I LOVE your presentation Rich! So many times when I'm surfing KZbin for lessons the folks that post them have shortcomings i.e. rambling on and on, bad microphone placement etc. You get right to the point and I can appreciate that. Thanks so Much!!

Rich, I got your jazz licks 1-21, they are awesome and I am working on tricks to incorporate them into my playing, and i just got the 2-5-1 licks. I would love to see more of the jazz licks continuation, but I thank you for this great service. My playing is already seeing the fruits of your valuable lessons. Keep it up!!!

Just what I was looking for. This is working for me over an E minor to A 7 change starting the lick from the 10th fret on the b string. not sure why. wish I knew a little more about the note relationships and why I can go from this feel back into a pentatonic and have it sound so good. Thank you kind sir. great lesson. Already hunting down more of your vids.

For all the people who asked questions in the comments about this lick, its pretty simple. The lick is based around a ii - V - I progression in C major. The first eight notes are based around D minor, with the C# being a leading tone into the D, and and the Eb leading in to the next chord (G13). The next eight notes are based around G13 with a a couple non-chord tones here and there. The last note is an E, which is the third of a Cmaj chord. This whole lick is a C major scale with, and the chromatic notes are there simply to make the melody more smooth.

flyjoseph explained this lick pretty good. Another way to look at it is when you see Dminor play off the V of Dmin or A7 then to Dminor. There is also some A blues scale in the lick then an altered G7 finally resolving to C

A very basic progression in Jazz. Thinking on a major scale you would play the second, fifth and first degree chords like this: IIm7- V7-Imaj7. For example on C major it would be Dm7- G7-Cmaj7.

2-5-1s are the chords built off the root, second and fifth degrees of a scale. They are commonly used in jazz.. I have some 2-5-1 lessons on it on my 99centGuitarLessons website.

Licks are great for learning how to play jazz guitar but they helped very little with improvisation. My question was where do licks come from and how do your make them up on the spot? Learning Bebop was the answer with things like enclosures, deflections, pivoting off the 3rd and 7th and chromatic approaches. Also learning how to apply the bebop scale and the use of hexatonics (6 note scales). And of course practicing the licks (although I didn't) and other things in all 6 positions and in all keys (playing up a 4th) with a metronome.

Sorry Mister Severson - about my answer to the video Licks 1 ...."Where is the f in your line?" You play it really, but you dont speak about the note F in your line. This is my misunderstanding. Your videos are amazing. I found it just 10 days bevor in You tube. I can learn a lod from your great Guitar Playing. It would be nice, if you can cancel my first answer- Thank you very much, sorry...Dolf Schaller
