Love visiting New York, went to Academy on 18th when I was there back in June. Best place to find used jazz here has been Ella Guru for me.

Fantastic video. I should add also that 12th street Academy is infinitely better than 18th street. If you're in Williamsburg-ish/Greenpoint-ish area again, hit up Academy Annex next time -- they have some rogue deals in new arrivals sometimes that are soooo worth the trip. Record Shop in Red Hook too! They're a real Brooklyn relic and they have amazing improv shows there, usually on weekends. Human Head wall is so amazing to look at, but yes, so on point, way prohibitively priced. I'm sure that's the way the wall stays up and entices people to spend more in general in that store.

Great video! You should do more like this. If I had the opportunity. I would have duplicated your entire experience in New York, especially your trip to JRC. You seem to have checked all my boxes: jazz record shops, jazz clubs, great restaurants, beer and coffee shops. It doesn’t get any better than that!!! I come from Alberta in western Canada and I just don’t see as many jazz titles except for new releases in record stores so you had me drooling over most of the things you found. Love Sonny Criss And the Three Sounds. Even though they released a lot of records in the day. I rarely run across their titles in stores or in the wild. That Hank Mobley was a great score as well! Love your channel!❤

Thank you! That's how I typically try to spend my time on vacation, rather than visiting top tourist spots or following a prescribed itinerary. I like to walk around and explore and let the day unfold on its own. I know I've had a successful vacation if my feet are sore by the end of it.

Thanks and good eye. I actually picked them all up from a collector who had passed away. He had subscriptions to Down Beat, Jazz Journal, Coda and then some smaller other publications that he paid to have bound into volumes. All were listed on eBay and despite my best efforts to try and get some sort of bulk buy, I ended up buying them all individually. This was back in 2019 or so, but they are amazing resources. I’m still reading them actually, and doing so sequentially cover to cover, a little bit each day.

Hey man I’m new to your channel but I love the content. You like older jazz than I do (I’m more late 60s to early 80s and like a lot of fusion) I’m in the UK so find it very hard to find nice clean jazz records even common stuff on CTI etc. super nice finds though and love the passion and knowledge.

Thanks! I've been dipping my toe into late 70s and 80s, but still just a toe. I still haven't found my sweet spot with fusion and I also tend to stay away from some of the later period free jazz titles, but I'm always open

I'm always hesitant when I see that someone has documented a trip to my home town to go record shopping, but you hit many of the gems. Next time you go to the East Village be sure to include Ergot Records on 2nd St. It's only been open a year or so, but it has become a favorite of many since it's so well curated. It's small but they have a good jazz section. Great video though, you got some titles i need to check out. Thanks.

Curious to hear you response to the Pucho .. Safron and Soul. While in Athens Greece last month, I purchased a 2019 sealed release of Pucho’s Jungle Fire this is released by UK BGP and pressed in France. This is a tremendous album and an excellent pressing. It’s been on heavy rotation. BTW I have a 3,000 album collection up here in Northern California…

A1 is a diggers paradise if you have like 2-3 hours. Its cluttery. I actually found some decent records at Generation Records (Punk Rock joint in the Village). Some imports if youre into that.

I live in manhattan, LMK next time your coming and i will be happy to give you some tips of where to go. The e12th street Academy is better than 18th st (IMO)... I found a OG Helen Merrill self-titled there (and price was reasonable and had to grab it)

Hello , i am looking for a track/ album for several years now, maybe you have any idea, thank you for any help in advance. THis is the info i can provide: i heard the track before 2018. Style is contemporary (i would say say, the record is from at least the 90s, maybe even from 2000-2017). Now the track starts with a single note on an electric piano. the key is stroke a few times, each time a little hard. Then the piano plays an intro. After the, a larger (4?5?6? players) horn section comes in playing tutti. it's not a slow track, it's quite forward, but as said, rather modern. it's not acid jazz, not funk or similar, rather like modern UK style or french or german like Nils Wogram, but it also could be an anthem international record ( though it does not sound like "tribal style conscious jazz). Do you maybe have any idea? i guess there are not too many tracks, that start with that repeated not on one key on an electric piano. thank you so much!

How were prices in NY?

Prices were about what I'd expect to see in Atlanta, so not really any different. Maybe the big difference is in Atlanta you only ever see a $500 title once in a blue moon - I think stores would just prefer to sell those extra expensive ones online - and in New York they have them on the wall or behind glass.

Out of curiosity, did you see a lot of rare BN titles at JVC?

Nope, in fact I didn't see any. They had some jimmy smith titles but that was about it.

@@jazzvinylcollector they always have jimmy smith. I think those have been sitting there for months. Ken told me the moment they get good stuff in they sell out that day. That’s not to say there isn’t good stuff to be had in the bins.
