Magnepan is a bass tease! They introduced a wonderful nonplanar woofer as part of their prototype "Magnepan 30.7 Mini for condos" in 2019. We waited and waited and waited. The woofer was a no show. Now we have a similar prototype Ultra Wide-Band Bass System in 2022. We are waiting and waiting and waiting.....

YES! Mr.Martin, for YEARS I have felt that the best place in our rooms for many speakers MAY not be the BEST place for the BASS portion of their output. There is POTENTIALLY more "flexibility" with good sounding STAND MOUNT speakers with subs placed in THEIR best place in the room. Speaker engineers spend much R&D time and resources on speaker enclosure size and WHERE to place drivers within them . . . the driver within the enclosure is a sound source, of course. THEN we the consumers, come along and place our speakers (also a sound source- obviously :-) within our room which is in itself an enclosure . . . NO WONDER our listening rooms are SO crucial to what, in the end, we hear :-) THANK YOU Mr.Martin for your EXCELLENTLY produced videos - SUPER ENJOYABLE !!! The Magnepan UBS sounds like THE answer to getting a FULL and accurate full range signal from even an LRS! CONGRATS TO ALL and happy listening !!!

My solution for the bass is to use a mass loaded transmission line speaker, and to tune it so it uses room lift. My stand mount design called the MLTL-6 uses a nominal 6" woofer (actual diameter of center of the surround is ~5.25"), and it is essentially flat in my room to ~32Hz. I am now building a tower version with the same driver, that should extend this to ~28Hz. I would love to hear the Magnepan UBS. But like any separate sub/woofer the challenge is *always* going to be phase. Edit - thank you very much for this video! I learned several things, and you put a number of aspects about bass reproduction into context, that is very helpful, I think.

I bypassed the passive crossovers in a pair of 3.7i speakers and used Hypex 503 DSP plate amps along with two 12" woofers and a Hypex 253 plate amp on each side. With the digital crossovers, EQ and sealed woofer boxes the system is unrivaled. The cheap low part count series crossovers in the 3.7i seriously limit the performance of the speakers and cause lots of on and off axis frequency response problems. The bass out of four Eminence 12" woofers is fantastic.

Listening to this discussion I'm reminded that Roy Allison was trying to address the room issue with his design of the Allison One Speaker some 50 years ago. He published many papers on speaker placement, and specifically the design he came up with that removed some of the inherent problems mentioned in this video. It's interesting (or a coincidence) that Magnepan put their USB speakers in a triangular cabinet similar to the Allison One. I think someone at Magnapan owned the Allisons in the day!

When I was a first year sound engineering student, the teacher (a professional recording engineer) commented on our use of "boosters". Boosters? "Yes, you know those slider things that you people always boost" You mean the equalizer? "No, the boosters... well do any of you cut?" Cutting frequencies are more effective than boosting. That's why Robert Moog used this technique when developing the first synthesizer.

Tom says that the frequency response of the cone drivers in the UWBS goes up into the upper midrange. How do these cone drivers integrate with the planar speaker? One of the more significant features of a planar speaker like the Maggie is that the driver is very low pass - the mylar film is microns thick, extremely light, and moves very quickly whereas cones have significantly more mass by comparison, thus I would think be much slower to respond than the planar. Seems odd and contradictory to me to mix planars and cones up into the upper midrange. I would think it would sound odd compared to the planars alone.

I achieved perfect bass integration with my Maggie 1.6's and 2 Vandersteen 2w subwoofers. This along with biamping with tubes on midrange and treble with transistors on bass I have the best of both worlds. I also recommend rigid stands (Myesound) for the Maggie's. With these some Maggie owners may not need subwoofers, depending on their room. They will certainly improve the bass and everything else across the board! I got the best results by not using the passive crossover that came with the subwoofers. The bass blend is seamless and musical. With or without the passive crossover the subwoofers totally disappeared. No, I don't think subwoofer integration is all that difficult. I mentioned this on other channels.

the industry is presenting itself to the younger people under 45s group with this level of acumen. While it’s entirely on point, having ‘Mr Rodgers’ explain a speaker on Friday’s as a series is anathema to TAS. As wonderful and as kind as this interview is, because genuinely this is an honest attempt. It is however time for him to stand down and take a humanities course in a recent decade or teach someone this profession who would like to learn.

Lyngdorf have been using wide band boundary woofers for years (800hz) but are best Intergrated using dsp. Not sure what's so ground breaking but if they can get these to market at a price that's comparable cost to their LRS+ speakers they'll have a hit.

This will likely be the high end system -- more economical versions are in development. The challenge, BTW, was to do this with a compact dipole woofer, which has the advantage of reducing modal interaction with the room. Most folded baffle dipole woofers are quite big. Ripole-like designs are compact, but they aren't wide band because of cavity resonances.

Why are the woofer not divided into two separate kabinets, one for each speaker (8 woofers per unit)? I don't believe you can integrate one woofer as well with two speakers unless it's dead silent above 50 Hz

Second comment. Like Paul M. at PS Audio stated, leave the mains to run full range as they were designed, add a subwoofer for the last octave. Keep it out of the way of the mains. Again, I have the subwoofer set at 35 Hz. and down, which is where the ML Classic 9's begin to fall off. You never hear it unless the source falls into it's crossover set point.

My I add? I have the Classic 9's (passive like the Neolith!) paired with the Dynamo 1600x subwoofer and Anthem room corrected in my 18x24' dedicated listening space which took care of a resonance at 25 Hz.. Joe V. worked very hard with specific bass cabinets, DIPOLE arranged aluminum bass drivers and single point xover to make this hybrid work. Parasound Halo preamp and A21 drive the ML and it's output drives the 1600x which is crossed over at 35 Hz. Sorry, but I don't seem to have a bass problem when it comes to symphonic bass drum hits and the lowest notes from the pedal division of some of the largest pipe organs down to 32' CCCC = 16Hz. My ML's are 13.5' apart and I sit 19' from them. The room is empty, treated minimally with AST acountic panels. It's a huge, wide sound. Lets just enjoy the music and quit getting so damned TANGLED up in the gear so much. 😊

I have magnepan 1.6's and they have been my endgame speakers since 2005. I think they can surpass the performance of the 1.7i and its replacement and here's how: Biamping the 1.6 with a solid state Amp on the bass inputs and tubes on the mid and treble along with Myesound stands the 1.6 will astonish you. With this set up you will have the best of both worlds; superior solid state deep bass and superior tube midrange tone, and presence. You may not want or need a subwoofer. The 1.7's and 1.8's can not allow this type of biamping due to their single set of inputs. The amplifiers to be used with these would have to be a single stereo amplifier or monoblocks. With these you won't be getting the best of the tube and solid state worlds unless you have at tube preamplifier and a subwoofer. I wanted everything and refused to compromise. I am using a rogue audio perseus magnum preamplifier along with a classic adcom 555 mk2 (for bass) and a classic conrad/johnson mv55(midrange & treble). For extra extended lows I have a pair of Vandersteen 2w's. The speed and musicality of these subs can keep with planers and stats. I used the external passive crossover that came with the 2w's for awhile but took it out of the system. I have a far more seemless integration between the panels and the subwoofers. The disappearance of the subwoofers is amazing and the 1.6's can very easily absorb the power of both amplifiers.

I have heard this sub system with the LRS+ at APOXNA. It is an incredible system. Powered by two big Brystons. My understanding is that this prototype has been in development for years and is, in no way, even close to production. No spec's., pricing and other details have been revealed. I also understand that there is some level of DSP involved. I seriously question if this will ever be a commercial reality as it has been shown now for a number of years and not once, have I heard any comment on when it may actually come to market. Magnepan needs to step up and give us better information. Please do not think I am anti Magnepan! I have owned 4 pairs over time and currently use, and love, my 3.7i's. Therc is no magic fix for great siunding integrated bass. The room in which those bass notes are reproduced is the problem. Room acoustics are crazy and very difficult to fix. The dimensions and surfaces of a room creates extremely complex effects in bass frequencies (And really, for that matter, all frequencies!) which are very difficult, if not impossible to fix with any driver no matter how good or or however cleverly placed or with eq. Slap back echo, phase, resonances creating different sounding bass at different places in the room. nearfield reflections, room leakage, etc. Yes! There are lots of problems above 80hz.

You might be correct. Magnepan did the setup, so we have assumed it was reasonable. Admittedly, it was done quickly, with no claim to being perfect. Linkwitz has knowledge well beyond ours, but the UBS does seem to resemble, in concept and placement, the Elliot dipole woofer that Linkwitz admires and has learned from. We freely admit we don’t know enough to technically determine if the UBS works purely on those grounds (and anyway we are not privy to many design details). So we listened. That isn’t perfect either, of course.

I can't believe in this day and age folk still refer back to IMF speakers, which are known for having deep bass that is entirely disconnected from the music. How do i know? I owned a pair for a decade, and swapping them for Alon open baffle speakers with a sealed 12" bass cabinet was the biggest upgrade my system ever underwent, proof that the transmission line speakers were really holding things back.

@@scottwolf8633 i used to sell the damn things. But times have moved on and those designs deserve to be left in the past. Funny how no big sound systems uses transmission lines...they clearly know some things you dont. I would never in a million years let any transmission line speakers near my room again, and IMF / TDL are the worst offenders. Slow bass, boxy midrange and spitty treble aside, they are butt ugly. You wouldn't know, but grown ups tend to prefer to share our living spaces with more organic shapes. IMF should be consigned to history's dustbin, anyone who claims they're a good speaker is just broadcasting their ignorance. There are so many better designs available today, even for blind audiophiles like yourself. if you simply must have something ugly, I suggest Nola. At least they sound decent. Then again, that clearly isnt your priority either. Try Bose? Happy to help.

Wait! This is T.A.S. and I am hearing real honest commentary! Has something happened lately that I am unaware of? Have we had a St. Patrick moment there and the oily snakes have been purged? Some honest soul please clue me in! Last time I read that "magazine" there were rave reviews about the audibility of power sockets. Or is this just an anomaly?

Two UBS towers were placed on the left and right walls approximately in the plane of the main speakers (that might have been forced by the room we used). We don’t know the crossover frequency, sorry.

I will never understand why anyone calling themselves an "audiophile" would refuse to add subwoofers to their system. You go on and on about bass but deliberately leave out the thing that is designed for bass. You don't even know what you're missing because there is no bass below whatever your mains can reproduce. This makes no sense.

Also, the best position for mains is rarely the best position for low bass response in a room

15 minutes of content in over 50 minutes of monolog. Mr. Martin seems to have no idea how good bass (in living spaces) has been available for many decades. I prefer to assume that he - very typically for many in the audio press - was designing the (non) problem for the UBS to solve. I would suggest living with some Linkwitz speakers and Klipschorns/Jubilee to get better informed about possibilities in bass.

A "Slow" woofer is just not able to start and stop fast enough to be in perfect time and phase with the rest of the frequencies due to overhang, etc. A lighter, moving mass with a motor that is incredibly huge has more precise control over the cones movement which allows the woofer to keep in time with the rest of the drivers.

The answers ARE in fact simple. A room has to be physically suited and actively treated to be usable for high fidelity audio playback, or just be packed with a lot of stuff on the right spots (everywhere) that will have somewhat the same effect. No hifi system is better than the room it's in and both rooms and speaker placements shown in this video are true nightmares making this video fairly pointless, sorry. Buying more stuff will never adress the issue that you put the wrong speaker in a shit room.

I agree the rooms showed looked horrible to any system! The conversations regarding sound between pro Audio and Home Audio are a world apart. But one thing in common is placement and room acoustics. Home theatre or Audiophile is far easier if the owners are willing to tune the room and not be bitches to their gear. I have a full theatre 5.2 System with Maggie MMg front Set active and Martin logan Lx 16 Surrounds! I will tell you this, Home theatre sucks, the Maggies can do it all when set up for the listener position! One other thing is I have two 15" sealed custom Subs powered by a Crown Amp that has full DSP and tuned by REW! The Maggies play 50 hz with authority then shit hits the fan so the subs come around 55hz and fill the butthole. Now for you who are still listening I do not use those subs often (till wife goes away for a bit). I also have two inexpensive Martin Logan ported dynamo ported 8" tuned in that work at the lower volumes, if not my wife would be texting me to turn the shit down, but at lower volumes you do not want the sound pressure and it sounds better!

@@Pumpndump897 very true! Most audiophiles could learn a lot from the studio field though. You dont have to build a dedicated super room to heavily improve the joy of listening to a good system at home. In most cases its just a matter of that the majority have not experienced a good room with proper speaker placement, Absolute Sound could adress that subject more. But of course, that wont sell any cable ads. Fremer has been in enough studios to tell people the difference. I can imagine balancing those subs are an adventure! Its a matter of taste and wanted presentation of course, in my opinion Quads/Maggies/Logans perform their best in perfect triangle mid field setups in larger rooms where they have meters of air to the closest first reflections. In a problematic room these speakers will basically result in twice the problems. While Maggies can be great and a lot of fun listening to, I see a lot of people put them in rooms just not physically suitable for such a speaker setup, they would get a lot more joy from finding another speaker. Maggies are obviously the wrong speaker for that room with that left wall opening, a lot of tilted problems. In that small room, just forget about it and get a good set of mid field stand mounts.

Ya these stuffy dudes always focus on the equipment, and throw more, and more, and more $$$ into hardware. They never ever consider taking measures such as significant and proper bass absorption / proper mid and high diffusion to actually improve the acoustics of the room itself FIRST. Makes a huge and very real improvement when done right... Want good bass? Then do something to actually reduce the overhang, boom, and uncontrolled resonance / ringing under the Schroeder frequency... (physical bass traps, NOT electronic manipulation) Probably can't get it perfect, but doesn't have to be to get real results..

The integrating of a subwoofer system is just such a misnomer I am utterly tired of hearing it. And theoretically means you haven't tried it out yet and experimented properly, TM. Tired of that excuse from TAS as well.

After 30mins I am told I now should know what your opinion is. Sadly I am more confused because you continually jump around with conflicting theories and opinions. Can you please read a transcript of your commentary and the edit it to be if not logical, then at least coherent. If you wrote this and gave it to uncle Harry to publish, he would reject your script and ask you to try again. We all know Harry was crazy, but at least he demanded quality in the written word.

This topology is about as worthless as there is. The speakers are huge, power hungry, lack bass, soundstage sounds huge. As an example a guitar sounds like it’s 7 foot big. A horn sounds like it’s 4 foot wide. You need a perfect room and a blind wife.

This is like an add on “how to pick up girls in a bar”, just stay on till the end and you’ll know. After the first 15 minutes, I lost interest as at this point NOTHING has been mentioned about the Magepan Sub, then a lecture on bass problems started - fine, but in another video please. Scrolled abit forth and back and learned, that “the abso!ute sound” is not for me - having several newsletters a week as tedious would kill me. Better to listen to some music. 5 minutes would have been more that sufficient.
