I started this project and found the Flaming Box Elder blank to be very soft and full of bug holes. I decided to keep the holes and developed a naturally pierced bowl.

Thank you very much. So glad to have you back. I took a break an Retired from my job, hence the beard. Firefighters are not allowed to have them for obvious reasons so that was my first goal after retirement. I have never stopped doing my videos but the channel has changed a little. That was really good to see the other angle of the shear cut at about 10:00, thanks for that. You can see that you're on the bevel, just like you said, but also showed the really steep, almost vertical, angle of the tool. Great to see. (Also the ooopsie! glad I'm not the only one who does that every so often...) Thanks Stephen.

Thank you Daryl. I have been using this method with different products for years. Sanding sealer is not required but seems to work best. I have used Tung Oil and Polyurethane with good results also. The idea is to just stiffen the fibers enough to cut. Glad you enjoyed this project my friend. Take care.

Good luck selling at the craft show. I tell you that my customers are wanting vases made from weathered sun bleached driftwood. I just make sure to leave some of the weathered and the rest smooth with a light sheen. BLO for the rustic areas. Drill a 1 1/2" hole 6" deep for dry flowers.

Love the natural wormhole look on that box elder. Great choice of finish. I've learned to only use a water-based finish on colored and spalted wood. Oil-based finishes ruin the natural colors and they turn very yellow over time.

Thank you Ben. Glad you enjoyed this project. Spraying would have been much easier to use even from a rattle can. I just am not set up to spray Polycrylic and did not have the rattle can available either. As far as an Air Brush, I believe you could do it, if it was thinned correctly, but you should be quick because you need the wet edge and this stuff cures pretty fast. Hi Stephen! Always great to watch you work. Good tips on the Polycrylic for finishing. The area that I live in SW Ontario, we have a lot of Box Elder (or Manitoba Maple as we call it in Canada). Being able to enhance the red colour is always a bonus. I find that over time, the red turns brown, which is OK I guess but not quite as attractive. Do you know if there is a product for finishing that has a higher UV stabler that will slow down the colour change? Always appreciate your videos, and your personal style makes your projects easy to understand whether it is a wooden bowl or a great smoker! Thanks for sharing. Thank you Dennis. I am glad you said something about the color changing over time. I think I would maybe give a try to a good Spar Varnish. They designed for marine use and usually have some UV protection. May be worth a try. All the best to you and your family also my friend. Take care.

I'm fairly new to lathe work and I've struggled with what to do about bug holes. Do I plug them or leave them? Contrast or match? Clean the "digested wood" out or solidify it wIth thin CA glue?

Thank you Loren. Glad you enjoyed this project. To fill or not to fill. I normally fill the holes with some filler such as sawdust, or coffee grinds and CA glue. Sometimes I will use dyed epoxy. Truth is, there really is no answer, It is all up to you. Wish I could be more help on this subject. Just follow your instincts for what you think will look good. Take care.
