In 1989, a few of my Navy friends and I designed and oversaw the running of the first ever T&D road rally on Terceira for the Navy Relief charity. We conceived a course that would expose the contesting driver/navigator teams to the island's incredible beauty, from the central highlands where the bulls for the street 'bullfights' and running of the bulls are selected to the lovely and historic cities of Praia and Angra, with optional stops at lovely seaside eateries, swimming holes and at some of the most stunningly and vividly verdant scenic overlooks you could ever hope to see. We wanted lots of our military friends stationed there like us to see the island from the perspective of its native population, and so our rally was a smashing success. That was my most culturally fulfilling and educational tour during my 20 year Navy career, and I wish every single one of you reading this could get the chance to go and enjoy it. Bon voyage.

Hi, I just saw your video. The editing is fantastic, the drone work is phenomenal. I see that our famous bulls were missing from your video. I say this because they are my passion here on my island and that's why I spend a few hours of my time with them, recording the work with the respective owners of these beautiful animals. Too bad I can't spend more time editing my videos, it's all so fast due to my work. Your edition is magnificent. Congratulations and don't forget to visit the other islands, each with its different charm. A big hug. Stay safe.

I lived there for 11 years and my brother was born there. Haven’t been there since I left in 1987, and am not surprised it looks almost exactly as I remember. Keep telling my kids they only way they will understand me is when I take them there.

Yes, my family lived there in early 60's. Terceira has changed. Tourist economy began to significantly grow by 2000's, thanks to Internet. No one is poor now! I took our children there in early 2020's. You have a wonderful perception! Our children began to understand me more. Afterwards, they presented me a beautiful painting of the island! A wonderful place always.

I love your enthusiasm. It's a hidden gem. I last had Alcatra, my favorite food there in '72. Until you share life with locals, you have no idea what this island is. For instance, there are miles of underground tunnels. You barely scratched the surface.

What tunnels? Going there next week and I'm Interested in visiting some
@MarkH102 жыл бұрын
@@rubenrusso7586 On the satellite map you will see a Lava flow to the sea at Bisquoitos, on Terceira. Whenever you see lava flowing you have the makings of underground stone lined tunnels. Forgive me if I do not recall where the tunnels are, I just recall that we walked for at least a mile, and there was a water trough built in as the tunnel had so much water flowing in it. Please ask locals about it. I was last on the island when I was 12, and that was 01/03/1973. I just searched "Terceira, Azores tunnel" and there are several photos. Keep in mind what I said, Lava flows will cool from the outside in, so the phenomenon produces tunnels quite often, because the molten lava still flows out the bottom of the flow. Janelo do Inferno. I hope you have a great time on Terceira.

I was stationed at Lajes Field from 87-89, when I first arrived I was like who did I piss off to get stuck on this Freakin Island but I quickly learned that it was Soooooo much more than that. I lived in town about 10 minutes from the base close to the beach. I could look out of my second story window to the left and see it. Right before you get to the base was a Bakery that was THE Bomb, my favorite breakfast was the Coconut Bread. Obviously I feel In Love with this Place! Wanted to go and live there for the rest of my life but circumstances didn't allow that.

I was stationed there from 75-76. The most laid back place on earth. Weekly bull fights in the streets, the dark dry island wine "vinche", and the language is beautiful. The people were great. I still have dreams of Lajes and that was 45 years ago.

@@smallcrazyhawaian malasadas are also from Azores (from S. Miguel, but there are different versions with different names in Terceira and other islands). Also some ways of preparing fish and meat (marinated in wine), sausages, etc. Also music (the ukulele is their version of the portuguese cavaquinho). Some influences are also from the portuguese mainland and maybe Madeira.
