Great job. 26 years in and counting. Even deployed in an aviation Brigade, but never met a nightstalker in all my travels. They are rare, and they are true professionals based solely on the missions they are asked to perform.

when you meet three ret. old blood stalkers, a Canadian “Stormtrooper” (i doubt i gotta explain), and an even more retired ex-SS having beers in a quebec bar 🤷♂️ talk bout rare sightings indeed.

I was on the founding mission for the 160th. Jimmy Carter planned a second, much larger rescue attempt for the Hostages in Tehran. The main target, of course, was the U.S. Embassy (Delta took that) and we (Detachment A, Berlin) had the Foreign Ministry where 3 Americans were being held. Back Story: Det A Berlin (classified name: 39th SF Detachment) was a.clandestine unit in Berlin that had been doing counterterrorism in Europe for ~3 years when the embassy was overrun. Since Iran at that time was within EUCOM, we were alerted to go.and be in place in 10 days. "Delta Force" was VERY new and had yet to be certified. However Col Charlie Beckwith was friends.with Gen Meyer, Army CoS. Instead of 10 days, Beckwith needed several months to prepare. Our unit was given 2 secondary roles. 1st, since.we were the only unit in the Army with the experience, two Det.A operators.were infiltrated through Switzerland into Iran with covers as.businessmen. One was a native Scot and the other a native German. Their mission was to get target photos on the ground of both targets. 2nd, we supplied 10 assaulters to rescue the 3 diplomats in the Foreign Ministry. Beckwith's Rube Goldberg plan failed and it was back to square 1. Fast forward to October 1980. We were flown from.Berlin to Eglin AFB, FL and linked up with a task force of 21 UH6s and crews. There were no active Army UH6s so each of them had been appropriated from the National Guard, still with the State Names on them. The pilots were selected out of the 101st Airborne Divison's aviation and only had about 21 hours in these aircraft. Why UH6s? Because their rotor discs were the only ones small enough to fit in the street in front of the target. They were, at that time, under-powered, the old V-tailed model. We could have one pilot and two assaulters, or depending on the weight 3 (which mine had). When all 21 were in the air we called it the Flight of the Bumble Bees. President Carter cancelled the mission the day after his election defeat by Ronald Reagan.

How long did it take for you to make it to crew chief, sir? I am signing my contract tuesday to go in as 15U, Chinook Repairer.
@umami02472 жыл бұрын
@@marcusbyrd3074 I went straight to being a crew chief. Unit was short personal and I just happened to get lucky. Don’t think I didn’t do some maintenance shifts in the hanger cause we all did which covered everything we had in our unit. But most of the time I was on my own helicopter. From what I remember of the chithook crew chiefs it was a few years of hanger time then a apprentice program. However that depends on what they need it’s very possible they could put you on a Apache crew or Blackhawk one never knows. Base has some determination on this as well. Good luck and stay the course many things change and in the military that is a pretty rapid but you have to be flexible. You’ll have good and bad leaders you just do your job to the best of your ability and things will work out.
@umami02472 жыл бұрын
And that’s not a misspelling that’s what we called them. Chithooks. Worst riding helicopter I was ever in. I’m sure they have gotten better over the years. Only thing I ever got sick in boat plane whatever. You’ll see.
@abunchofiguanaswithinterne2186 Жыл бұрын
@@umami0247 you said base has some determination on it as well. Are you saying that being based at a certain battalion and depending on their needs allows one to become crew chief faster? If so, are there certain battalions (e.g. 1/160th at Fort Campbell) that have a higher need for Chiefs, and would one even have a choice of duty station? Thanks in advance from a 15T interested in volunteering for green platoon.

Stick with this epic music dude! Great for the gym too! Thanks for finally covering these brothers. I helped create a SOAS in my country and you talk about unsung heroes! See if you can find some clips at night, pure darkness except for the IR aiming lasers and the miniguns ripping it up. Remember it's the hours of prep that makes the 5 minutes of hollywood ninja smoke look good! It's just as cool to see the plans coming together before the DA and this style of epic tunes... makes that magic into the show. Keep it up brother, loving it!
