i'd like the ability to ssh into it. could we have the ability to set up ssh via the console? that way you can keep it off by default. but since it's a ras pi there's no reason other than just not wanting to

This is like an episode of The Twilight Zone where Data Center peeps evolve a concept that those outside call IoT. So strange that this is new to rack mounts but ubiquitous in other industries!

I am in the process of going into the 2.5G realm now. The cost and availability of 2.5G hardware, plus a lack of x8/x16 PCIe slots in my 2 main PCs (only the x1 slots are free), means 2.5G is the route I decided. Plus will be getting 2G fiber in the near future.

Fire up your Quick hot air rework gun, and float the EMMC off the TerraMaster's motherboard. BIOS should fail over to the NVMe drive. TerraMaster NAS boxes all work this way, but some of them have an easily removable USB thumb drive inside. EMMC is just a bit tougher to remove. A carefully placed Black Cat firecracker might work if you don't have a Quick workstation.

I'm curious as to how you came up with your final price. I've developed a few products with the Pico, and one of its greatest features is its affordability. I've had a difficult time including firmware development hours and miscellaneous product manufacturing time in cost analysis when hardware components make up only a small portion of the price.

Biggest development was getting SNMP to run on a small device. Combine that with low volume runs of fully assembled PCBs, and prices can still add up quick. On the final version, if demand is there, we should be able to scale up nicely and offer more aggressive pricing. But even still, we're a fraction of what's currently available.

I don't get it. Why are the usual $5-10 zigbee or Wifi TH sensors not good enough?

No integration with any monitoring systems used by SMBs. These will send data to almost anything, including Home Assistant and SNMP monitors, making them a good fit for homelabbers AND businesses.

Yes, SNMPv3 is on the roadmap. Whether that's a day 1 feature or not depends on a lot of things, but it is in development for sure.

LONGGGGG Overdue/ long forgotten as there were a number of mickey mouse legacy attempts at this! 1. DC barrel for VCC ... Hell Yeah! 2. Make noise .. local alarm see ASIN: B0CXS43G9N 3. Magnetic mount ... add a square inch of steel to place a button neodymium magnet and add a bit of weight. 4. Is there an app for that? Forward hi temp threshold traps to a notification app which you could sell as an upgrade with a monthly subscription along with cloud based logging via something like NetXMS. 5. Video ... add a camera module option to view a physical thermometer for a sanity check ... which by the way was how I did it for billion dollar banks lol! 6. Option for Out of band management with RF LoRa backhauled into RMM or cellular backup access ASIN‎. B099RM1XMG EXCELLENT IDEA!!! I want to work with you to sell it / make it. What's your X handle?

As much as I want to have a laugh at every basic household object becoming smart (I remembered to plug in my mousepad today), this is actually a really cool project. It has genuine purpose and as simplistic as it seems, could be a cool project to teach my kids about. Well done, man. Speaking of, any plans on kits for kids and the tech lovers with little knowledge based on this?

I couldn't find anything explaining how the 1TB limit of Xeon Scalable v2 CPUs applied when using Optane; thank you for mentioning that the Optane PMem doesn't count towards this limit, as this as it was something I was really wanting to know! If you have encountered this information written down anywhere I'd love a reference to it.

This is pretty cool. We considered doing something like this ourselves a long time ago because of the sort of terrible state of the small sensor space (and it's almost universally broken SNMP), but... feature creep, you know.

I, just use some Zigbee based sensors and Home Assistant, I use these all over the place, I have an exhaust fan setup above my rack, it also runs off a zigbee plug, server gets hot, fan turns on, server cools down, fan turns off.....

To me the difference in VRAM is a non-issue. The ADA SFF doesn't have enough raw power to crank out visuals / workloads that would saturate all 20gb without it choking on itself.

re jumbled letter brands: amazon makes random sellers get a trademark or something. They're trying to outsource seller verification to the us trademark office, which runs super far behind and won't stop trash vendors anyway. So... likely not a quality psu. Glad I dodged a bullet skipping this case a few weeks ago. Switched to unas. First tried the 810 and it's layout is atrocious. 810a is on the way and is supposed to be better. The 810 is... Imagine this case, but if they tucked the mb in a gap on the side and left the top cavity completely clear - horrible. My nas build is going to use an m2 slot with a jmb582-based adapter to get two extra sata ports with a low profile. Here's hoping it works.

Been there, done that... more or less. 🙂 Back in the mid to late '80s I was part of the IT support team on a project at a manufacturing facility. We were setting up custom applications on 450 DEC VAXstations throught the shop floor and office areas. They booted across Ethernet from microVAX II minicomputers in a central computer room. To run the main applications we had larger VAX servers. Needless to say that all together they put off a lot of heat. We needed something to tell us how hot, and provide alerts and the option of automatic shutdown. I bought a off-the-shelf panel-mount temperature meter with RS-232 serial interface, a K-type thermocouple and a stylish Bud enclosure. That was hooked up to a management system microVAX, and a system engineer wrote some code to poll the temperature data. We even set it up to send pages to numeric pagers, using the building number for the area code and exchange 3-digit fields and the last 4 for the actual temperature. What you've done here is similar; keep it simple to make it flexible, all while keeping the cost down. You've basically created a tool, and left the actual usage up to the buyer. I could see using these same devices as outdoor temperature monitors, assuming the could be made resistant to the weather and temperature extremes. I wish you good luck, and have fun!

The DC barrel jack could also be at least voltage monitored so that distribution voltage can be reported (current consumption via induction coils is more costly, but can also be advantageous).

I wonder if the game ready drivers were installed on the 4000 ADA or not? It officially only has studio drivers but you can still download/install the same game ready drivers from the 4060. That might fix the bad 0.1% lows. I definitely noticed an uplift when installing them on my A2000.

Adding a camera would likely shut the door on this product for some orgs though. I'd rather keep the focus to one or two things (temp/humidity) and do them better than anything else.
