16 Levels Vs Velocity Pads - Which is best? MPC Live 2 Tutorial

In this video I talk through a few reasons why I use 16 levels for pretty much everything I want to do with velocity on the MPC LIve 2.

Getting a natural velocity trigger has a lot to do with adjusting the pad sensitivity to your exact play style. I do agree 16 levels is great, but there's a risk of getting a pretty robotic velocity. In reality no drummer hits their drumkit exactly the same velocity every time. Even within 16 levels. By default, my MPC One really wasn't set up right in terms of velocity sensitivity (neither was after touch). By the way, doing triplets on a single pad with a variation in velocity can pretty much only be done using velocity sensitivity. I'd say most drum performances with distinct accents really need that live play feel. I'd recommend not so much practicing finger drumming, but more so diving into the settings and find the right velocity sensitivity settings (threshold, sensitivity etc.).

Or you can just record your samples a little louder so you won’t have to fuck with the sensitivity

You gotta have the pads set to poly in order to get velocity sensitivity to work properly. That lack of response is because they’re automatically listed at mono at the global setting.

When I drum in my beat most of the time i have the grid screen up. It usually shows that I hit the pad a little different every once in a while naturally instead of trying to make it sound different on purpose. But I also like to do it with 16 levels sometimes too.
