second thought. Brass and aluminum are generally comparable. I always find it a bit unfair for aluminum getting the "you're not strong" label when brass is considered strong. Our CNC machines cut through brass just as fast as they do aluminum... The one big different... weight. Brass obviously feels heavy in your hand so you naturally think "strong." But we've sold lots and lots of aluminum locks over the years (as has Master) and I can't remember a call from anyone saying "this aluminum just didn't hold up as I expected."

Is the black sleeve the core is in made from some kind of plastic or aluminum?
@PacificLockCompany
@PacificLockCompany 4 жыл бұрын
It's made from the same aluminum as the lock. We mill it out here at the factory and then it gets a Type II anodizing in black. We get this question a lot, so obviously, our marketing isn't at the top of its game as explaining this plastic vs. aluminum.

Aircraft grade means nothing. There is no specific "grade" of aluminum used in the aero industry. They use different kinds for different applications just like everyone else.

I thank you very much for your advice on that 4 pin brinks I was having so much trouble with but I kept at it and I got it. I had gotten it once by sheer luck I'm sure but I have gotten it several times now. I am way down on my luck, just lost a great job because I broke a rule that I had no idea existed, I've lost my home, I'm living out of a extended stay hotel and 3 weeks ago I get into a wreck totaling my car. So if you happen to have any spare locks you're done with and would be willing to donate please let me know. This hobby is the only thing keeping me same At the moment. And i know many are gonna say who cares about my son story but I'd figured I'd give it a shot. I'm wanting to become a locksmith cause i enjoy it very much and what better job than one you enjoy going to. Either way thank you for years of entertainment and basically teaching me how to pick locks. PS, I love your ending statement Stay safe and stay legal.

@paclockpres.9805

No, it's also made from aluminum and then Type 3 "Hard" Anodized (versus typical Type 1 or Type 2)... Hard Anodizing gives a level of hardness to the outermost shell of the aluminum so that it can withstand the travel back and forth better.

You would only need one of those container locks, you need to operate both handles on a container or a trailer with multiple bars on a door to open it

Honestly the exchangeable core is an awesome design, and I’m certain if they made a version for door locks (like the ones contained in a handle or just below the handle) they could make massive marketing boosts in the landlord area. Right now people have to potentially buy keys built to be broken off inside the keyways to stop tenants that don’t pay their rent from getting back in long enough to get a lock smith to change the lock. Random as heck rant and idea but, y’know, just tossing that out there

You may not be able to pull the guts out of the lock with a slide hammer, but that's Really small screw folding the core in. A slide hammer could probably break that, then you just use a screwdriver. 6:00

In order to pick this lock, it looks like I would need a lock pick with a handle that was bent 30 to 45 degrees above the axis of the pick and cylinder, and a fulcrum to help apply pressure.
