Patels are divided into two main sections leva Patel and kadva Patel. We have this surname as well as a surname(atak) going on for years in our family like kakadiya, kikani, vasani, etc these are called ataks! Some keep their surname as Patel, but every Patel has a atak running in their family. So we ain't brothers and sisters,😂 we don't marry same atak wala patel.

Why don't you visit India to know more about your roots? Reading books or watching videos will give you only limited exposure to actual picture and on top of that you won't be able to experience how your forefathers actually lived in their Gaam, because not a lot has changed when you go to North Gujarat, in fact it has only got worst. BTW I am not Patel nor an NRI but I love how Indians or next generation of Indian origins are interested in knowing more about their roots. And also thanks to all you guys for keeping our language "Gujarati" alive on foreign soil, though it's not about being biased to any other language or how it's beautiful than other languages... its more about emotional attachment as it's my mother tongue and so does for many of you.

As a westerner married to a Cha Gam Patel (Home Gam - Bhadran) for 35 years and having an Amin for a mother-in-law (Home Gam - Vaso) this was so relatable and hilarious. I have watched in stunned amazement at the corner shop conversations and the figuring out of connections in wedding invitations.

That’s the reason why Kathiyawadi Patel (leuva or kadva) uses family name instead of Patel as last name. My name has my family name while my brother’s official name has Patel. Example, Savani, Kanani, Savaliya, Dhola, Vaghani, Mavani, kakadiya, (almost all ends with ‘ani’ & ‘iya’). Same family lastname don’t marry to each other even they are not from same village. If some family name split up from x to y, then also x & y, don’t marry as it’s same family. Like my family name was split to another about 200 years back. So we don’t marry inbetween both.
