Just made a pair of insole flip-flops. BRILLIANT! A little silly too, but I’ll get over it 😅

Nice list Chris. While I'm no long-distance thru hiker nor an ultralight fanatic, I'm always up for shaving some weight. Regarding clothing, I don't skimp on socks and often bring a few extra pairs simply because soaked socks sucks :D Also, last year I switched from using a jetboil to an Esbit stove with the fuel cubes. It's small, lightweight and very inexpensive. I can fit my whole "kitchen" inside the pot -(including the stove, folding spork, matches/lighter, about 8 cubes and a homemade tinfoil windscreen - and it all weighs about 14 oz. Thanks for the constant tips! Love the greenbelly bars too. -Jeff

Rock n roll Jeff. Read a lot about the Esbit stoves - never actually tried though. Will check it out. Thanks for the notes... and glad you enjoy the bars :)

You're better off giving yourself an enema to clear out your colon and getting rid of that weight than the 4 grams of a toothbrush handle.

Great tips. Thanks. My tip, pack coffee granules in a little Systema spice pot, no paper waste and saves money on buying the sachets

It's no wonder you started a successful business, great presence and thought. I have bought your food, really enjoy it. A super light camp shoe is the imitation crocs at Walmart, lighter than my Xero sandals by a good bit and they smash down easy.

Much appreciated Dan. Interesting. Will keep an eye out next time at Walmart ;)

I might not be a true ultralighter (I am not willing to part with my jetboil minimo for something that just boils water, I do pack some onions almost every time) but I have ditched camp clothes and didn't have any issues with it. Also there is no way I would go with a liquid fuel stove anywhere near vegetation unless it's really cold. I don't think that the risk of starting forest fire is worth the few saved grams

Fuel Canister in water to guesstimate how much fuel you have remaining is awesome. Thanks!

Make sure the canaster doesn’t have air trapped under the bottom or you will get a false reading

MSR canisters have the makings on the can. When you float it, you can see how much fuel

I think the comparison to Alcohol stoves is a bit misleading. No mention of the weight of the alcohol that is needed to burn. If you need to boils 2 cups of water, how much alcohol is needed?

Interesting that the shoes you were wearing aren’t trail runners. Do you actually use Escalante on the trail?
@Greenbelly
@Greenbelly 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, I use all sorts actually. Running shoes (escalante), trail runners (brooks cascadia), 'boot-like trail runners' (la sportiva wildcats), and hiking sandals (bedrock). Depends on the trail and my mood :)

I prefer to pack my gorilla tape around an old Costco card, then hide a couple razor blades in the first 2 wraps.

The whole backpacking community needs to quit thinking hand sanitizer is adequate for washing your hands. It does NOT treat norovirus, which ends up popping up in the back country every year.

Cutting a toothbrush in half or using a tiny one as shown to save, what, .01oz, is asinine and almost childish. I can't take anyone seriously who does these things.
