It honestly doesn't matter what camera you use...for real. Most of my gear is inexpensive and what I could afford. High quality cameras are great if you can afford them but far too often people miss what should be the main focal point: the content. Having high quality video without a story to tell, or a good message is pointless. I've seen successful KZbinrs with $200 cameras.

" Setting the scene" That's my problem with my last video, I and the scene look like crap. I have to build more of what I built in that video so I am going to redo it with different clothing on and in a different place. Delete the old and upload the new. For showing energy on camera, my suggestion is to make the camera your imaginary friend. Imaginary friends are always excited to hear anything you have to say, so you won't be afraid to say it! Consistency - I am in the gardening and homesteading community. Any reporting on outdoor activity I feel is time sensitive which makes things inconsistent. I try to make two videos per week but don't promise that or on which day because of that and that I don't trust my health enough to say that will be possible. oh! and thanks for saying that some of us have to actually work at being successful! I hate it when someone says "I did it so anyone can!"

The biggest problem for me is when folks play music and speak - all at same level. I simply can NOT hear anything but noise .. Also, as Im 156 cm tall, my daily life is to look UP .. into peoples noses, not a pleasant sight. Many youtubers set their camera so we see right into their nostils, DONT ! Heyy Gillian, I understand what you're saying and why buttttt I do think that this video could very easily put people off their video making dreams. I just watched a Think Media video on a similar topic and in it the guy said that it doesn't matter at what level you are, you should START MAKING VIDEOS, even if they're no good - get yourself out there ! I resonated soooo much more with his advice, it felt much more real. In some points your advice is a bit too harsh for new KZbinrs. If they're NEW KZbinrs where are they going to have the skills to edit perfect videos and amazing content (which you said they should have) unless they start by making mistakes and crap content ? Excellent video! You asked for people to mention something they didn't like. I have a peeve about women who have a hair-style that basically requires them to manually move their hair about every 3 minutes. I suggest - stick it behind your ear to stay, or use some kind of hair-comb or barrette to keep it where you really want it.

One thing I've noticed content creators do that is often a turn off after becoming interested in their channel and subscribing is always playing the same background music, although I'm sure for some the consistency is enjoyable. I'm wondering if it's a music copyright issue where they just don't wanna search for different music that isn't copyrighted or maybe there's some other reason for this music or background sound consistency. The volume thing is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. My volume runs pretty low because I still don’t know what I’m doing with sound editing lol but I ALWAYS make sure that everything is the same level. It’s probably the biggest turn-off when I find a new channel tbh

I do comedy and voice impression videos, which is kind of hard to be original in I feel because there are sooooo many KZbinrs that do voice impressions lol. Great video. I saved this one in my folder for future referenced to go back and look at again and again. Great information and I have discovered that this kind of video is a good thing to watch when you start making videos, and then again as a refresher about every 2 to 3 months. Each time you listen to it you will focus automatically on different parts of the video and as you get good at one thing, like thumbnails, you will notice that you need to refocus on something else next to continually keep improving. KZbin is definitely an adventure and a process. No one gets there overnight. Gilliam, I am a huge fan and have been watching you since almost the beginning of my channel which I started in May of 2018. You have been one of the many voices I have listened to over and over to improve my skills on KZbin, but I also have really enjoyed watching your content. I have found your day-in-the-life videos useful and helpful as well as an avenue to get to know and understand you better. What I have learned about you is that you are an amazing person and are the kind of person I would love to be friends with. My channel is about how to play Minecraft which is something I love to play with my son. The interesting part is that I am 51 years old (my son is 15) and I have found that my audience is (according to KZbin) is older than you would think. 76% of my watch time comes from people over 45. My video that I am most proud of is one (that I just realized today when looking for it) has a horrible title which is "skycade skyblock auto sell chest". It makes sense once you see the video but I think I will have to come up with a better title.

Gillian, the biggest mistake that I observe by both new and established KZbinrs is the fact that they have no system in place to convert KZbin subscribers into email subscribers. A person's KZbin channel can be shut down at a moment's notice for the smallest infraction of KZbins community guidelines. If a channel is shut down, years of work, money and thousands of subscribers are lost and the KZbinr is out of business and all income gone. If a KZbinr builds an email list and their channel is shut down, they are still in business and income in tact. A KZbin channel should be viewed as an advertising source as opposed to a business in a box.

My channel is beauty related and that niche is heavily saturated by much younger women than myself. Thanks Gillian, always great and useful tips from you. I just started my KZbin channel and I know that I've a long way to go. My channel is about how to create comic books/manga. I'm working on my graphic novel and on my channel I share everything I know to create a comic book and at the same time promote my comic. It's not easy, and I'm not consistent yet but I really want to make it. At the moment I'm using my IPHONE and iMovie, nothing fancy, I don't have KZbin money yet. LOL

Hi Gillian, thanks for these insights, really useful. I've been growing my channel for about 30 months (car maintenance how to's) now and reckon I've made all these mistakes at some point and am still doing a couple (the competing description thingy stuck out). I'd add an 18th [hole, lol] to the list - not being open to [constructive] criticism or feedback. This could mean being self aware enough to yell "yes, that's me" at the screen when watching videos like yours or just taking in what friends suggest. Especially be prepared to acknowledge suggestions that come from those viewers who are kind enough to take the time to make suggestions. I've only just discovered you, but I'm liking the way you present your insights. New sub here.

Great video, you hit all the points I needed to hear. I've had my channel for a while, but have just this week committed to doing 2 videos per week.
