If you delete the afm, swap torque converters, and install an updated thermal bypass it should be good :) otherwise, yes be careful

please advise what the thermal bypass is all about. took AFM out of ECM, run amsoil 5-30, Amsoil trans fluid at 50K, have 90K in miles. Have 8.5 MM MSD copper spark plug wires, K&N air filter. otherwise stock. What happens to torque converter ? take it out only ? please advise. gotta make this truck last. Plain jane 2024 Silverado with 4 cylinder/turbo is 54K ! Last silverado lasted 405K including the trans. (lots of Amsoil oil/trans fluid changes) Present guy has 678,000 miles on it in Texas.

Bought my 14 Silverado new 8 years ago. It hauls 5k lbs every day. 230k as of now. Here’s what I’ve replaced: Transmission at 138k. Condenser at 80k. Compressor at 150k. AC hoses at 15k under warranty. Radiator at 220k. Vacuum pump at 200k. Starter at 200k. Suspension upgrade at 200k(not needed…but now it’s a bit taller) Upper and lower radiator hoses. Thermostat. Plugs and wires every 100k. Tires every 50k. Oil every 5k. Rear diff grease every 50k. Air filter every 25k. Trans filter and fluid every 30k. Added a catch can at 150k. Did a throttle body/intake sea foam cleaning at 150k. And now I run a range dod delete unit to stay in v8 mode…..to save my lifters. At times I’ve been mad at her, but overall I love her and appreciate her. The 5.3 is a fantastic engine. The fuel pump hasn’t failed yet. My last Silverado was a 98, and I replaced that fuel pump probably 4x between 80k and 275k miles. That was her Achilles heel. But the 5.3 vortec and 5.3 ecotec(afm deleted) are magnificent workhorses. I don’t love the 6L80 tranny. It runs too hot. It’s shift points in trailer mode especially when tranny is not yet up to temp is too hard. And despite my religious maintenance and careful throttling, the tranny doesn’t hold up. But I’d buy it again. Love my truck. And I named her AC Pro after fixing the AC system multiple times. Lol. Keep on truckin

I always thought the shifting sucked on my 6L60 transmission. I changed the fluid to Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP even though it wasn't recommended for the 6L60 and things improved. The Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP is recommended your the 6L80. Have you tried it.
@ColonelEMHouse
@ColonelEMHouse 2 жыл бұрын
@@regould221 I haven’t, but I will. Thanks fir the recommendation. I’m running amsoil atf right now. The transmissions on these trucks in my opinion are under built and troublesome to service. When I buy another transmission or new truck, I’m gonna tap in a drain plug. More frequent drain and fill could help these a lot. The bolts coming on and off for drain and fill tranny fluid has resulted in one transmission pan bolt female thread breaking down. And I don’t crank in her. I don’t even torque it as high as spec cuz they are small with fine threads. And the exhaust has to be manipulated to get the pan off. If there was a tranny oil plug, it wouldn’t be a big deal.

Great job again! I got my truck used with 83k in 2019, 2015 Crew Cab z71 6.5' bed. I had the brake pump failure and error message when I was driving home from the non-gm dealership where I bought my truck. It felt like no power brakes and for a big guy trying to stop a big truck with manual brakes, it took all of my 250lbs on the pedal. Quick internet search while sitting in a parking lot led me to the TSB and recall for this exact issue. Took it to the GM dealership the next day and they got me right in and immediately replaced the brake pump. While they were at it they reflashed the electric power steering programming, too, for a recall I wasn't even aware of. All of the work was done under recall and cost me $0. I wasn't aware of the airbag issue, so I'll have to look into that one. Thanks again!

I got my 2014 Silverado used at 92k miles, I’m up to almost 115k now in the few months I’ve owned it. It is my daily and I’ve done the basic bolt ons (Intake and exhaust + Diablo tube and afm delete + catch can). Haven’t had any serious issues with it yet, but on occasion my rear diff will make a clunking noise as if the spider gears are grinding. Not a common issue but it does happen. I would attribute it to my winter driving habits, like seeing an unplowed empty parking lot and ripping some donuts or figure-8’s. Also the stock horn is an embarrassment to the truck, sounds like a clown horn! Per usual thanks for the great informative video, hopefully you don’t have to add more broken parts to this list!

I own. 2014 - 5.3l, a few recalls nothing too bad. I have replaced the fuel pump after 4 years of driving in North Western Ontario winter weather. Installed a new one. With a big blob of grease on top of sending unit and fittings. Replaced both valve cover gaskets. Passenger side air actuator was a few teeth out.rear passenger door wire was broken (window did not go up or down). Leak around the satellite antenna. And purchased Range Technology DOD. 2017. I have 190200 kms So far so good.

Great video - thanks for sharing fails owners have dealt with. I'd heard about the fuel pump, starter, and lifter issues - everything else was new to me. The only issue I've had from this list was the overhead storage coming loose - happened to me last year on the off-road beach in Outer Banks, NC. Lucky screws were loose and easy to find, tricky enough finding where to re-install, but was able to fix relatively quickly. A bit of blue loctite never hurt anything Bought 2018 LT Z71 DC brand-new, 4/20/18 - hits 4 years in a few days - low mileage (32K), 5.3L, daily, few road trips (500-1400mi), leveled w/ 33" Nitto RG, Fuel 17" Rebel +12 offset, Eibach Pro-Truck Level/Lift (~3"), MotoFab UCA, Zone Add-a-Leaf, Borla S-Type, S&B Intake, JLT Separator, Bullydog tune (+AFM Delete, speedometer adjustment), Anzo Plank Headlights, Spyder LED Taillights, BedRug full liner, Bedslide black-edition, American Tonneau roll-up, Dee-Zee side rails, Weathertech floor liners/underseat storage, fluid undercoat for winters + Blizzak on OEM 18" alloys). Couldn't be happier with the setup - it's complete multi-purpose, designed to last. Not a single thing has broken, nothing replaced aside normal wear items (oil/air filter/wipers/fluids), original battery/brakes, 2 recalls (no issue w/ my truck) taken care of by dealer. I'd happily buy this truck again. I I have any of these fails moving forward, not too concerned as none of them seem too difficult or expensive to take care of but good to have an idea of what will fail.

Transmission went out at 95K miles, but my extended warranty paid for it! One quick thing for the BT music pausing; Assuming it is the same issue mine has, it is much faster to click radio really quickly, and then back to media. It works for me 100% of the time. Thanks for the video! I bought my 2014 silverado 1500 in June 2021. Haven't experienced some of these problems. But I did recently have to have my engine rebuilt. Excellent videos that I finally had the time to watch. I bought my 2014 Silverado LTZ extended cab Z71 back in the fall of 2013 RIGHT before GM got greedy and raised the MSRP up over $2000, thus mine is one of the early builds. Currently sitting at just over 40k miles I've had very few problems with it. First thing I did was take it to my nearest RustChek dealer to have it annually (semi-annually in my case due to low mileage use) undercoated using the fluidic messy stuff, so that my truck & frame don't rust out which is very common on our trucks. Heck, there was already surface rust on the frame when I took delivery of it right off the dealer lot! Anyways, as soon as I got my first application of RustChek, my rear end started to "clunk". Was told that would happen as the petroleum based product likely got into my bushings and loosened things up under there. No big deal but somewhat annoying when turning tight or driving slowly over uneven terrain. Transmission is great so far BUT will likely have the torque converter changed out in the upcoming years before it destroys the transmission. Got rid of the factory 18" alloys and Goodyear rubber (bad dryrot already on them after just 8 years) and got me a set of 20" chrome off of a '16 Silverado. Spotless as far as corrosion goes, whereas the 18's were already pitted and corroding everywhere due to the salt/brine in our area. The only other issue which just happened this past winter, is that the drivers side seat NO LONGER heats up. The lumbar still does BUT not the seat. Not sure if anyone else experienced this problem. Will keep this truck for another 20 years or so or until I'm 6ft under! Just retired so who know which one will come first.
@TheSundaeDrive
@TheSundaeDrive Жыл бұрын
glad to hear you have only had very minor issues with it! I haven't had any heated seats issues but probably a wiring or button failure. My truck has also been really good so far to me. I plan to keep it a long time God willing!

You have no issues because you only have 40k miles. I would highly recommend putting the 158 deg tranny thermostat on it vs the stock 194 deg, adding a catch can, and turning off AFM with a range module or something similar. That tranny will cost you at least 5k when it goes…. So take care of it. Do not skimp on oil changes either .

I should probably add that this was not my first attempt to get the "Recall" accomplished. I called twice before, once right after I got the letter from Chevy, and then again a few months later. I even asked when I made the appointment to get the truck serviced if the "Recall" could be accomplished at the same time and was told yes. Not the first time I have had the "Recall" run around......Also other Dealers(who I won't use)also said the do not have the necessary parts at this time.

Recently hit 120,000 on my 2015 and I have had my first problems other than rusty frame from day one that was covered under warranty but not really fixed. Had a difficult time starting after fueling, was the fuel vapor purge valve. Starting to have a low hot idle and shutter. Twice have had code P06DD Oil pressure solenoid valve stuck closed. I changed the oil pressure sensor and am going to raise the idle with a chip re-programmer. A few times I’ve lost brake boost at about 5mph and had to stand on the petal to stop. Thanks for the video, I like the truck and would like to keep it.

I had a 2016 5.3 Silverado. I had torque converter replaced @ 40K on the 6 speed. I also had the new low temp trans thermostat installed . I had installed a catch can when new. I used the severe service guide and changed all the fluids as recommended. I also had the radio go to full blast until cooled when the sun was really beating in on the truck. Traded the truck in at 50K . General Motors customer since 1996, I liked all of my purchases, except for the Silverado. I the front brakes kept sticking and burning out the pads, I guess you have to get them serviced yearly or this is an issue. Sorry, GM lost me, and it sounds like I was fortunate from what you’ve been describing. Great truck to keep content on your channel 😢

The rear end clunk noise is common on these 14-18.5 year model trucks. The two most common fixes is to re-torque your rear Axle u-bolts and replace the leaf spring pad inserts. The leaf spring pad inserts that worked for me was to replace the four plastic outer inserts with the rubber ones that come on the lower leaf spring. This eliminates the friction/noise heard...pair this with a u-bolt re-torque and it should fix the clunk issue. But if you stand on the side of the truck and grab the bedside then shake the truck side to side and hear a clunk, thats a normal characteristic to floating Axle trucks. If the noise/play of the axles is too loose or too drastic then id be concerned there is a rear end issue.

I have a 17 Silverado LT in Western NY as well. I have just started experiencing the problems described in the Sundae Drive site. As far as the brakes go, I started installing ECB Brakes in my vehicles and found that it was money well spent. The pads and rotors are far superior to any that are available including GM replacements. A slight premium in cost but worth every penny.

I bought my 2015 about 7 months ago with about 60,000 miles on it. Very clean truck and so far has been running great (but now you're videos have make me paranoid 🤣🤣). The main and most annoying problem has been electrical based. The first time, I got warnings for Stabilitrak, trailer brake and all kinds of things. The main screens went out, the radio would come on at full blast and couldn't be shut off, and then it did stall a couple of times. It showed 17 codes. After a process of elimination, we replaced the battery (which tested out fine, but decided to try it). A couple of weeks after, the trailer brake system light coming on (like 16 times in a row). No codes that time, but lower than normal voltage. So then we rebuilt the alternator and the positive battery cable. Currently driving it and now the radio is flipping screens both on the main screen and the dash info screen. I've had it at my regular shop, but taking it to the dealership to get the airbag recall done, so I'm going to trip down that rabbit hole with them. But does anyone have any guidance? I love this truck in a lot of ways... But I upgraded from a Gen 10 F-150 because I was hoping to minimize some of the maintenance bills ... But dear lord this is stupid.

2014 bought in 2016 with 30k miles. Here is all that has failed . All head and tail light bulbs replaced 3 full times around the truck. Fuel pump module at 60k. 2 cats and 02 sensors at 90k. A/c condenser at 90k. Radiator at 90k. Fuel pump at 95k. Battery at 100k. I have another bad cat, but I haven’t replaced it, keeps check eng light on. Started at 110k. Transmission at 125k. Wheel bearings at 130k. Upper and lower control arms, inner and outer tie rods at 130k. Transmission cooler lines at 135k. Rear drive shaft u-joints at 135k..”solved clunk issue”…. Even though I couldn’t personally feel any slack in them when turning by hand , the clunk stopped. Definitely forgetting a few…. But currently at 146k at 7 years of ownership and probably close to 10k in repairs. I did some of this work myself , so I didn’t actually spend all of this , but still …. Thousands of dollars. I’ve owned every 1/2 body style since 1995 until now except for the current one and I have never owned a vehicle with this many issues this early, and I maintenance my stuff very well. A big L for GM…… probably the most disgusting one to me is releasing an updated tranny thermostat 7 years after burning up no telling how many transmissions.

Clunking come from my rear end on my 2014 4.3L was the rear diff gears breaking off at 136,000 miles last july. Mechanic was amazed I was able to drive it to him to fix it. at this same time he recharged the a/c and found the no a/c issues is probably the condenser. At 98,000 found all oil/trans cooler lines leaking. Other issue I have noticed is it burns all the lights out alot more then any other vehicle I have had. Have replaced all lights 5-6 times . My 2000 jeep wrangler with 190,000 miles that I bought in 2012 I have replaced all lights just 1 time in 2014. Also there is most likely a special coverage warranty for your rear clunk noise , the dealer will inspect the leaf sprint brackets and grease them then road test it, if the noise persists they will replace the brackets or whole unit. Same goes for the vacuum pump even after the recall has been performed it’s just a reprogramming event and the vacuum pump will still fail at one point so they can replace that as well under a special coverage warranty.

My 2015 had several problems I did not see in this video. My rear shocks both failed at 16k miles, and again at 38k miles. I replaced them with aftermarket shocks at that point. My truck came with the factory Rancho Shocks. At 12k miles my steering column developed play that allowed the wheel to move laterally in any direction about 1 mm. This happened again around 30k. At 35k miles the drivers side power seat track had enough play in it that the seat would move about 5mm front to back, and tilt slightly causing the back of the seat to have about 20mm of play in it at the head rest. The entire seat track was replaced. At 14k my passengers side tow mirror would walk out on its own on rough roads or when the door was closed even when it was closed softly. at 35k this happened again, dealer replaced the mirror both times. At 56k it was doing it again now out of warranty and I delt with it until I traded the truck at 64k. At 64k I traded the truck in as the trans was failing. (6L90e) This trans always ran 190 degrees or more even in normal driving and would git 240 when towing rather often. My ignition switch came out of the column and fell apart 3 times in total. And no I never had anything more than the factory key fob on my keys. So it was not from excessive weigh hanging on the ignition switch. At 21k miles the radio locked up and would only display the color green. Dealer replaced the radio module under warranty. At 52k the AC compressor failed. I really liked that truck, but it had far to many problems. I did replaced it with another chevy. A 2020 that also had a few problems but nothing like that one did. The 2020 also had the 6L90 in it and it blew up at 12k and again at 16k. That truck was traded in for a 2022 3500 Diesel that I am now at 10k miles and 0 problems! Best truck I have ever owned!

@@TheSundaeDrive All of these where HD trucks. I had an 8k bumper pull camper that we took out 5-6 times a year but never more than about a 500 mile trip each way. We upgraded to a 12k 5th wheel and that was just too much for the 2020 2500 gas HD we had. So, 1 trip with it and I knew I needed a diesel. But it was a longer trip. About 550 miles each way and threw the TN mountains. I also pull a 7k car trailer about 10 times a year normally less then 400 miles round trip. So until I got the 12k 5er a gas HD was perfect for me needs. The 2020s second trans that blew up at 16k with just 4k miles on it never towed anything. Both transmissions in the 2020 were taken out by a failed torque converter. Truck was stock, 3.73 gears, stock wheels and tires, no lift, and not tuned or messed with in any way. The 2015 was tuned, after market 20s with tires that where about a half inch larger than stock. 4.10 gears. No lift. There are videos of some of the problems I had with the 2015 on my channel. 17 tahoe ssv 98k, the steering shaft as it goes through the firewall can make some noise/vibration if whatever it rides up against gets real dry and worn. Some silicone lube (the same stuff for brake slide pins) fixes that up for a good while. When it's just the right amount of cold outside the first push of the brake pedal makes an almost whistle sound thats hard to put into text. It's fine for the rest of the day almost every time so I'm assuming something to do with the brake booster. And another cold problem is the bendix gear of the starter likes to stick if it's too cold and grind the flywheel. Those are the few things that came to mind that I didn't see in the video.

The radiators on these trucks are undersized in general. I know GM made the TSB about the radiators for the 14s and 15s, but my 2018 had a radiator leak at 35k miles and it wasn't even covered under the powertrain warranty because it only extends to the water pump and thermostat. Most people on forums that had these issues (recurring) on their 14s and 15s got aftermarket radiators that weren't flimsy and never had the issue again.

Just bought my first pickup truck a 2015 Silverado and didn’t do much research before hand I should have so I’m a big dummy for that but I’ve always wanted a Silverado. Anyways dealer screwed me over needed a new engine right from the get go, luckily they gave me 3k back I was able to find an engine with 69k miles for 4k and had it installed for 1k. Runs great, I fixed the dash rattle, repainted truck bedliner, I’m attacking the minimal rust today on body today, and going to add some crc to undercarriage, removed the heat shield causing the rattle, just gonna take it back to a mechanic to take a look at the rear end clunk but I think it’s going to be something like torquing down some bolts like the comments have been saying, overall I’ve spent about 15k including the purchase of truck itself but hoping with this changes it will last a few years

Re the bluetooth issue as well as other infotainment issues. When i had my 2014 i had a lot of issues with the system freezing, the screen would go white and sit there for 10 min while it reset. It also had the bluetooth issues you mention and lots of other bugs. No software updates ever fixed it and i had it checked/updated EVERY time my breakerado was at the dealer for a warranty repair which was way too frequent. The research i had done at the time these problems with the radio plagued the 2014 and 2015 trucks and they fixed it in 2016 with a new infotainment unit. Until i decided it was time to dump the truck i had toyed with buying the new unit since there are companies that sell and program them to fit in the 2014 and 15 trucks and at the time folks on GM-trucks and forums like that reported the new unit fixed 99% of the issues. Too bad GM didnt retrofit the trucks they put the crappy system in. If i didn't have the Bose system i also could have gone with the Alpine "restyle" system but unfortunately it would not have fit my truck.

Most often the clunking in the rear is your leaf spring pads wearing out. Every time your springs articulate, in slow maneuvering you’ll hear a clunk. Super annoying. The Silverado pads are ridiculously thin. You can easily fix this with a few 1/4” pieces of rubber or you can purchase a kit such as Spring Thing. I bought the kit and it’s worked flawlessly for over a year. Real easy once you know where to look

I have the rear clunking sound as well. The sound usually happens when I am turning up an incline or hit a bump which rocks the truck back and forth. I replaced the rear shackles with 60k on 17’, rear shocks, and the truck is still making the clucking sound. The dealership put silicon pads on the leaf springs after replacing rear shackles, still the annoying clunk is present. Interestingly, I had the trucked rust proofed and the clunking sound has went away (for now). I have taken it to several mom and pop shops and they can’t figure this out. Rear bearings are still good as well. If you rock your bed back and forth does the clunking sound happen? I have rocked several truck beds with in the same body style model years and mine has been the only one to make this annoying sound. Looking forward to a video on this.

My 17 transmission overheated and started slipping at 80k mi. Also, had the AC condenser crap out. The brakes crapped out and like clockwork right when they released the recall for the "hydraulic pump". Months later was driving and tried to stop but truck said "hell nah bro! Let see how many people or cars we can take out" luckily I stood on the pedal and did some sidewalk/road driving to keep from killing anyone. Couldn't replicate it when I took it in. Then one night I'm backing up to my garage and again, pedal hit the floor, I tried with all my fatass to push the pedal down like it's going to help and barely smacked my garage with trailer hitch and it shot up like a rocket! Destroyed the garage door, part of the frame, did some beautiful damage to the top of my tailgate. Worse part is that it Destroyed all kinda stuff that was packed full in my garage. So sad and pissed. I used to love Chevy, have had 4 Chevys to date.... should have known better after getting a POS 2014 that shook like a dopefiend withdrawing!! But there was nothing wrong with it. Have had similar issues with shaking in the 17 but only at certain speeds like 70mph. Went from 20" factory to 28" Dubs, back to factory, then to 26" Diablo Elite G2s, back to factory. Every single one hit that Harlem shake on hwy. Guess 4 different sets of wheels and tires were all defective... nope, not the truck. So fk GM every time their hearts beat! That's how I feel. Sorry for rant and language.
