Hi Stephen. That is going to be a beautiful ornament. Can you tell me what solution you applied right after you finished your sanding?
@StephenOgle4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mark. Yes I used Sanding sealer. It doesn't matter what brand but I used DEFT lacquer based sanding sealer. I hope this helps.

What finish did you use? Saw an amber liquid but you didn't say what it was. Went back with CC to see if I missed something. Nice; flame box elder is my wife's favorite wood. Thanks for the video.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed this project. The amber liquid was DEFT Lacquer based sanding sealer just for prepping the surface. I finished the pieces with Gloss Lacquer. I hope this helps and have a Merry Christmas.

Those look awesome Stephen!! Nice work. How is the lathe performing? You have had it a while, curious how it is holding up. I am looking to purchase a new lathe first of the year, considering a Grizzly.
@StephenOgle4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jeff. Glad you enjoyed this project. The G0766 is holding up fantastic. No problems in the first two years. I have not even replaced the belt. Strong, Smooth running and Quiet. Hope this helps.

Can you explain how to do the glue up mounts for the balls?
@StephenOgle3 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir and good question. I use my glue blocks over and over again. They start as a piece of scrap and I turn them to about 2 inch dia. and true the face dead flat and slightly concave the very center. I then use wood glue between the block and the blank with good tailstock pressure. Then I will use hot glue around the joint to hold everything together. That way I can take it off the lathe and set up for the next. Allow at least over night for the glue to cure. I hope this helps. I may try to cover this in another video. Take care.

Looks awesome. How long does it take to make one.
@StephenOgle4 жыл бұрын
Thank you James. I usually do not make them individually but you could complete a single project within a couple of hours from blank prep to glue up. I hope this helps. Take care.

Which carbide shaping tools do you use?
@StephenOgle4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Peter. I use a round carbide cutter just smaller than 3/4ths inch on a 1/2" mild steel bar that I bent and shaped to hold the cutter. I hope this helps.
@fierceflyer54 жыл бұрын
Stephen, when hollowing where is your tool, Center, above center or below center?
@StephenOgle4 жыл бұрын
Thank you and good question. I use the carbide scraper on the center and with a slight downward tilt of the cutter for a negative rake. I hope this helps.
@fierceflyer54 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stephen, you helped a lot, I appreciate your answer.

Stephen what glue do you use, glue block to ornament?
@StephenOgle4 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir. I glue the blanks with Titebond II. I also cut a chamfer onto the glue block and fill that with hot glue. I hope this helps.
@woodrat19524 жыл бұрын
@@StephenOgle, I Thought it looked like hot glue on the outside. Thanks for the reply!
