I came to your clinic in 2021 specifically asking you to evaluate my pain and refer me for diagnosis because my primary care doctor simply dismissed my suffering. You had me fill out your questionnaire , ran your fingers down my spine and said I needed to learn to regulate my vagus nerve and would give me a contact for a training program in Alberta. Needless to say I was crushed by being dismissed once more. I continued however to push forward with the encouragement of my physiotherapist and under her guidance I was referred to a rheumatologist in London ON. I finally have received a definitive diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylosis and am being treated with biologics. Your program may work well for some but running people through a systematic program such as yours leaves others, such as myself, to continue to suffer. From your videos I truly believed you would finally be able to direct me to find the cause of my years of pain. I was devastated by once again having my hopes dashed.

I'm sorry for your poor experience of being dismissed by doctors in clinics. I too experienced this for around 10 year prior to finally being diagnosed with AS. I try to remember that doctors are humans too. I doubt any of our doctors intended to dismiss us and thought the saying, "if you hear hooves, it's probably not a zebra". I've had two major disabling diagnosis go misdiagnosed for decades so I know this saying well. If you hear a common complaint, "back pain" think acute injury not AS the rare Zebra. If a patient complains of severe fatigue and sleepiness during the day think side effect of medication, not the rare zebra of narcolepsy. Well they were wrong twice. I have also been a prescribing provider in healthcare and know there were mistakes made. We are all human. It sucks for us to be dismissed and for ten plus years to go by seeing 20 different specialists to finally be diagnosed properly... but that's our burden of having fairly rare diseases along with actually having the disease... as if that weren't enough. TBH after diagnosis the treatment has only helped some. I'll take it, not complaining, but it's also not really that life changing.

Thank you for another great video, Dr. Furlan. These exercises are just what I was looking for. And your demonstrations will make it much easier to maintain proper form, etc. I haven't had a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis, but it sounds like a possibility in describing my condition. Recently I had a therapeutic massage and the masseur/PT mentioned that my lumbar spine seemed like it was too straight, rather than having the proper curvature. I looked at my MRI, and it seemed to confirm. At least to my untrained eye. Being that I have constant issues with my SI and facets joints, and have a sibling with an autoimmune disease, I'm really wondering about the AS. No matter what, I feel that the exercises will help. Thanks again.

I’ve asked my specialist physio about these exercises and I’ve tried them already before seeing her. Some of these exacerbate my issues, the stretches where you pull knee to chest separately rather than together always worsen my pain, and dropping the legs across to the side also have to be done very carefully and gently or they can really make everything worse. I urge caution and moderation with any new exercise for anyone with AS. Gentle swimming works for me. Starting off slowly to warm up and don’t push too hard, also start off with 15 mins and building up. If I swim every second day, my pain is much more manageable. None of these kinds of exercises are any where near as effective as swimming.

@ Thanks! I love that video as well and plan to start using those exercises in my workout routine. I asked about the AS exercises because when I pulled my lower back several years ago, my PT had me do many of the exercises in your AS video and they were wonderful. I would like to start doing them again but can’t recall exactly which ones they were so was wondering if there were any you would advise against. I’ve not seen my PT for years (thank goodness) so if I were to ask him about the AS exercises, I would need to track him down and make an appointment (which I can do but hoping you can advise). Anyway, really glad I found your site!

I have been doing these exercises every day for many years. I can only do the ones of these exercises that do not involve any rotation. When rotation enters the equation, it feels like I am fused and is extremely painful. My x-rays and MRIs do not suggest AS but I have had all the symptoms of AS for decades now. It is so frustrating. I am very active as a backcountry skier and a trail runner. But I am growing more and more stiff every years with more and longer periods of disabling chronic pain. I am scared and frustrated and I am getting no answers. Every doctor says everything is normal. Right now I have such extreme pain in my right heel that sometimes I cannot walk at all. The heel pain has been constant for four months now and the doctors cannot point to any injury in my achilles.
