This edit has been on my cutting table for almost three months. I've tweaked it on and off all that time. It's what I love doing the most. Having a story to tell and making it come alive in the edit. This route, on which I took the Land Cruiser, is pretty dull. But even though I've done it so many times, this for me was an opportunity to make that too, come alive.

1. There was no spare key. 2. An electrical fault, which is now fixed, locked the doors. 3. I'm human. I now have a spare, which I mount in a secret place outside the vehicle - like I do with all my 4wds.

I expect people to respect others who are driving slower, and that death on the roads is caused by people who do not possess this respect. Sounds like you are in this group.

The limit on the N1 is actually 120km/h and the road is generally in good condition with a wide shoulder but it irks me that some drivers will travel at just below the speed limit and will do their best not to move over in the slightest to allow faster traffic to pass. In my opinion they are a real danger to other road users along that long stretch of road as the ones likely to fall asleep at the wheel.

Andrew, it is you who is demonstrating a lack of respect by dawdling along the freeway below the speed limit and refusing to make way for the flow of traffic. It is mobile chicanes like you who are a danger on the road. I guarantee the person trying to maintain the speed limit is more alert than you. Fortunately you came to your senses and got off the national road to continue your sightseeing drive on back roads with speed limits more appropriate for that purpose.

Like you I too have a fascination and like of windmills. I get so sad when I see solar panels in place of windmills in the Kruger Park at watering holes. I also have a Toyota Hilux that is 13 years young with 286,000 km on the odo. No major work ever. Just tyres, brakes and two new batteries. Still feels young and good for another 286,000 Km. Your “Finding the source of the Okavango” is your in my opinion your best work to-date. I must have watched the entire series at least three times. The fourth starts tonight👍 This series I have so enjoyed. Thank you.

As to me, dad gave me an extra key on a peace of twin when I was 15 years old and be leave it or not I still have it around my neck but with leather lanyard and I'm 76 years old . And yes over the years I have had as many as 3 keys on it but now only one . Happy trails

We stopped at the Wagon Wheel on our return from a Botswana trip a couple of years ago and went to the bar. The gentleman serving us said I looked familiar -had I been there before? I jokingly said yes, but only once and in 1976. He studied my face another moment and sadi "Yes, I was here then and I remember your face". Amazing

Nice country mate, nice drive and always go for the back roads when you can, that's the difference between having somewhere to go, you can go which way you like. having somewhere you have to be, usually not quick enough. Have a Mitsubishi Delica with the same self locking issue. Not been caught out yet but I always leave a window open or take my keys. Glad it's sorted and waiting for the next. Cheers

This is true. I stay behind trucks and SUVs until the road opens up on the N1 (between JHB and Bloemfontein). I am the one in the family with the most stone chips on my windscreen and cracks. My sister and brother do not have those in their cars. They don't drive behind a truck. So there is that. I have more windscreen tickets. They have zero solid overtake tickets so there is that as well.

Hi Andrew, great piece but one remark: if I am not mistaken first properly used 4WD motor vehicle was the Dernburg Wagen designed by Paul Daimler for the German colony (today Namibia) in 1907. They created a few prototypes from 1904. It also had 4-wheel steering. None of the cars survived to this day.

If you would allow me to criticise, I think you could have done so much more with this road trip. Okay I know you've done it many times, but for most of us, especially your international viewers, a trip like this would have been a great experience. Your negativity does not do justice to the interior of our beautiful country. Perhaps you should have a look at Voetspore's ViSA (on YT) for some inspiration.
@4xoverland
@4xoverland 4 жыл бұрын
I know Johann from Voetspore, personally. He once played one on my Discovery Channel TV shows on camera on his trip in west Africa. His presentations are for a South African audience. Mine are for a global audience. I have no pressure on me to hide my feelings about places and events. SA is a very beautiful country, as I have said many, many times, but times have changed it, and not in many good ways. I do not look forward to driving in South Africa any more. And can no longer recommend it as a destination for tourists, because it's just not safe enough. The roads are deadly, and the crime is violent, and everywhere.
@thabonchu1568
@thabonchu1568 4 жыл бұрын
@@4xoverland I very much value your reply. I am however disappointed that you feel that way and that you are now actively discouraging tourists from experiencing what is on offer here, with just your subjective view to go on.. Perhaps this 2019 report from an Australian travel advisory site will put things in perspective: "South Africa is an exciting, vibrant and dynamic country but it also has socio-economic problems, which have left the country with a high crime rate. The good news is South Africa is safe if you are sensible, do your homework and go prepared. Most areas that tourists venture to are safe and the likelihood of a tourist becoming a victim of violent crime in South Africa is low."

There is quite a big difference between Overlanding in South Africa versus simply being a tourist. Yes, it is a beautiful country to visit and as a tourist, you are able to cherry-pick the "good locations". However, that won't always be the case whilst Overlanding and you may run the risk of being hijacked or robbed (I've personally seen it happen on main roads). Having had the luxury of moving to Australia from South Africa, I actually fear the thought of Overlanding in South Africa. Also on that note, the little boys that made the windmills were talking Afrikaans to Andrew and had no idea he was a tourist. So the simple fact of "I'm a tourist", I'm safe doesn't apply. Anyhow, that's just my opinion between being a tourist and Overlanding, but I do understand your viewpoint.

@Thabo, I feel Andrew that your comments is 100% justifiable. Thabo it is better to tell the truth the whole SA is cuurently under a lie. SA has serious problems with its corrupt goverment. I am now taking a long trip to Western Cape and the thing in my head is the drivers Andrew has mentioned. It is a subject I am talking allot about seeing that its so dangerous and crime is a real issue, we not even talking about the stones that are thrown from bridges and the killing of people when stranded next to the road Oh and the corrupt cops targeting and harrasing drivers. SA is not the SA it once was very sad hey. Andrew keep telling the truth.

Andrew. As a 105 Owner i can attest to random electrical gremlins like your door lock issue. My rear wiper wont turn off and sometimes the horn will go off at night or after rain. Disconnecting the battery fixes it. I reckon its the Instrument control ECU. You could say its the character of the vehicle. Im also interested in the 79 series bull bar that was mentioned in episode 1. What mods were done to make it fit the 105. Cheers and keep the stories coming,

I think his comment about drivers not being considerate towards others is universal. My driving enjoyment is so much greater when I'm on back country dirt roads or trails with little to no traffic. People in a hurry in general cause accidents and rising car insurance premiums. Just this month a 30 car pile up with one fatality took place on hwy 401 in Canada. Of course they blamed the weather and road conditions but no mention about speed or following the car in front of you too closely. I'm sure most drivers involved think nothing could have been done to prevent it. I can understand why there is a belief that "smart" self-driving cars will substitute a driver's poor judgment though I feel that would take away a pleasurable part of the experience of driving for many.

Includes few important improvements, many Australian, like: Australian Intercooler, Snorkel, third battery service, 2nd petrol Australian deposit 160 L (total 250 l of diesel), spare wheel in the back of the 5th door, water deposit 60 L, front defenses, total metal protections under vehicle (including nylon rear skates and special painting against stones and salt), internal stainless steel drawers with telescopic colapsable separation from pasangers, etc etc. I changed friction first and only one time with 450.000 km!!! My opinion is that this is one of the best vehicles in history (if not the best...). Hope to be an interesting info for the subject of your video that I enjoy as always. Thanks!

Your the best story teller on KZbin. Great footage as well. You could have just as easily edited out the locked car but nope, you keep the adventure very interesting.

Those South African drivers sound like the ones I encounter on the state highways here in Florida. Long stretches of wide open spaces and people get impatient then do dumb things.

Spot on. Those impatient, speeding drivers you will get anywhere where great distances are involved but in my experience, the worst problem are those who insist on driving at 10 mph or so below the speed limit and will not pass or not let anyone else pass.

@@willactually7509 I was on State Highway 60 the other day, pulling a trailer, doing 5 mph over the speed limit myself, and people were tailgating just itching to fly by me. Crazy.

I agree.I have had two modern SUVs both of which can easily acheive and maintain the speed limit but time and time again people overtake me.....and then slow down

Andrew, locking my car with my key inside has always been my biggest fear. So I have developed a few habits. When I open and close gates in Africa, I always open my window. Same when I park and stay next to the car. Then, I always have a spare key on me. Breaking your window was pretty much the only solution and, gosh, it must hurt to come to that conclusion.

That was a rant for sure. There is not 3 drivers in rsa. So a wide statement for a narrow problem
