I find it interesting how they manage the babie's poop. Its something thats easily forgotten, but if you think about it, evolution and instinct had to figure out baby waste management in animals that have nesrs or burroughs to raise their babies in. Its why cat and puppie babies need stimulation to poop. And here with birds, it seems, they poop in a specific way and their poop has a consistency that allows that parent to grab it and take it out of the nest. Disgusting? Maybe. Interesting? Definitely!

That nest box, it is really good that hole is only so big, if it was a simple nest of sticks and twigs, it would have been ruined. Good job on the house and the camera setup, it is really cool to see the parent birds come and go and all the little mouths waiting.

Maybe the next iteration of the bird house could have a toilet roll-like elongated entrance so that the family is really safe and no magpie beaks can ever protrude in

@6:43 • 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. The mother bird (or father bird) buried their head so deep into the nest when that big beak popped in. But the blind babies kept screaming for food... I was like, "dang, be quiet." 🤣🤣🤣 Glad they were safe thanks to this wooden structure they built their nest in.

Excuse the stupid question, but I've noticed that after feeding one of the babies, the baby will turn around and the parent will take something from them? I guess a good example of this would be 5:22? What are they taking, why, and what do they do with it?

Why does the father have ruffled head feathers?
@LiveTwinReaction3 жыл бұрын
He's molting, not too sure on the specifics but sometimes birds will molt during these warmer months and they can look kinda funny. Like blue jays for example will molt and lose the feathers on their head, and they'll look like vultures for a while until new ones grow in.
@motherlandbot68373 жыл бұрын
@@LiveTwinReaction Adult Blue Tits generally don't start their annual molt until July, after their brood has fledged. He seems to have soiled his head feathers with something sticky and persistent (pine sap or fruit preserves?)

@@LiveTwinReaction I'm not sure what causes that bare head syndrome in corvids, but as a lifelong bird enthusiast, longtime volunteer rehabber, and retired biologist from upstate NY, I never saw the bare head syndrome among Blue Jays (my favorites among our native NA birds) until this century. Local Blue Jay populations were hit hard at the end of the 1970s by Proventricus Worms, then by West Nile Virus (which completely wiped out American Crows here) in 1990. They haven't recovered to their 1960s levels, but at least the Blue Jays that lose their head plumage in drastic molts (?) have consistently recovered. The same bare head syndrome has been occurring among Western Jackdaws and Eurasian Magpies in the UK. These also seem to fully recover.

A deep nest box helps aswell as the hole size . I make my boxes with the base 200mm from the bottom of the 19mm hole. It stops squirrels reaching in too
