As a native french speaker this song is about the troubles causes by love, manifested by physical pain, and "she" is the only cure for this pain. Funny how ancient french sounds very much like the québec accent

It's precisely the same thing that occurred within the American south. The more isolated population preserved the older English Accent while the sound of the language changed in other places.

Well I don't think this person has the 15th century accent, and so I don't personally think it's the québec accent ! Or it can be more of the pronunciations that can remind us of the accent, but not the actual accent !☺️

In French? The English attempt at "R" is far more difficult. In French today they've moved it to the back of the mouth. Not hard at all to say. Portuguese makes it an "h", so pretty similar. Especially when you consider how often human languages pair H and Kh with R. The English pronunciation, conversely, almost never occurs anywhere else.

@nomimi8785

Yes it is! I don't know who wrote this song, but they used the image of a flea stuck in the ear to show the troubles caused by love. Afterwards, the lover tries to cure his ache and claims that only "her" can cure it. So love isn't expressed directly although it is quite obvious ^^

Thanks for making this video It'd be really interesting to watch a video where you explain the timeline of French and what the differences are in pronunciation at each stage of its development, from when the written forms were standardized to the modern language. It's clear from the French classes I took in high school that many of the silent letters are still pronounced at this stage, but it's hard to follow just by ear, so having it explained would be fascinating.

I have got a flea in my ear, alas! Which night and day wriggles me, and bites me And drives me crazy, No remedy can be given, I run over here, I run over there, Remove it, take it out of myself, I beg you, O real beauty, rescue me. When I think to leave my eyes asleep, It comes to bite me, to itch me, to sting me, And keeps me from sleeping. I was given help from an old enchantress Who cures everyone and cures everything, She didn’t know how to cure me Well I know that only one thing can cure this illness*, I would like you to see me favorably, and be willing to Appease your cruelty. *This verse is a bit more ambiguous in French, and I didn’t know how to translate it accurately. The noun which goes with the adjective « seule » (only one) is implicit. So it refers to either the woman or a « thing » (which is obviously an innuendo), or even both ;)! By the way, my translation is clearly imperfect, it’s just to give a rough idea of what it means! I would be glad to have your corrections

@justames5979

That's the point, this isn't modern French. In the 15th century "vieille" was pronounced with an /ʎ/ and not with a /j/ because this was before the the complete palatalisation of "ill". It's also why he pronounces "r" as /ɾ/ and not /ʁ/, the modern gutteral sound that only appeared in the 19th century
