Hey thx for the vid! Btw do you think it’s possible to reuse both the tube and pump seals so long as you take them off carefully? Also if you just changed your oil filter only a few thousand miles is it ok to reuse it too?

Thanks, good video. According to the owner's manual, a small amount of weeping from the water pump is normal. In my years of auto and bike repair, I find that most pump seals will weep when they are cold and once warmed up it stops. Obviously, if it is flowing there is a failure.

Thanks for the video, it was a big help. I replaced my AT water pump today. 2016 with 1960 miles. (Bought new in 2018. I don't ride much, just nice Sundays around town). I did let the coolant "age" 5 years though. Won't do that again. Will change every 3 years for sure from now on. Ride safe.

I have a 2018, I would recommend you go with a propylene glycol over normal coolent. Engine Ice is usually what I run in my bikes and not only do they run cooler with it, it's much less corrosive and non toxic. It does have a much higher freeze point, in another words it freezes at a higher temperature than normal coolent. As long as your garage doesn't get below 10 degrees Fahrenheit you should be totally fine though. You would have to be careful with that if you live somewhere really cold though. I'm doubtful you'll see this comment, however could you do a fork seal video sometime? I really like your straight forward approach to doing things and you don't make your viewers listen to 15 minutes of crap before you even start the repairs.

That is so ridiculous that in 10K miles a water pump goes bad. A friend just received a recall for his AT because evidently the inside of the gas tank has a problem. The short summary is the welding on the tank was not done correctly. The zinc separated from the steel at the welds sending debris into the fuel system, clogging the fuel filter, and causing the bikes to stop running unexpectedly. Some owners are performing their own fix by buying a Guglatech filter instead of the cheesy factor one being used to correct the problem. I would still have the recall work done in case you develop injector problems down the road.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah these pumps seem to start trickling really prematurely. Ashamed to see that. And the fact that it's not the easiest pump to replace. Having one that both right on the side of the case is the best. Like my Yamaha Rhino 660. Interesting about the recall. I haven't heard of that yet. I wonder if the 2017 had it also
@capecrusader6932
@capecrusader6932 3 жыл бұрын
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow The recall is for the 2018 to 2020's. I remember Ford got sued for their Duratec engines that had the water pump inside the motor and you didn't know it failed until you did an oil change and saw that it was filled with coolant or the motor destroyed itself. I wish Honda would do the right thing and recall those water pumps and replace them with a better pump. I guess time will tell. I appreciate you taking the time to video the repair.

Yeah. Water pump inside of the engine is never a good thing. These have been out for a few years now and it doesn't look like anybody's had major problems with the water pump. It's just a trickle leak here and there. And no problem, glad you found the video useful

It seems you think everything is a terrible design. As the world's largest internal combusition engine manufacturer I'm pretty sure Honda engineers were strategic in their design. They've made a few motorcycles in their day. But then again you are a master mechanic and know everything.

But on a serious note, you may be right that I had a slight attitude in the video. And I apologize for that. Its probably because I was surprised/frustrated to see a water pump fail at such low mileage and then to look at my bike and see it seeping as well. If you think Honda did a good job by putting the water pump inside of the engine then I'm not even going to try to argue with you. These days they engineer to save money, not build things that are bulletproof. Honda made their name back in the day. Quality is far less across the board from what I've seen it was in the 80s and 90s. You'll never change my mind. And I work on all sorts Honda's everyday. Anyway that's all I got. Good luck to you

Just found your channel and this was a great video! - My 2018 Africa twin video had some coolant on my skid plate (probably the size of a quarter or two..) after an hour long interstate ride... Didn't think much of it. Just normal weeping? Bike temp gauge is still never jumping above three bars. Albeit the fans will kick on occasionally at a light. Haven't noticed this at all since putting a number of hard miles on the bike. I just recently got the bike back from a dealer while having a recall done and I asked + paid for them to "looked over" the bike and didn't mentioned anything about the coolant. Any measures I should take here?
@darinhuffman1127

Dont allow the bike to go for a prolonged time without a coolant fluid change. The thought is the degraded, corrosive coolant can make the seal more likely to fail and fail more quickly. No foolproof prevention methods though.
