With you. For those of us who grew up in the 90s, we only knew him as a King. Yeah, he had the stint with the Rangers at the end, but you almost completely forget about the Blues. When he was traded by Edmonton, I was a baby. Totally agree with how shocking it was, it just happened a decade too early for me.

@@GrinderCB Thanks, that was a good documentary. Somehow I had not seen it before. It does indeed very briefly mention that the opposition somehow tried to block the trade. It gives zero details. Searching online, it seems that it was merely debated on the floor by a member of parliament that was part of the opposition. I do not believe there could be any legal grounds for somehow stopping the trade. Most likely this is completely blown out of proportion and is more myth than reality.

I sat in a bar one day for lunch, the bartender was a trainer for the Rangers, doing part time at the Bar during the days. Rangers practiced nearby in Westchester County (Rye or Mamaroneck), and while I sat eating my burger Guy walks in, sits right next to me, and starts talking to the Trainer. I froze. No one else was there. His French Canadian accent was all I needed. His hands were huge, he chain smoked Gitanes which is incredible for any smoker. I got his auto. Now I grew up in Toronto, early 70's. Hit the original Gardens as a kid. But I was closet-Habs fan and his impact on 8 yr olds on a pond cant be matched.

I know Kane was one of the best for Chicago, but as a long term Wings fan it was an easy adjustment to him wearing the wheel. However, I think that was helped by the fact that Detroit is now in the East and we didn't have to play them as often. A different selection of trade (I think it was a trade) from Chicago to Detroit that took a really, really long time to adjust to, was Chelios. I am kind of amazed you didn't list that one, Shannon,... Chicago was obviously done with Chris, but I don't think anyone thought one of their biggest rivals would benefit and win a cup with the help of Mr. Chelios.

Wayne Gretzky wearing an LA Kings jersey doesn't feel weird for me. Maybe because most of my cards in the 90s features him wearing that jersey, and he spent so many years there that it became an "accepted fact" (a bit like for Patrick Roy in Colorado). But Brett Hull wearing something other than the Blues jersey, that felt weirder for me at the turn of the 90s.

I like the Dennis Maruk jersey. As a 12 year old Caps fan, I was heartbroken when he was traded back to Minnesota. His offense would tank with the North Stars, so I guess David Poile knew what he was doing. The season after he was traded, I went with my dad to a used appliance store in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. They had this huge gas range with 8 burners and 2 ovens for sale. The salesman said it came out of Dennis Maruk's house. No, my dad didn't buy it. He was there for a washer and dryer.

I'm so surprized you didn't have Linden on your list It felt SO SUPER AWKWARD watching the guy who at the time was my favourite captain of all time traded to the Islanders

Hasn't happened yet, but Stamkos in anything other than a Tampa jersey will be something. Not a "fan" (Enjoy hockey in general though) of the Lightning, but always enjoy when players stick it out with a team (I know he wasn't the one that wanted to move on). As an Avs fan though, watching Forsberg in Philly and then Nashville always threw me off

Gretzky was a shocker, no doubt. But another big one for me was when Gordie Howe came out of retairement at 45 to play with his sons in the WHA. Then reappearing in the NHL with the Whalers in 1980.

I still remember the Modano trade vividly, Stars fans were NOT happy about it and it was a big story at the time in the DFW metro. To this day, even after putting him in the Stars HOF and building a statue for him I still don't think I ever got over that completely. It was a wild and weird time to see him wearing the Red Wings sweater

I knew Gretzky would be #1. That was a massive shock as a Canadian citizen to handle. Even though Oilers always beat my Jets, it never felt right after that. He was the biggest identifying figure for hockey in Canada.

As a Bruins fan, seeing Borque go to Colorado and finally win his cup was amazing. There were a lot of Colorado fans in Boston that year and my dad and i were two of them. He loved Borque! I was too young to realize how amazing this player was. 8 Norris trophies. Wow!

Being just a little older, a shock from the early-mid 70s was seeing Bobby Orr as a Blackhawk, which just beats out Esposito going from Boston to the Rangers. Also, you notice how many times the Rangers are on this board???😊
