The SLA in my home is tighter than any international corporate conglomerate, 100,000+ user organization I ever had to support lol. The SLA is 100.1% uptime or I get complaints, woke up out my sleep, no breakfast, lunch, or dinner until the issue has been resolved. Unless, there is a power outage. The outage is always my fault.

Now that Mikrotik have enabled the ASIC based L3 offloading in ROS V7 it's an extremely powerful bit of kit and will do L3 routing at 10g wire speed. You wont beat that for the price!

Strictly speaking, You can run it as a pure switch with RouterOS too. The SwitchOS is easier to configure VLANs, but You can do it on both of them. And with RouterOS you get all its features - even using it as a pure switch.

@@Enonymouse_ No, not really. I use both, and they are equally rock solid. ROS has a lot more features than SwOS. SwOS has a much easier interface, and when You have similar products, the ones that are SwOS only are cheaper. Each of them has its uses. You just have to buy accordingly.

The CRS317 (and the CRS3xx Mikrotik switches in general) are vastly underappreciated. Hardware L3 switching was added to the CRS317 in RouterOS Release 7.0beta7. I've had hardware L3 routing running on my 317 for almost the past year. Mikrotik added hardware routing to all of their CRS3xx switches in RouterOS 7.1beta6. When you bring these switches up to that level, they will run circles around ANYTHING in their class.

Mikrotik has had a line of 10GbE switches out for a few years now. I swapped out an old Quanta LB6M (with it's LOUD!!! fans) for the CRS 317 a little over 2 years ago - even ordering it from Latvia directly since that's where I got the cheapest price, even adding in shipping. They work great for home or small business.

I've been a long supporter of Mikrotik ever since I started migrating my network equipment to them 4 years ago. It's hard to beat the price for the vast feature set you get. The only negative I will mention is that the CLI and GUI take a while to get used to. But once you figure it out, it's smooth sailing.

Fun fact vlan 1003 is supposed to be a reserved vlan for token ring, but it’s also the vlan to present to Apple’s Airports if you want a separate subnet for your guest WiFi.

Thank you for covering SwOS on this unit! Most people just say to go with RouterOS because it's more featured packed (including everything SwOS does), but I always ask why? It's not being used as a router! I wonder how this stacks up to something like a HPE 1950 12XGT? Other than the fact that it's all SFP+. We've got nothing but HPE at work but with the massive price difference between those two switches MikroTik is looking pretty good...

Works well as a layer 2 switch but does not do so well with layer 3. Not incredibly picky about SFPs so far. FS generic (copper and fiber) work just fine. That blue light is a lighthouse BEACON for sure. Crazy bright even for blue LEDs

It's a bit more than that, RouterOS 7 introduces support for MC-LAG and some quite decent layer 3 offload. This makes it affordable and useful layer 3 switch when you have a BGP / OSPF fabric to use it in.

Suggestion: To avoid moving your webcam, resize your browser to be smaller than the full recording canvas, thus exposing your background. Place your webcam on one of the two sides, and leave the extra space black. This way you wouldn't have to fuss with it.

Before I got it, I thought there was no need for that many SFP+ (but I heeded sth’s warning about how often they replace the 4 port version due to growth)… then I bought a few rj45/SFP+… and found cheap SFP+ NICs… and now there’s only just enough ports.

Something to note about the Unifi 16-XG. There are many.. many revisions of it. I have hardware revision 12 or 13 and it's very quiet. I wouldn't say it's inaudible or silent but it's quiet. I personally modified mine by changing out its 2 x 30mm fans for 2 x 40mm Noctuas and now it's not audible at all for me and the temperature even lowered. As an owner of this switch I did some research prior to purchase and found the earlier revisions had a lot of issues. One of which was very loud fan noise but a lot of problems with dying RJ45 ports. This has all been corrected in the currently shipping version which they've been selling for about a year and a half now. The Mikrotik is really nice too of course and I did 100% consider this exact model before purchasing my 16-XG from Unifi but I felt it would be easier to do the fan mod I wanted on the Unifi with some 3D printed baffles and I knew I could get it inaudible once I had it, the Mikrotik was a bit more of a question mark in this regard and of course doesn't integrate into the Unifi Controller which while not super important is nice to have since all my stuff is Unifi.

I watch your content on and off. Funny enough, the first video I watched from you was the one on Mikrotik CRS305. Even more hilarious is the fact that I wasn't even aware of Mikrotik at that time and I was looking around for something that would let me do stuff (I have an IT but non-networking background). I was moving from netgear/linksys default and dd-wrt firmwares. Long story short, I kept digging into Mikrotik portfolio and I've now gone through a complete facelifting of my home network with all mikrotik at routing and core switching layers. Based on what I know, this switch you got is the current top of the line switch offering from Mikrotik (I happen to have the CRS309, which has the same Switch chip + SoC and is similarly capable with half the ports). There are a lot of benefits to use RouterOS in this switch (as well as anything from Mikrotik that allows it). In general if you are able to use RouterOS in a Mikrotik device then you have lots of management options winbox and/or web GUI via Linux/Mac/Win PC, full featured mobile App from Android and Apple, Home Assistant and Ansible integration for automation (using API) etc. The SwitchOS can only be managed over web console. In particular to this switch (as well as the CRS309), if you use RouterOS and don't mind living on the edge, you can deploy version 7, and that will allow for hardware offloading of basic IP switching. This can essentially turn this switch into an extremely capable monster, capable of 10Gbps VLAN routing, i.o.w. a basic wirespeed L3 switch. Based on the descriptions I've read that should be good enough for home environment. As far as I've learned by dabbling into SwOS the inter VLAN routing function is completely missing. I'd suggest keep dabbling into RouterOS 7 capabilities for this switch, and you can make this switch an even more prominent part of your network. Lastly, fruity and scented IPAs give me extreme heart burn and some of the most annoying hangovers. So, it's a complete no-no for me. Thanks and keep up the great work. P.S.: BTW according to Mikrotik website this switch is supposed to have included not 1 but 2 power cords. Since the middle of the pandemic I've been getting packages from Amazon and such with missing parts and accessories also. It's been quite annoying and I think is directly attributable to lack of human resources at play for various checkpoints in packaging. Oh well, 1st world problems.

You mentioned how loud they can be. In general anything rack mounted can be expected to be really loud. There are rack mounted servers that will give you tinnitus (ringing in the ears) if you spend enough time around them!

Been following your channel. Last year I started building out my ideal computer setup (Lian Li DK-05 desk with dual PC's with with EVGA FTW 3090/AMD 5950X). I needed a lab and came across your videos. Ended up getting a Netshelter CX 24U rack, Dream Machine Pro, 10G 16XG switch, 24 port POE switch and got some Supermicro 1u chassis with the D-1541 boards. Saw your videos and got some of the 1u builds you had in videos too. Also building the Chenbro NAS you made a video on for an interim NAS (I have a 45 Drives 45 drive Stornado I'll be bringing online eventually too, the Seagate Exos drives sadly doubled in price last few weeks). Now debating on getting these switches too, damn you :)

That's odd about the missing power cords as mine came with it. Maybe depending on who you order it from since they do make them for both US and International markets. Got mine from Amazon which pointed me to a reseller in Latvia. Ironically not too far from MikroTik's HQ. :)

I think my ideal use case for one of these would be in a lan party, having 4 of the ports going to a QSFP+ nic on a lancache server via a breakout cable, with the others going to CSS326's, which would then be connected to host machines, with the CRS317's gigabit ethernet port going to a router.

I have esentialy an identical set of components in my rack, UDMP, and both MikroTik POE and 10gb switches, one thing I can say, is I did try to sacrifice 8 ports and get the 8 port unifi 10gb switch, and ended up returning it, as lovely as it is to have it in the unifi controller, it is too buggy, it didn't work properly with half of my 10gb servers, I was running a pair of small MikroTik 5 port (4 SFP) switches ganged together, and moving to the MikroTik16 port switch, everything just works, no weirdness that some unifi hardware tends to have -- they seem to be always in beta.

I would love a 14-port 10Gb + 2-port 25Gb or 40Gb switch. I don't want to buy any of those older Brocade switches that use too much power and need to be unlocked with a license (even if there are people out there who can get those licenses for you). This switch still seems pretty good though. It's not like I need 25/40Gb but, like you said, I always want to upgrade just a bit further. My main server has a ConnectX-3 card (and those are cheap so I could buy more for other machines) so I can already use 40Gb.

Considering I have an entire column of my organized cables pegboard filled with that power cable, I'd actually be glad they didn't include them with the switch (NOTE: I still think it's complete BS that phone manufacturers are now not including USB C charge adapters).

The reason maybe BS to you. But it's something little we can to fight e-waste. Most people have collected enough adapters and cables over the years. I can imagine is little sh*tty if you just started with your first phone or other stuff. But you will see after a few years how many cables and stuff you have collected. I have a full box with this stuff up in the attic. Btw you have to blame EU parliament for pressuring companies to do more against e-waste. (apple still hasn't did sh*t though)

I bought this on your recommendation (among other channels recommending as well). I am really stuck. All I did was replace my old 10GB switch which had 4 10GB ports with this one because the hope was to get my home lab up and running all 10GBe. As soon as I installed this switch, rebooted in SWOS and I tested my 2 10GB computers with iperf3. Both prior would max out around 7-8Gbps. With this new switch I would get a whopping 2-3Gbps. Went to the forums looking for help Nothing. The documentation is laughable at best. Now trying to find a Cisco solution because this switch is horrible out of the box.

Great video! Perhaps when working with user-interfaces so spread out, you could just have your head float around the screen and bounce off the edges, like an olde thyme screensaver. Really force the viewer to engage with their mind. ;) Have you found it still to be effectively silent over the last two months? I've seen some reviews indicating it gets quite loud, but I think that might be specifically when more than 1 or 2 1000BaseT transceivers are installed. I'm considering this or a CRS309 for a 10Gbps backbone for my home/home office LAN, so I'd hopefully be using DAC for everything.

No power cables, huh? Is that just for the american market, perhaps? I bought three Mikrotik switches (crs328-24p-4s + 2x crs312-4c+8xg) earlier this year, and got two power cables with each. All of them safely resting at the top of the "never used power cables"-pile, of course.

I do like these budget switches, but the web portals could use some improvements. I wonder if they will open it up to opensource to allow custom UIS. Currently, they use the same gui for all versions, so options show up even if your equipment doesn't include it. They also make it very easy to lock yourself out. For example, the interfaces page shows all your interfaces, for which, each has a small D located next to it. Now if you get click happy and don't hover over it, that D means disable.

RouterOS is not for when you want to use it as a router, it is for when you need more features, flexibility and management options. RouterOS can be used for switching, it’s just more complicated to setup. But, if SWOS suits your needs, just use it.

I have a xg that and i cannot complain about the fan noise and dont hear it at all. given if noise was a complaint you can swap in some noctua 80mm fans.

How do you put 80mm fans out in a switch that is 1U in height? Just curious 🤔. 1U is significantly less than 80mm even 40 is at least close... Used to have XGs in my lab and switched to mikrotik last year. Because Afterall I expanded and ended up with 16 SFP+ on my rack

@@itmkoeln you are right thats my bad idk what i was thinking, i actually went and looked and they are 30mm fans but the point still stands that noctua makes replacement fans that you can then swap out if needed. In my case i got my switch on sale for about 500 at the time and when you have other unifi products is nice to use one interface to manage them all. also the unifi xg has 12 sfp+ and 4 ethernet ports that are 10gb so if you have devices that have a 10gb port like my motherboard its 1 less purchase for a sfp+ adapter

unifi is a premium but you get POE and 10G Rj45 and the unified system , stupid not to iinvest in the eco system if you already started .. the gem 2 switch 24 pro is amazing

I think I'm missing something. You didn't do any testing on the gear. What's the bandwidth limit for the backplane in a real world environment? Does it support copper SPF at 10Gig? If so, which ones work best? Which optical SFP's work best? Which ones are not supported? Is there a second video coming for this review?

Switch Os does not support winbox. Routeros which he switched from has way more features (even in a switch) and supports winbox

Is the connection between your UDM and Mikrotik ( At 4.53 the red utp cable (straight through right?) ) that gives internet access to the devices you have connected on the Mikrotik and it's gui as well.

Im growing my home lab, and Im fairly young. Im using PfSense as my router/firewall and so on. Is there any real reasons why you didnt go with PfSense with 10GB networking equipment? Im just curious as I want to make sure that I am making the best decisions.
