That was a refreshingly "untechnical" review. Also, those were some amazing shots mate. Class A stuff. You've got another subrscriber :)

I’ve had this lens for a month now on my 5d mark iv. The plus is it’s very sharp, quality is amazing, focus of quick. Biggest downside besides the price is the vignette at 16mm. I find that under any condition of shooting I still have to remove it from each photo in post production which is a bit of a hassle. Adds 10 seconds or more to each photo edit you do, so if you’re editing a wedding for example that would be a bit nightmarish if you shot wide open. At or above 18mm that goes away.

GREAT video, interesting & informative. Thanks for sharing. (I own one of these and the glass is astonishing : used for pro-room interiors )

Great review m8!! I bought this lens in november and I find it great! I shoot a lot of architecture and interior design. I wasn`t all that happy with the mark II, so I bought the Zeiss distagon 15mm F2.8 Prime. When this baby got out I sold my precious Zeiss lens. Sure, there is still barrel distortion but I found that 22mm on this MK III is THE sweet spot. Well done Canon. Still waiting for adobe to release the lens profile for this lens.

Good to know Pascal, think I'll go and try that out. What aspects make 22 the sweet spot for you?

Great share! Might I ask if you know why Canon has opted not to include IS in this lens? The new 1Dx Mark II and the 5D Mark IV (my desired camera body) are also without IS. How will these camera/lens pairings perform without IS in the hands of a non pro such as myself? Should I be concerned or does the excellent AF negate the need for IS? Many Thanks!

The cathedral was shot at ISO 250, 1/100 sec, f3.2 yet appears to be taken in broad daylight. That suggests an EV of around 7 or 8 which one would possibly find in a brightly lit city scene at night. Are you sure the numbers are right?

And thanks for the review. I'm looking to replace my medium format gear and considering the 5DS and never previously used zooms before but I might have to reconsider based upon your excellent report.

Hi Graham, the numbers are correct yes. To the best of my recollection it was towards early evening on a walk to the Opera house area for a meal.

Pleasure. I am enjoying the 5Ds, resolution and detail is great but you might want to consider the 5DsR if you are NOT shooting fashion / fabrics that present a problem with moire. The R is slightly sharper. I never shoot zooms either but I would have to consider one after this experience - I was going to go for the 35mm f1.4 prime but I am now in a tousle between the two. Both great pieces of glass.

Aye, the 35mm f1.4 L was one of the lenses I was looking at as a prime but this short zoom has me thinking twice now ...

Hi Clinton, could I make a request? Could you do a behind the scenes series of your Australia shoot with Liz? The stuff we don’t know, hiring the camper, Liz and you, scouting locations, food, camping, your road trip, inspirations, etc. From what I understand, it was you & Liz, the camper. Would love to hear Liz’s views too. Not just the good bits, but also the pain in arse things can be. I ask as, even if as a hobby, I’d like to do something similar, drive & take photographs with a fashion edge. Skinned as shit, but I have a camera & a passion. Much appreciated, and thank you for your vlogs. P.s: Liz is a jaw dropper!

Just one big confusion ....everybody is complaining about the vignette that you see on the corners.....which I don't see in your work.....what is the truth about it or you have removed it in post ....is it the same for video also ?
@dphog
@dphog 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sooraj, I did not go to any extra effort to remove vignetting, as far as I can remember there is minimal processing. At the time of release I am not sure whether Capture 1 already had lens optimisation data updated and automatically corrected but by now there should definately be compensation applied automatically to your results. I would expect to see a little vignetting in a 16-35mm lens, which there is, but nothing extreme enough to start a conversation about and scare me away from the lens.

On a previous video you said a 35 is a great story lens, would this be a good "35mm" to buy or is the prime a better version ?
@dphog
@dphog 8 жыл бұрын
Depends on your needs Brooily. The prime is awesome, super fast and shallow. Primes come with disciple and structure attached and give you a recognisable signature. The 16-35 allows you to do more though and is a better wide all rounder - love some of my shots at 16mm. The 16-35 does perform great at 35mm so if you don't need the exta speed of a 1.4 over a 2.8 then I am inclined to say go for the zoom. Can't believe I just said that!

dphog awesome , your review of the 5ds made me finally make the decision to buy it and your shots with the 35mm did give me that sense of a greater story can't wait to buy a 35mm. Thank you son much and keep up he good work !!!
