The Granite Scam in Tamil Nadu unfolded in Madurai district, where numerous private granite companies emerged unexpectedly, leading to a meticulously planned scam worth Rs 16,000 crore. V. Dharmalingam, a resident of Keelavalavu in South Tamil Nadu, returned from Kuwait in 1997 to find that private granite companies were illegally mining on government land near his village. Recognizing the damage caused to his village due to unauthorized mining, Dharmalingam initiated a protest against the powerful granite mafia.
Despite sending numerous petitions to officials, chief ministers, and even the Prime Minister, Dharmalingam received no response. The turning point came in May 2012 when District Collector U Sagayam sent a confidential report exposing the Rs 16,000 crore illegal granite mining scam to the Tamil Nadu government. However, shortly after sending the report, Sagayam was transferred.
Anshul Mishra replaced Sagayam and formed 18 special teams, freezing bank accounts of major players in the illegal granite mining industry. Despite facing challenges, Mishra submitted a report estimating a Rs 10,000 crore scam to the Tamil Nadu government in 2013. However, Mishra was also transferred.
A year later, the Madras High Court reopened the case, appointing Sagayam as a special officer to investigate the granite scam. The investigation revealed that private companies, with the assistance of local officials, were illegally mining on government land meant for Dalits. TAMIN, a government company tasked with regulating mining activities, failed to prevent corruption. The state government allowed TAMIN to sublease quarries to private companies, resulting in widespread corruption.
TAMIN, citing a lack of equipment and manpower, subleased quarry operations to private companies, violating rules. The state government's failure to regulate TAMIN led to a decline in revenue and a loss of Rs 65,154.60 crore estimated by Sagayam.
In 2020, the Madras High Court declared PRP Exports owner P. R. Palanisami as the main accused in the granite scam. Durai Dayanidhi, the son of former Union Minister M. K. Azhagiri, was also implicated. The report concludes by highlighting the challenges faced by whistleblowers like Dharmalingam and honest officers like Sagayam, who continue to fight against corruption despite facing threats and transfers.

If possible could you also provide insights on Baalu/Bajri mining bans in states like Rajasthan. I don't get it even if it was banned constructions were still in full swing. The ban lasted for more than 5 years. Where was all the baalu coming from costing 10 times more than when it was legal?
