Peter it shows what damage leakage caps can do I have heard of stuff called contact paint that you can cover printed circuit tracts, I did notice as the crystal was heating up the Sin od was improving it is amazing what leakage caps can do well done for another great repair the PCB was in a great mess with the acid very much corrosive and just eats the copper away!

Thanks for doing this video. After watching it I decided to replace all of the electrolytic capacitors on both boards. The only leakage I found was underneath the 470uF capacitor on the display board. Fortunately it had only leaked a small amount and not yet eaten through the copper trace. I was able to clean the board and re tin the trace. If I hadn't watched your video and decided to replace the capacitors I would have had my radio fail before very much longer and the repairs would have been much more difficult.

Hi Peter you did this repair (#75 Dec 15, 2015), having looked at it again the board number are the same. The only thing I see is the date codes on the Kenwood IC are a year apart, IE: 9031 & 9140. I guess if you have not heard from the old man on that repair, then what you are doing solves the problem. Great repair as always i'm sure you will see this repair in your future again, *_Cheers_* *73*

Doing so much more of this lately. Leaky caps are really starting to become a major problem. I tell people it's better to replace all the electrolytic capacitors early before any damage happens. Better than doing it to late and your radio becoming a nice looking bookend. When I do these repairs I reapply PCB overcoat to the traces. Circuit Works makes a 2 part epoxy that is green for this. This is a really good high temp epoxy once fully cured and also works well to bond traces to the board if you ever have to replace a whole trace. You can also get UV light cured overcoat. I recently got a small tub of that and have had good luck with it so far.

I´ve done the same, I repaired all through connections with thin wire because the acid had eat the edges away. Furthermore, I have replaced all SMD electrolytic capacitors with wired ones. Because I had no others at hand. If that was correct? I do not know. But the Kenwood has been working with it for 3 years now. If it continues like this, it can not have been wrong ;-) 73´s Bernd

I've done some research on how to clean PCB's and I've seen several references to using an ultrasonic cleaner with some distilled water and maybe even a light detergent as a possible solution. Some of the pinball arcade guys seem to advocate putting PCB's into the dishwasher which seems odd; I don't know that I'd want to try that myself. I'm still researching as it would be nice to know the best way to clean these corroded boards. I seems like with enough information, a schematic, and board layout, it might be possible to get a completely new LO board manufactured.
@TRXLab
@TRXLab 6 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right for boards like this ultra sonic cleaner is a real advantage. Unfortunately we can not use it on all pcb as we can easily destroy a pcb with filter cans on it but for this local board it would be the best even I have already used soda lye to neutralize the acid. Thanks for watching my friend 73

If I wanted to replace my electrolytic capacitors on my TS850's CAR board, can I use something that will not leak in the future? Tantalum perhaps? Hybrid polymer? Hi there Peter again. I wonder how many good radios have become scrap due to the same problem with leaking electrolytic caps. I know you can expect this from realy old radios that changing the caps and noisy resistors is part of the game. Surely though why would so many caps leak/ go faulty on a fairly modern type of radio ?. Would it have been a faulty batch in production ?. I would hate to think I had payed out good cash to find this happen to a piece of my gear. Thank's for another very interesting video of the repair, well done. 73 de John - G0WXU.

At what age should you replace all the caps in a transceiver for good measure to prevent leakage?
@TRXLab
@TRXLab 6 жыл бұрын
That is not easy to answer as there are so many different capacitor qualities out there. As rule of thump you can say as more professional electronic gear is as better are the components. For example if you see test gear from HP or R&S and what have we see that caps will last for decades. On the other hand cheap consumer electronics from China only a year. For our radios you should check at latest after ten years and should at latest swap out after 30 years but only if you found no issue before..
