The question of sentience is rather complicated. Self-awareness and presence is kind of an illusion created by the same processes that create all your thoughts, and so are the emotions and feelings.

I've tried using flatpaks but i still prefer the native binaries. Flatpaks are just slower, not as bad as snaps but still noticable. If i want a slow system i'd install windows 11. I only use flatpaks if there is no native option (thanks to the AUR that is almost never)

Gnome is a joke. Took them that many years to fix a need for a user. Even MATE with Caja never had that issues. I use Arch, btw (with WM, not Gnome).

It would be smart of Framework to get a partnership with AMD for this GPU module since they support Linux with their hardware. Yeah with this GPU module they would go with the Lapop/mobile version of the GPU for this just like with what ASUS is doing with their eGPUs that use their proprietary XG Mobile eGPU which the 2023 model houses an Laptop RTX 4090. Also the Laptops that I remember that had this module style were the Past Panasonic Tough books and they had a module that had a GPU in it as well but I don't think it was hot swappable though. I am interested in the Framework laptops as well since they are releasing AMD versions of them now. I am very interested in the 16in with GPU module.

Still listening but wanted to mention something about distro/de tribalism since I briefly touched on it in my latest video. One reason I think it is the way is because people have a choice on exactly what they run. This to me makes Linux users more opinionated and passionate about their distro or de of choice. Some definitely channel that passion in less desirable ways. Gnome generally isn't the right fit for me, but I'm not going to fault people that use it. Edit: and just a few minutes later Brodie brings up something similar

@@TheLinuxEXP you guys (I happen to be a patreon of both 😅) Are contributing in a way, that was missing from FOSS for years. Easily digestible news and updates. I love it, I personally think it’s part of the reason a lot of projects get more attention these days. Leave that imposter syndrome at the door, you’re doing a great job! Heck, you guys (both of ya & the guys from Destination Linux) are the reason I took the plunge and leave Windows all together. If there’s ever going to be a “The year of Linux”, it’s because you guys made effort to promote and market it that way. Be proud of that! And i hope you guys will contribute like this for a long time, because I truly appreciate and value your journalism, interviews and opinions. Stay awesome & greetings from the Netherlands 🙂

I'm at 15 minutes and it's a great video so far. Yes, it seems like very little changed, but you will notice some rough edges when using for example 4 years old KDE. It's sort of the same like saying that Windows 10 are like Windows 7, just all black (or white), flat and ugly. Windows 10 has many little flaws here and there, like using old apps with small fonts, new apps with big fonts and font scaling is the same for both, so half of the system has too small or too big font. But in general new Windows (or KDE) are better, changes are just too subtle, but you will notice when some features are missing. EDIT: Haha, it's mentioned 30 minutes later. Not only that WinXP was ugly and not user friendly from today's perspecitve, but it was about as stable as Windows Vista when it came out. Also Windows Vista were quite ok after SP1 and quite good after SP2 and not much worse than Windows 7 (make Vista SP3, paint it blue, rename it) ... yeah, I had 4GB of RAM and Core2Duo.

you laugh about the lack of thumbnails in file picker, but also consider....how many distros use gnome? Now imagine all those new users that install a popular distro that uses gnome and then go "where are the thumbnails?" ...and then they find out that they can't find the option because it doesn't exist. Yeah, minor stuff like this is part of why Linux gets the rep it does from people that aren't in the know

pkg format matters, it interferes (positively or negatively, depends on your oppinion) with how software is designed and integrated into other projects. See how is difficult to natively package Bottles and see why gnome's new Background Apps feature only works for flatpaks.

I fully disagree. XP was great...if you started with SP2. And I still think it has better UI than 7 or 10. Aaaand 7 was good becuase it was better than 10. Just like 10 is "good" becuase it's better than 11. See where this going? It's all about "man, this new thing sucks so hard I miss the previously crappy thing". Aside from XP UI. I think that one was great

I have never understood this debate between Xorg and Wayland, Snap packs and flatpacks and why someone should actually care. Could someone, please, explain it to my pre- 'homo sapiens' brain?
@mstarOnYT
@mstarOnYT Жыл бұрын
Xorg vs Wayland is mainly because of privacy. Under Xorg every app can read everything and anything from everything and anything else currently running. Wayland brings agency over that to the user (example: apps now have to ask you for access if they want to record another app) Snap vs Flatpak is about the problems that keeping backends proprietary can cause. Take any online multiplayer game: Once the studio shuts down the servers for it, no one can play it again. And everything you achieved in it is gone too. The only reason reason some can keep going is that the community reverse-engineered everything needed. It's similar with snaps. If Canonical kills the servers for it they won't work anymore and will have to be reverse-engineered. Flatpak uses an open source backend which avoids that problem entirely as anyone could host their own flatpak backend, thus avoiding the problem of it just not working anymore if the main host dies

@@mstarOnYT XOrg vs Wayland is definetely not mainly because of privacy. Privacy is a minor additional reason, mainly no one just wants to maintain XOrg because of how ancient its codebase is, it just doesn't fit modern needs and maintaining it is a great effort that no modern young developer wants to do. Wayland is a fresh clean slate with modern tech stack that people can and want to develop and maintain. It might be hard to understand fully if you're not a developer yourself or haven't ever worked with ancient legacy codebases.
