I really like Paul's "no compromise" approach and attention to detail on vehicle rebuilds. Its basically a new vehicle but meticulously gone over by Paul which must be worth even more and the way Terrain Tamer puts complete kits together is common sense. I'm not sure why they don't have this for all vehicles here in the states.

Agree - Paul has a deep wisdom of the mechanical and it shows. It's also the only approach that will work over time. However, one has to ask, how much will a good job cost and how does that compare to a newer or new vehicle purchase? Herein lays the rub - the new or newer vehicle is much more complex but that is not what is called for in an overland vehicle...complexity and reliability are not happy bed fellows. Finally that question about finding a "good" mechanic...when you don't know much about what makes a good mechanic, you have to trust your gut and that I find is easily deceived.Andrew luckily has the good mechanic and workshop, so its probably worthwhile for him. I on the other hand don't have these luxuries, so I'm looking for a low kilometer and younger specimen.

In South Africa these vehicles are ludicrously expensive because of various reasons, that's why a full rebuild will still work out financially. The average motorists can not afford to go and buy a 4 x 4 new or 2nd hand as their prices are artificially being kept inflated.
@jimbojones24575 жыл бұрын
As a Toyota mechanic, everything Paul says is absolutely true 100%. A lot of service centres overlook the smaller details causing premature wear of vital components like stub axles and CV's. It's getting harder for a lot of people to find a good mechanic that understands how to properly diagnose mechanical components. I thoroughly enjoyed this video!

One of the best mini-series you've ever done. You're going to make Paul and Joubert stars. This has been incredibly useful and enlightening, not because I'm rebuilding a 20 yr old Landcruiser but just to see how he thinks about the various issues and to hear you back and forth questions. So thrilled you decided to buy this truck. Maybe you're not but it's making for good video!

I recently rebuilt my 1959 Willys Wagon Dana/Spicer 25 front Axle and they are configured exactly the same as these on the Land Cruiser with closed knuckles, spindles and bearings. We set the preload using shims and a fish weight scale 😀. Point is you can do this work by yourself just make sure you get top class replacement parts. You'll learn a huge amount about your vehicle and it's great fun doing this work.
@philipjooste90755 жыл бұрын
Ahh, my all time favourite vehicle! I also rebuilt a couple of Dana 25s in my lifetime and I recall the shockingly poor quality of Crown replacement parts (trust they have improved since) Fortunately I managed to find a new-old-stock Willys Overland supplier for the more difficult to find parts, whereas bearings and seals are fairly standard off-the-shelf items.
@garthhayward95815 жыл бұрын
Philip Jooste Yes one has to be aware that not all replacement parts, specially bearings, races and seals, are equal. It's worth spending the few dollars more to do it once and correctly. Good to hear you're a fan of the old Willys Wagons, they were the first 4wheel drive SUV's and proved to be very popular.

If you're in the bush with a wheel bearing issue and the stub axle has been worn you can knurl the housing to get you out of a pinch. Paul could perhaps explain that too. Personally I would not reuse wheel bearings as the case hardening can start to flake off if it hasn't already. They're cheap and small enough to take a complete new kit with. Perhaps you could also show a newer one piece wheel bearing design that gets pressed in, and is a bugger to do in the field.
