Hey, guys I love your videos. I'm a native born American who grew up in Oklahoma and I've lived in the Northeast, Ohio, and now CA. The "H " in herb is not pronounced because it's originally a French word. The British at some point chose to Anglicize its pronunciation to include the H. They have a lot more contentious history with the French than we do. The French were very important in helping us win the final battle of the American Revolutionary War from the Brits. Though, I realize some Americans say it with the H, but it's not that common. The word "suite", meaning a room is also of French origin, that's why it's pronounced the same as the English word sweet. Foreign language speakers don't have to worry about how to pronounce every foreign word exactly right, such as Quinoa and Acai. I don't know how to type accents on my keyboard so I left them off of Acai. If these products are prepackaged in boxes, cans, or frozen plastic bags then they will usually tell you how to pronounce these words on the packaging. Americans have to learn how to pronounce these words too. The main thing is that you can understand what you are hearing, as well as being understood yourselves. That's why it can help to have a fluent speaker travel with you. Finally, it's pronounced "All-mond" like the word always is pronounced "Allways". However, English pronunciation can be very irregular, so it's good to just listen to how the words are pronounced where you are. Ok, happy learning and happy travels to all the foreign language learners out there! All the Best!

its really good to see how they make mistakes and don't feel ashamed for it at all!! that's the spirit, if you wanna learn English, you have to acknowledge that you are going to make mistakes just like everyone else does! i loved the video guys, good job.

Acai sounds like asai because it’s originally a Brazilian word which is spelled with a Ç (AÇAÍ) and in Portuguese the Ç sounds exactly like S. As there’s no Ç in the American alphabet the C was kept and it’s made people mispronounce the name

actually in British English you don't tend to pronounce the 'l' in salmon either, as well as many British English speakers say the version of 'schedule' that you called American.
@DjJtown7 жыл бұрын
It depends on your age, the location in the UK where you were raised and how much exposure youve had to American language. I've caught myself pronouncing schedule and chassis like they do in the UK just because I've been such a big fan of British TV shows over the years like Dr Who (All time favorite TV series), Singled Out, The 2 Ronnies, Monty Python, Kenny Evert Video Hour, Top Gear and I could list at least 10 more.

Nice video. Honestly, you all speak English well enough, and you all pronounced all of the words in a manner that will be understood. I was surprised the Ukranian woman said people don't understand her when she says "cocoa". Tons of people mispronounce "quinoa" and "acai". Heck, I just intentionally misspelled acai because I don't want to type odd letters. If you have to choose between learning a new word and pronouncing "salmon" correctly, you should learn the new word.

Xylem Fielding I think it’s more of the fact that in North America is more well known as ‘hot chocolate’ instead of ‘cocoa’
@TBeermonster7 жыл бұрын
heather boettcher nor sure about the US but in the UK hot chocolate and cocoa aren't quite the same thing. Hot chocolate already contains sugar and vanilla at a minimum. Cocoa needs them adding either during making the drink or at the table.

I agree people will understand you if you mispronounce salmon but it’s better to know the correct way when you learn words and you can totally learn words and say them correctly. It helps the overall impression and yes, sometimes people do not understand what we, foreigners say if we mispronounce words.

In New Orleans, we have a Mardi Gras parade which we pronounce : "Herm eez". However, we also know the difference between the French produces "Made by Hermes" as "er may". The South uses a lot of r's in their words. We say "water" as "war-ter". Confusing?

This is so funny, because the original word is from Brazilian Portuguese (my mother tongue) and it's spelled *açaí* with this *ç* letter and the diacritic as well, which means it's an oxytone (stress on the last syllable, in this case being the letter *i* itself); the ç letter is just like "ss" in English, so yes, the pronunciation is exactly like that! ^^

If you are learning english, Definitely don't be embarrassed if someone corrects you... We pick and choose which rules we use from which language so unless you know the origin of the word it's pretty hard to pronounce everything correctly. Also I don't say it (Gay Lah), I say it how you said it first. Like the Met Gala in new york I pronounce (met Gal uh).

The GOOD of English: There are so many people who speak it who do not have English as their native language most Americans can understand just about any word mis-pronunciation or any abnormal sentence structure. Some languages, like Japanese, for instance..if you mis-pronounce a word..they just stare at you in shock and think you're a real dummy.
