I had a Chinese Evergreen that I moved from job to job for many years. Maybe there's different varieties, but mine was pretty much one color green until I got to where it could get natural light. What most of these plants have in common is they are tropical species that tend to grow in on the forest floor, and are very shade tolerant. However, did you notice in the photos that most of the plants were in bright indirect light? That is what a forest floor tends to be. If you keep any green plant someplace with not windows, many of these will hang on for a time, but what this really becomes about is that they just die more slowly. All plants need light. The Venus flytrap has no business on this list whatsoever. It shouldn't be in the house at all, and is a full-sun perennial. They need about the same amount of sun as a tomato plant. If you keep them indoors in a low light location, they will die quickly.

If your friend has pets or may have pets in the future or if any pets visit your friend's home, please make sure you check Veteranians lists that list toxic and poisonous plants that animals can not be around. For example, I wanted to get a ZZ plant but this is what I found out about it: All parts of the ZZ plant are poisonous. If chewed or swallowed symptoms can cause immediate pain or a burning sensation and swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat. Contact dermatitis may also occur in sensitive individuals.

I like cordyline plants. They are very colorful and full. I keep them outdoors all summer and then bring them into the den during the winter. They brighten the house and manage to hold up fairly well in my moderately lit den. Then in spring I cut the taller plants back and let they recover outside for the next winter. I do have a large pair of peace lilies that have been in my den for over a decade. They don't need bright light but do need frequent fertilization to do well and stay full and glossy. Many of the plants suggested in the article are okay but actually do require more light or they will quickly get tall and leggy dropping many of their leaves over time.

I noticed you had a carnivorous plant in the list, specifically the venus fly trap. I wouldn't consider it a best low light houseplant, because it does thrive better outdoors and bathing in the sun. However, pitcher plants on the other hand are likely to survive much longer in a low light situation, it's also a carnivorous plant. Venus fly traps can survive indoors with minimal maintenance, but they will die quickly. So, for those interested in growing carnivorous plants, I'd suggest pitcher plants AKA nepenthes. P.S. for those interested in carnivorous plants, they do require distilled water, collected rain water or reverse osmosis water. They thrive on acidic and low nutrient soils, that's why they prefer the types of water previously mentioned. Enjoy your growing babies! Stay safe everyone!
@KandyKoRnKorpse2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love Venus Flytraps! I have bought several of them but I killed every single one of them in less than a week. I eventually gave up. I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. I tried everything... lots of sun, partial sun, shade, lots of water, little water, no water, fertilizer, no fertilizer, outside and inside. Appearantly I wasn't doing everything right at the same time. I watered them with my well water and now I am wondering if that is what kept doing it?
@metalsplash3102 жыл бұрын
Venus flytraps need sphagnum moss or another type of carnivorous plant soil because normal soil has too much nutrients, they're soil should be drenched in distilled water or rain water because normal water has too much nutrients(this can be accomplished by letting there pot that has holes at the bottom sit in a bowl of distilled or rain water, they need lots of light, they also need to be put outside for at least 3 months during winter so they can enter winter dormancy. You can also probably keep them outside all year unless you live in someplace tropical or somewhere that gets below 0 degrees (Fahrenheit). You can also kill them by overfeeding them, they will probably catch they're own bugs, but if you want to you can feed them when all or most of they're traps are open, also only feed them live bugs. Venus flytraps are native to North and South Carolina.

Such misconception and misleading impression of these plants require low to zero sunlight to survive is absolutely one of the most untrue and irresponsible things to say which lead to some getting frustrated and disappointed when in reality it's totally not the same as said. There is no plants in the world, well mostly if not all I can't say for sure, that do not require certain amount of sunlight to survive, it's the source of photosynthesis that makes food to feed and live. The indoor light is never the same and trust me, after a while your plants would start to look miserable and depressing from the lack of natural light and air. Also the low light saying is very vague as it doesn't give anyone an actual clear idea as how low is low or not too low. For example, if one were to say it's best with light condition outside at around 7 to 8 am, well that timing gives extremely different level of lights to person A in Malaysia as to person B in Sweden, and that time during month of November is equally different too, so the understanding to low light differs to individuals with factors such as location, time, reason, weather, climate, season, etc.... I hope people would benefit from what I have to say as I if to Figure out things

I was once told that Mother in law tongue (UK) Snake plant (US) makes so much oxygen that if you were buried alive with just 6 of them, youd not suffocate. That's so cool.

From experience, I know that the diffenbachia needs medium to bright light. Cannot survive in an ill lit room. Mine recovered afrer I placed it out in some sunlight..

This video is not true. I have owned half of these plants and from experience growing them. Plus the card included on the care of the plant. Several of them actually require High light levels. People please always read the label on the pot for care requirements before buying.😆

@@ThatsMary then do better research. Or learn from experience before you give advice. 🤷🏽♀️
@dragonflyy0004 жыл бұрын
@@arieldenning8719 Are you a plant expert?? Not many of us are. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but that comment across rather disrespectful. As she stated she's no expert, was just trying to help. For instance, You can look up one plant- read the care card with it, then research it online, and get 10 different results. Its all by trial and error, and our own experimentation, to find the right spot in our own homes to see where our green babies acclimate the best.

I have several plants mostly air and succulents. Many I put in one container to give a three dy look. I needed a plant for a corner. After watching this video I'm going for the prayer plant.

Zero light? Yeah, some plants might live that way, but they won’t flourish or be happy. I rotate the low light plants I have every 6 weeks or so, so that none of them is condemned to a lifetime of darkness

My Peace Lily is very temperamental. She’s been sucking up water but her tips have been brown lately. I’ve not been over watering cause I’ll wait til she gets a little limp. Maybe she needs even more water?!
@grandmajane25936 ай бұрын
@@auroraborealis13579 - Maybe she''s outgrowing her pot and needs more dirt around her roots. I had one and I had to be repotting it constantly, until it finally got to big for me to handle and I gave it away.-(edit - just noticed your post was 3 yrs ago) sorry .

I have plants that are offshoots from my Mother's plants I've had since the 1960's that are well and thriving..I add dirt to the soil each spring and have transplanted into bigger pots. I love big plants and have put several smaller ones into a big pot that look beautiful. I fertilize them monthy in summer with a Weak solution and set most out o the deck and bring them back in when the weather cools....

Calathea is the hardest plant to grow! They’re beautiful in the beginning then you get curly brown leaves for no reason other than they’re very temperamental😆
@vijayam164 жыл бұрын
This is because of dryness in the air or heat. Keep them away from sunny spots and away from the windows in the house. They love humidity. Misting the leaves will also help.
