Great video Nat. As I watched the video I thought back over my last 3 years and wanted to share some of the things I wish I knew if I were to start again. 1) Architecture isn’t just designing buildings. You need a mix of skills - or a willingness to learn. A lot of students go into architecture school thinking they’ll just be drawing buildings and creating cool designs. Architecture is a mix of so many different skills and so you need a mix of skills to be successful - or - you need a willingness and an open mind to learning new skills and not getting stuck on old ways. 2) Architecture is difficult. Just because there’s no exams, it doesn’t mean it’s easy. In fact. Architecture can be quite difficult. Architecture is very much a profession involving a lot of problem solving and deep thinking. It’s not necessarily an easy course to study but if you’re up for the challenge it can be extremely rewarding. 3) It’s a long road ahead. Get ready for a long journey - you don’t stop learning. Ever. I don’t just mean get ready for 5-7 years of formal education - I mean get ready to learn every single day for the rest of your life. Architects, or good architects, never stop learning. Something my dad always tells me is to improve in any little way, every single day. Doing so, you’re becoming a better person and you’re changing your life for the better. Get ready for a long degree, followed by a long profession of learning and experimenting with new things. 4) There’s no “set way” of doing things. Try new things and experiment. Architecture is subjective. There’s no set-in stone way of designing or doing things. Those students who are most successful in architecture school are the ones who step outside their comfort zone, step away from what everyone else is doing and experiment with their own ideas and ways of doing things. 5) Those who practice outside of their formal education do best. Architecture school, and any formal education really, are made to teach generalised information for the masses. If you want to gain specialised skills and learn something difficult that others aren’t, you need to practice architecture outside of your university degree. You need to push yourself to better yourself in ways others aren’t. That’s how you create opportunities for yourself and strive to be a better person. 6) Don’t get discouraged by other’s experiences from school. Social media is filled with architecture memes and comments from other students, complaining how they don’t get any sleep, they don’t have any money, they haven’t learnt anything. Don’t let other people’s experiences discourage you from studying architecture. If you stick to your own guns and stay in your own lane. Focus on bettering yourself every single day in every single way - you’ll find yourself getting better and better. Don’t let what everyone else is doing influence you and your thoughts. 7) The more time you spend on a project, the better it’s going to be. But your design will never be finished. I’ve found that the more time you spend on something, the better you’re going to be at it. If you were to put students’ grade into a chart against how much time they spend on their classes - you’d see a direct correlation between the amount of time they spend on it to the grade they get. The more time you spend, the higher the grade. You need to be able to manage your time and not leave everything for the last minute. And again, this is something you’ll learn with experience. 8) You must be a good listener. Architecture is very much about listening. If you don’t listen, you can’t design to the client’s brief, you can’t work with engineers, surveyors, builders and other contractors, you can’t make the changes your teachers are suggesting. If you’re a good listener, you’ll go very far. 9) Just say yes. There’s nothing stopping you from doing a semester and then dropping out. You have plenty of time. If you’re 17 years old or 47 years old, you’re not even halfway through your life. You’ve got plenty of time. Don’t think that you’ll be wasting 6 months of your life for trying architecture school. It’s an experience nonetheless and if you think you’ll enjoy it - just say yes and give it a go. Having this give it a go mentality will take you far in anything you do in life, so it’s worth adopting this mindset. I hope someone finds this helpful. @@cazwalt9013 That's why God invented engineers. Architects don't need it. Calculus was my worst subject in college. I never used it after barely passing that year. Geometry, however, is something that is essential and you really should have an excellent background in it.

oh the late night coffee sessions and model making in studio are some of the best times with studio friends but the worst times. It's the strangest thing hahaha I am waiting until archi schools stop requiring models so much though!! I don't think a lot of firms still make them actually. And if the firms do, most outsource nowadays!!

@@UnravelingArchitecture I work in mostly interior design, and our company makes small-scale physical models because we work with a lot of materials that vary in shadow quality and light patterns. They're mostly quick studies though - like how Pixar tests ideas to animate - before going to finalize an iteration or change order. Sometimes we do lifesize mockups for one interchangeable component.

Great comments. I'm also a graduate of OSU, class of 1970 with a B.S. in Architectrue (I think that I may have been the first to go that route). M.Architecture from Clemson University, 1980. I'm now 74 and still at it. Currently, I'm designing a 20k sf museum for our county. I've worked for medium-sized architectural firms, very large firms, but the most enjoyable and by far the most time was as the principal of my own practice. I kid my friends who ask, "Why aren't you retired?' I'm having too much fun. You will find that you can identify work-around practices which your clients will never know about - don't take that route. Do the best that you can with everything that you do from designing that ADA compliant restroom to designing that vast atrium lobby. It's not been work. I've had fun all my life. Enjoy the journey. honestly this is very reassuring. I'm planning to study architecture starting this fall and being the stressed, perfectionist, over-achiever I am, I've been doing a ginormous amount of research and I was, therefore, aware of most things you said. The most discouraging thing about it is that people doubt of my capacities (my friends and family), even though I genuinely think and feel like it's the right career path for me. hey, for anyone thinking of (or currently) studying architecture I just wanted to leave this message here. A lot of people and teachers highlight the hard work and time that goes into architecture, I do however want to mention that it is possible to study architecture with a healthy work-life balance and have your weekends and evenings free. Sometimes it may not be possible in the final week of your project, but aside from that it is. Personally I fell into the classic trap of workaholism when starting architecture. but after declining mental health I decided to treat it more as a 9 to 5. With this structure you may not always have the most impressive project, but you can have a more balanced life. Secondly to design it is also incredibly beneficial to have varied experiences, thus actively making time for multiple hobbies can give you a new perspective on a project. Always do what feels right for you and create the balance you desire and to finish here is a little joke I think is fitting: "What do they call a graduated medical student at the bottom of his class?" " a doctor"

Hey, so first of all, it's ok to feel like this and sometimes it's not bad to think this way because it makes you consider so many other options that can be so great for you. I was literally on the same boat as you and idk if you wanna read my response (it's kinda lengthy) but if you do, hopefully it helps. My whole high school years I wanted to be an architect, that's all I worked for. I did a bunch of art/design courses and calculus in HS so I could get the most basics down for the design side and the math side. I applied to a school in NY and got accepted, as well some in my home state, but for some reason at the very end, I just started to feel like maybe architect wasn't for me (which actually broke my heart and made me very upset for my 1st year of college). I ended up going into college doing my generals first, I was undecided in my major, then I thought maybe I wanted to do Graphic Arts & Design, after another 2 more semesters I realized I still wasn't really happy with my almost decided major (Graphic Arts & Design). With the start of the pandemic I had time to kind of slow down and really think. After much thought I finally realized one thing, I've always liked the idea of business since I was young, and since I had already done a lot of calculus I decided that I wanted to do a business major in Finance. Now in my first semester doing business courses, I finally feel happy, but most of all, excited to learn which is the way I felt before becoming a senior in high school. Getting back that feeling of excitement and desire to learn is what made me realize that business is what I want to do. So don't worry, things always work out. Maybe architect is for you and you're just nervous, but maybe these thoughts can help you see that the possibilities are endless and there's so much this world offers. Really think about how you feel and maybe that can help you. Anyways, I wish you the best and may you do great this year and your senior year! Good luck! (:

Hey there! I am a landscape architecture student from Europe, and our field is extremely underappreciated in comparison to 'regular' architecture. So on top of agreeing with everything you said (because we deal with exactly the same stuff, it's the same major, after all, everything is just leafier and greener lol) we have to also deal with always being put down and being called gardeners. (I’m learning rhino right now and oh god the amount of commands) Over here we can’t be in studio but thankfully I decided to roommate with all architect buddies so we constantly bounce off of each other’s ideas. Definitely have some doubts about the major but only on deadline nights!

I got my Architecture degree in 1984 and it sounds like the academic experience hasn't changed much in almost 40 years. The one exception is the software. We didn't have any back then. We actially drew with pencils! Physical models were tough then too. We would typically do quick sketch models or study models for preliminary juries and a much more refined model for the final jury. Some of the 3D software now almost eliminates the need for a model. Good luck with your career.

My dad graduated with PhD in architecture from one of the most prestigious schools in Italy. I thought, hey, why not, let's give it a try. As I was in high school and looked at the bigger picture, I realized being an architecture means you are an artist... you have to be super creative. And I got none of them... so glad I didn't major in it. I would have been an absolute failure.

I think you're a bit hard on yourself. Everyone is an artist at some point everyone thinks differently. That's art and that's creativity itself. Also that's the Idea of going into a school .. you learn .. and then you apply your ideas and thoughts and creativity into a project. How can you call yourself lacking something without even trying to search for it. Everyone is different. Everyone can be an artist. It's not a fixed thing. You can't call yourself a doctor without getting a M. D degree.. that's understandable. But you can't call yourself not an artist without even giving yourself the chance of wonder and imagination

I'm in only my third week of first semester and we've already had to build three models so far in just one class.. Sleep no longer exists to me. Oh I’m so sorry - you’re really balancing a lot. I recommend waking up early to knock out homework - there are limited distractions in the morning. Set a “time limit” for yourself - so you aren’t killing yourself for a grade or a project. You have bigger things to worry about. Grades don’t necessarily matter. So yes, please get the work done, but I hope you can find a better balance and take care of yourself mentally and physically

Great video! You seem to have so much passion for architecture, and we need more of that! Too many people underestimate the power of architecture, not just for functionality, but for well-being. Also I studied Electrical Engineering at City College of New York, and one of the inside jokes my Engineering classmates and I had was that we NEVER saw any architecture majors and wonder if they even existed, even though we initially took the same classes. yeesh. I just wrapped up my first year of architecture school and i’m pretty discouraged. I love architecture, and creating, and architecture as an art form. But man this year was so so rough. I didn’t even get to go on campus because of covid, and I just learned everything from my laptop in my room at home. I came here looking to see what the future could potentially hold, some outside motivation that could drive me to continue doing this. As of right now I am BEYOD discouraged and burnt out from the overwhelming amount of stress and expectations of my professors. I so enjoy the idea of this field and creating spaces for people... but I’m just not sure if I can handle mentally. On the bright side I have learned so much about time management and responsibilities, so I am happy I have that. However that doesn’t change the fact that I was just up for 36 hours straight trying to finish my final project, and then still not being satisfied with my work at the end (also also getting ripped on by the jury). I feel like total shit. I’m going to take a week or so to calm down and decompress before making any decisions about the future. But if I do chooses to stay, I really hope it gets better... i really don’t want to leave it edit: (i’m not trying to discourage anyone from going into this field, i just needed to get that off my chest, and everyone’s experience is different! you won’t know how you feel until you try:))

Hi Peyton! In the defense of architecture school, I don't think many students had a good experience online. I hope that you don't give up on it just yet. This year was extremely challenging for many individuals. Architecture also plays on one's personal experiences and relationships with physical spaces - and that's near impossible to teach from your bedroom. I know this year students regardless of their major lost all motivation. But I hope you give it another shot. Next semester hopefully should be in person for everyone. There is so much more to learn, experience, and discover. You're learning such a unique skill set - and humans have universally practiced architecture for tens of thousands of years. If you think about it it's a universal language and can be incredibly inspiring. SO!! There is good and bad things about the major. But I hope next semester you still give it a go, and hopefully be surprised with how you grow as a designer

3rd year architecture student there. I agree with all your points! I think I have experienced almost all the same things all you talked about! My back is terrible...and the social life thing is totally true...the romance thing is so true too! When somebody dares somebody else, EVERYBODY KNOWS! but I love architecture and I don’t regret anything about It :) sometimes you have those architecture identity crisis moments...but I was also one of those who changed from biomed to architecture...and I feel like I’m the happiest in architecture school :)

hello! Thank you for your video. I am thinking of studying Architecture. Since I was a little child, I was always making designs, DIYs and especially "products" out of thick paper that can keep me more organized. For example, I created a small box, in which I can store my bracelets and other jewelry in a good manner so they can be easily used and in a beautiful manner displayed. Moreover, for a period of time (till now sometimes) I was obsessed watching youtube videos about tiny houses and how all the rooms and furniture can be placed in order to make life convenient for the owners. Also, I love thinking about houses, so that they can be functional and offer opportunities for people in their daily life, that people may haven't even thought about. I believe that the maximum functionality adds the real beauty. After having accomplished that, I am thinking about their beautiful extra features, such as colors, decorations, unusual shapes etc. I am more like a problem solver. I wouldn't say that I am fascinated with the idea of creating something "abstract", which has no functionality and also creates more problems to engineers. Moreover, I really respect the history of pure art, but that is not something I would like to be committed to. I love Maths and always having been good at it, but I wouldn't like studying engineering, since it is not that human-oriented. What do you think? Should I study Architecture?

If anyone in the comments is unsure about studying architecture, remember not every architect has dreamt their whole life of being one. I (in Europe) had dropped out of a COMPLETELY different course after 1.5 years with no idea what I wanted to do. Then I see a news report about Zaha Hadid’s death while on a family holiday, first time I EVER considered it and 5 years later am now studying for my masters in architecture. It has a high drop out rate (about a quarter dropped out in first year and we lost another quarter through people repeating the year) so don’t go in expecting an easy ride but I always adored how I was never bored (like my previous course rip)

This is how you know if you really want to become an architect... If your are working on a project that is neither for school or for work, you're doing the drafting, designing and model making until 2AM, and you wake up the next day with that project on your mind and you get after it with a great sense of enthusiasm...that should tell you.

I think the number one thing you need to consider is if you want to become a licensed architect make sure you are in an accredited program or are fine with doing the education alternative later when you are working in the field.

Thank you, it was the same when I graduated in "81 from arch school. It was a little different back then, we didn't have computers or the internet. I never learned to like coffee, so the all nighters were from shear determination (actually desperation). Everything was sketched, drawn, colored, lettered, and made by hand. I graduated in the middle of a recession, so nobody was hiring. My first job was working at a plant nursery. Crazy times. Keep up the good work!

Firstly I wanna say that i love your video! As an architecture graduate I can say that everything you said is completely accurate. One thing I do want to mention is that architectural education really does not prepare you for professional work. I think it’s important to mention because it could be assumed that studios are an emulation of the office environment and work culture, and maybe they were intended to be but they very much are not. Terms that sound so common place like gutter or rafter are surprisingly very scarce in architectural education. The main focus of the education is to shape the way you think in terms of design and the nitty gritty that is expected of you professionally is largely missed. I could rant about how I would reform the education but I would highly recommend to anybody considering this route to learn construction on your own, and I mean really learn it. Construction classes in architecture school will not cut it because studios suck the life out of you and make it really hard to focus on these secondary classes like construction and structures (although they are the forefront of realistic and professional work). So make sure to visit construction sites after hours and take tons of pictures and notes. Maybe work a job in construction after graduating for a little bit. Definitely watch KZbin videos of all of the talented contractors and handymen (and women). These are slept on but invaluable resources, and I really wish I knew that.

Lol, I can sign under every point, especially the model part. I remember it took me a whole week to make my first one, it was a wall-section of a two-storey timber frame residential house. When I showed it to my non-architecture friends they were like: THAT took you a WEEK?
