I have been away from Durban, my home, for quite a while and for me, the unique quality of being an SA Indian is our ability to both be Western and Indian and not think about it. That gives one a real sense of being a global cosmopolitan. But fcuk, do I miss home and the bunny chows.

I worked in University of Durban-Westville for the documentation centre & it recorded the history of the the indentured labourer in South Africa 🇿🇦. It is amazing how far we have come as a people. Every Indian South African should read the Coolie Commission. I was also apart of a joint venture between Michigan State University & The University of Durban Westville. The project is called “Voices of Resistance”, which recorded some of the struggles the Indian activists faced in the apartheid era. My dad was also apart of this project because he was singer. As I said before if you can pay a visit to University of Durban-Westville, Documentation Centre. You will be beaming with pride after going there. They also have the recordings of the indenture numbers so if you have an indentured number of a family member you can trace the year they came into the country, the family members they came with, the port they left from & which estate employed them. Love the episode Sam 😊. Pink looks good on you as well 😉😉

I think the Indian immigration in Mauritius and South Africa are similar. The first time I went to South Africa, a professor asked me if I am related to some Naidoo minister in South Africa. My family name is 'Daiboo' and I think it sounds similar to the Telugu 'Naidoo' that we also have in Mauritius.

Yes, but South Africa is different from South Africa. In South Africa are indians a minority. In Mauritius, indians are the majorty of the people. Mauritus is actually the only country in Africa there indians are the majority of the people.

Indians came to work for white people in the sugar cane farms, when they arrive in South Africa and they were slavery of the white until another group of Indians arrived in South Africa that was educated and have business skills, which changes the labour slavery to businesses, this group of Indians open many shops and started to negotiate with white government and they were allowed to trade in black community and coloured areas community and in their community during apartheid, and they became second citizens after white people in terms of the standard of living, the apartheid government invested hugely in the Indians community during apartheid. I can mentioned infrastructure, school and properties. In South Africa Indians are a minority group you most found lots of Indians in Durban.

It’s sad how the British did that to your Indian ancestors aswell as Africans and I never knew this information until I was watching a movie and saw Indians in South Africa and it made be curious to learn the diversity of South Africa. The British and white people also enslaved Indians into slavery to the Caribbeans and had them working the sugar canes there too. Hopefully this ugly part of history never repeat itself and they will have to answer to the most high for their actions. ❤️‍🩹

My mother in law went to the South of India and met up with her dad's people. Her cousins gave her a warm welcome, and later, her youngest brother went and met up with all the families. He was shown his father's inheritance, a part of land. But he died before laying claim to it. No one from the Chetty family has ever laid claim to any properties in India of which they were entitled to. These were very large farms belonging to the generation of families.

I always thought of the Chettys as a historically business / entrepreneurial community. So I would have guessed that they, like the Gujaratis and Marwaris, would have made their way to Africa in search of businesses opportunities rather than going as indentured servants. Can someone shed some light on this?
