16 Sorts - Disparity Loop

In this visualization, the distance of each vertex from the center is determined by how correct of a position that number is in. For example, if the number 1 is in the middle of the array, it will produce a very short line, as it is supposed to be the first element in the array. However, if the number 1 is near the beginning or end of the array, it will produce a much longer line. This means that, when fully sorted, every vertex will be at its max distance, and a loop will be produced.

I'm pretty late to this, but apparently it requires O(n^2) space even in the best cases (even tho it's O(n) time complexity). Think about that. Sorting a billion integers would require memory allocation of 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (10^18, or a quintillion) integers.

Brilliant as usual! I suppose the more "sorted" a point is, the closer it is to the edge of the circle. So the length of a particular "radius" is a measure of how "far away" it is from the position it should be. More sorted = more towards the "edge".

I really want to see the Merge sort in place trial multiple times to see if this same “upside down heart” shape appears every time (1:15). That shape appears randomly all over Maths and Nature and I found it really cool to see it here

Due to the nature of the sort and the visualization, that shape will occur every time. At that state, the sort has split the array into two halves, of which both are themselves in sorted order. Since each half is itself sorted, the right half will have its smallest elements at the beginning (the very top) and they will increase in size as they go around clockwise. And vice versa for the left half starting at the very bottom. And since the visualization moves a point a certain distance away from the center based on how accurate of a position it is in, the elements at the top in that state will always be in a near perfect position, and will be placed far out. At the same time the elements at the bottom will be the most out of place since it consists of the largest elements in the array (in the right half) and the smallest elements in the array (in the left half), so the dots in this bottom section will be placed closer to the center.

As for how that shape is made mathematically, it is when the radius of a circle is reduced as the absolute value of the angle from top dead center (or any specific angle) increases. So basically, if you were to start drawing a circle from the top and as you went around you reduced the radius of the circle you were drawing as you were drawing it but still keeping it centered about the original center position.

As a musician, a stone mason, and mathematician I’ve always pondered how the great pyramids and megalithic structures around the world were constructed.
