After getting my shop reorganized and cleaned up (somewhat). I decided to start working on some needed shop accessories. This video is the first of a playlist documenting these builds. I am discussing and building Jam Chucks. I hope you enjoy watching. Take care.

Glad to see you back on the lathe. Enjoy your retirement keeping busy at something is what will keep you alive. I had just turned 55 when the power company I worked for decided to try and get 2000 people to early retire or just leave offered a buy out package I just couldn't turn down. I think they only got about 1500 to take the package. Since it was one pension plan for everyone they had to offer the package to everyone. Hoping for clerks and office staff to take it but turned out mostly trades people who would have no trouble finding another job were the ones that took it. Within 6 months they were looking for replacements for them. That was 18 years ago and I started woodworking after retirement. Watched many who took the package die within the first 6 months to a year. Their job was their life, worked went home and watched TV until bedtime I guess after retirement they just watched TV until they died. I guess the moral is keep busy and live long. I like your idea of gluing the shelf liner down, I always just draped it over next time I would have to hunt for another piece of liner, will be gluing mine from now on. Keep the videos coming I generally pick something up from each.

Timing couldn't be more perfect, I've been pondering how I'm going to do the bottom of the last bowl I did that has a natural and no flat surface to mount on the Cole Jaws. Also, looking forward to seeing you build the other things you mentioned, like the gantry for the camera, and steady rest. Again, thanks for sharing Stephen, love you work.

Thank you Diemen again. Glad you found this project useful. I turn and cleanup the bottoms of all my Natural Edged and Warped bowls with these. I am still working on a plan for the Camera system. My other was just never very good although it did serve the purpose for about 4 years. Can't complain. Those projects you mentioned are coming soon though. Take care!

So glad you're back Stephen! I hope you had a nice break and are back and ready to show us some of your wonderful woodturning skills and projects. I'm hoping to hear more about your experience with the new Grizzly lathe. I might be in the market for something close to that model soon.
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Greg. I will give a review on the new lathe very soon. I do not really have anything negative to say. There are however a couple of small things that could be improved. I will say that I believe there is no other in it's size that is better and the price is still premium even with the import tariffs.
@JamesBondDZero7Mi6
@JamesBondDZero7Mi6 4 жыл бұрын
@@StephenOgle Good to hear you'll be doing a review of that lathe. After all the research I've done, I think you bought the right lathe for bowl turning, etc. I heard you mention burning out a treadmill motor. I learned a few tricks since I burned out my first treadmill motor for my wood lathe. The main key is having a large capacitor. I'm using a 7,700 uf, 200 VDC capacitor and it did the trick. Might be a little oversized but better to be on the larger size rather than too small. I also learned that these treadmill motors are best run at close to 80% of their rated continuous RPM. If they run too slow, the motor will get too hot, and also the controller might burn out. I'll have to send you a link with my lathe photos and setup. It's very unique being from the late 1800's and from my family's winery and cider mill operation that was in business up until the 1930's and closed due to prohibition. The bed of the lathe is made from two 6" x 8" southern yellow pine beams and these are over 13 feet long. My capacity is a swing of just over 14" and a spindle length of just over 8 feet. I sure would love to have an 18" to 20" swing capacity for larger bowls. I bet some people would love to be able to turn those old wooden porch poles with my lathe capacity.

Your lathe is so massive compared to my HF 12x33 LOL! The banjo is HUGE!! Good tip on hot gluing the shelf liner onto the jam chuck. I made my first one recently (just started turning after years of watching you and Frank Howarth) and used the same product for padding but didn't think about using hot glue to fasten it to the wood. Also, thanks for inspiring me to start wood turning! I like your plain style and "common man" image. I also live in GA and have already videoed a little of my work just so I could see my technique. Stuart

Thank you Stuart. Glad you enjoy my channel and perhaps found some useful information. I use hot glue for all sorts of temporary jobs. I used my G0462 for 10 years and loved it. It is basically the same as your HF only a little larger. It went to a good home when I bought the G0766. You are right, it is pretty huge and surprised me once I got it assembled. It is the perfect lathe for an old man. It is quiet and powerful.
