Tried going over an old painting myself the other day. Came out better than some of my recent work. Very nice to see your work.

I think the painting's luminous, maybe because of the strong contrast? The 2nd painting is fantastic, love how abstract it is. Bravo!

I like both paintings. The size and proportion of the boards look great for the subject.

I love your free style when painting and enjoy the Bay Area views. Being born and raised in Alameda it brings me back to see those locations.

I like both but with the second one you were warmed up and under time crunch and the spontaneity really worked. ❤

I always learn something good. I finally did a nicely loose painting this week. Client loved it.

Your show looks fabulous as usual …the cypresses at baker beach is my favorite one in it this time. Hard to pick favorites with you though! Wish I could see it in person…one day I’ll get back out there!

I would love to see the show in person. It is a great body of work! I really love the fishermen paintings.

I like these a lot. It's inspiring to see you keep finding new ideas. I recognize Pescadero, and also the feel of the Coast weather that got into these paintings. Remember how, a couple of years ago, you gave patrons one of your old pictures after a year? If you decide you want to paint over these experiments, I'm just saying some people really, really want them.

Beautiful paintings, Michael!!!! I love using older paintings to work off from too. Adds great texture and shadows, I think.

I really like them both. I’m fascinated that you are able to not overwork them. I tend to put every whisker on the cat. Maybe I should use one of your paintings as a master painting to see how you do it. By the way, I occasionally dig an old painting out of my Closet of Horrors, but I paint over it black. Covers completely, but is usually lumpy even if I sanded it, and I find that is a help as I need to include the lumpiness in the new painting. It usually works out well. Usually 😅

Good morning Michael, looks great! Even though it’s 16 x 20, it somehow looks smaller. Good luck with your show! I wish I could see it in person. At least I have the postcard 😁

Hi Michael. I came across your channel around a year ago, initially from a search for preparing and using boards as opposed to canvases. Really enjoy the channel and have learnt so much, particularly around composition and layering the painting. You seem to mix paints to gain the right colour quite effortlessly, and I would be intrigued to understand how you achieve this. I spend more time mixing to get the right paint than actually painting. W

loved how you transformed an old canvas here. can you recommend any artists who paint PNW landscapes?

What made you decide to use an old painting? This was magical to me…. lol It was confusing and then just changed and now I can’t even remember what was there before. Thank you, that was cool. 😎

I often paint over old paintings so as not to waste a panel 😊

Congratulations on your show! That must be nerve-wracking, but also really satisfying. I hope it's fabulous all around in all the ways that matter to you! I live far away, can't go, but send the best energy for that to go amazingly. Thanks for this video and discussing the challenges of over- painting. The results looked great, but it's you as the artist that gets to make that call.

The best was the prior painting you painted over (folks would buy that one…as it had nice form, pleasant composition, and good use of color throughout). 2nd best was the loose composition painting at the end, (because the addition of the left wave and distant sky brought clarity to the scene) Third best was the painting of the rocks in this session (because the rocks were vague and the scene vague…no real distinguishing features to clarify what the scene was). Sunlight wasn’t your friend in this session…🙂
