It makes complete sense that the armor stand floats on the fences and walls. Mojang coded the fence (and wall) so that it has a hitbox of 1.5 blocks tall, but the model is only 1 block tall. This results in anything on top of it floating and also preventing things from escaping.

I don't think survived is entirely the right word, as for a time that crafting recipe was removed with the rest It was subsequently added back years later, but there was a large gap where it wasn't craftable

The full-block chests were from a time when Minecraft used "BlockEntities", blocks that behaved like entities. When Java edition happened with the use of "NBT" Entity properties, BlockEntities became obsolete and phased out for entities that collided and behaved like blocks, which was more simple than having three types of things in the game 🙂🟨 Horse armor was made as a joke towards Skyrim, Skyrim horse armor being an expensive DLC and Horse Armor being one of the rare loots in chests, which is why there is no horse armor (nor saddle) recipes: it's designed to be a bragging rights/luxury item, making the chests containing them loot boxes 😅
