When I was a splicer all those years ago, I did the same more times than I can count, however I didn’t have all those fancy tools. We used knives to strip and pencil the cable. Not rubber, but poly and XLP. Sanding the cable we always taped the conductor so metal, aluminum or cu onto the insulation. Nice job!

That ratcheting pencilling tool...love it. We use the older style that you hand twist. Really clean work, tho!

Im relatively new to cable splicing. Going for my NCSCB cert next month. Have a quick question about what do you would use to build up voids between compression lug and insulation when hand taping to prevent corona from developing?

I haven't heard of WAGO. I will look into it. This is a technique we went to when the took hookbill knives away.

Good video. I have been splicing for 29 years. We would sue a split connector for a soldered connection. It looks like aluminum cable. Would you use a pressed connection instead???

What’s the ratcheting tool you are using to cone down to the semiconductor?

It is a Ripley ratcheting tool with different size inserts to pencil the cable. Works really good as long as the blade is sharp.

Speed system. We tried some Ripley but cost was way higher. Our urd folks use the Ripley designed for 1/0 xlp. 3 phase urd we work from 1/0 15kv up to 1250mcm 35kv. Speed systems was more cost effective. I'm comfortable with them. I am a trainer now so I am lucky to get to try new tools before they're purchased.
