Hey Steve. I’ve played competitive tennis for over 40 years and have a ballistic serve that is the envy of all. I watched your video out of curiosity and I approve 💯. Keep up the good work and I will recommend your content to anyone I know that is trying to improve their game. Thanks for promoting the great game of tennis!

Coach Steve, you are helping tennis loving people so much. Thank you for the excellent instructions. You got your knowledge hard way and we are lucky to get it for free with your generosity.

Love this series. Great tips. Explanation of the biomechanics is a bit off IMO, though, with the shoulder. The power comes from shoulder internal rotation. Like 70% +. And it doesn’t stop. The shoulder movement you’re explaining here only gets into shoulder addiction. And you are correct most people try to get that power from addiction. And they also over rotate. Also the pronation is not coming from the elbow and forearm. It should be coming mostly from shoulder internal rotation. Otherwise elbow injury like I did to myself. Shoulder internal rotation is the KEY to power. And the starting point is the flexibility to stretch out into deep external rotation. I have bad mobility so I use forearm and wrist too much and mess up my elbow.

Great tip!!! Explains what Pete Sampras does I think… Was always trying to figure out his key. Can’t wait to try this in my match tomorrow. Thank you coach!

Your video covers something I don't recall seeing before. I'm going to work on making sure I'm doing this on my serve.

a really wise piece of injury prevention advice, in warning people not to try to use their current perceived level of power, when transferring to what will eventually be a better way. I also like your way of describing how much this effort should be, as though to a 10 yr old. I often say "to a 7 yr old so they don't feel that you are patronising them" in other words it still needs to look like a serve. Probably better to define from the start, to keep the shoulder and shoulder girdle movement small before an equally rapid acceleration as the hand will; but I know what you meant.

isolating any shoulder movement is something i didn't really focus on during my serve, but i can see how it will lead to better arm and wrist acceleration. thanks.

Can't wait for the next edition in this series. And I'm very curious as to your change in stance and on your thoughts about the stance in general. Your tips are always insightful and deep.

The motion and positions you describe should happen passively with a loose wrist and arm. The acceleration is produced by keeping the head up during the follow through. This allows the whipping motion of the arm to fire against a stalled torso. The momentum of the racket brings the shoulder down in the late follow through. If you overdo the shoulder internal rotation, shoulder impingement may result.

When you talk about the shoulder moving at the trophy position, do you physically move it or should it just happen from being really relaxed?

Hey Steven, Hi from Singapore. Great content. Feels very natural the way you explain it. Shall try and see how it works for me. I wish you can elaborate a little more on serve plus one. I feel I lack quickness after my serve. Part of wht you re talking about addresses that . Please add a bit more on that subject.

Big part is just using a lot of energy to get ready and split right away, but hopefully will touch more on it at some point.

Coach Steve! So good to see you again. Do these concepts apply to the slice serve too?

Yes, but contact point is a little different

Would be nice if you show some serves with common flaws that you mention at 2:46 and then show the correct motion side by side. I have the common flaw that you mention and am trying hard to break years of muscle memory doing that.
@15PointsOfTennis Жыл бұрын
Even flaws are interesting bc someone who practices a ton can “overcome” them, and get a good result. But often the upside potential is capped. Good point though.

Nice video. See you have just demonstrated why the serve is not a baseball throw. When throwing a baseball, your shoulder advances forward while you just showed that in serve, the shoulder remains stationary for the most part. I actually use this motion at times when I notice that my serve goes long. I think the rotation of the elbow seems to slow the ball down a little bit because the ball has more topspin. At least that's what it appears to be.

What racquet are you actually endorsing? thanks!

I don’t have a sponsor, I’ve reached out to some busy its been a hassle is the past. That said, I prefer the heavier racquets that are less common these days.

what is your height, you are getting so much power. I am 5.8ft but i struggle with my power and accuracy

I think it is because people are making the analogy with the forehand, where you have to keep your arm away from the body to get more leverage, so it a bit counterintuitive
