It's good that these channels are remaining independent and not being paid by manufacturers for positive reviews. It's surprising there isn't more 'payola' happening to generate more hype around certain products. Maybe it's because there are so many more channels doing reviews? When I got started you had to rely on reviews in Keyboard or Electronic Musician. Much better today.

I have the Soundcraft 22 mtk, and it has changed my life! imagine never unplugging and rerouting synths because they mostly all fit on your mix. there is a known overheating bug with this, but after a year I've never seen it. but it seems to come to those who are used to leaving their mixers on for a week or never shutting it off. apparently, that was normal in the 90s ish era and older. but I just turn mine off when not using it and it's fine. I also agree about Maschine, I've tried explaining this to friends, but it doesn't quite get understood how good their organization game is in Maschine. it makes it really easy to find things and just play around. you always make something kind of neat with a small amount of experience.

Dawless is a challenge. I have been doing that with the akai force and while it offers many outstanding features getting use to the workflow of using its arranger to complete songs has definitely been interesting. I can’t say that it fully mimics Ableton workflow but it does a good job and it is close to it. I still complete songs faster in Ableton but find that having access to a dawless setup has pushed me into limitations which have forced me to use more creative ways to make simple things. Great Q&A video :) My two cents: 02:43 I find the MC-707 not so bad at creating arrangements. It has a pretty decent flexibility to organize clips with Scenes and Clip chaining - the LCD screen helps. Conversely I find it much more painful to do that with the very popular KeyStep Pro (if we were to compare their sequencing capabilities). 03:10 Presonus ARc12c is an USB Audio interface capable analog mixer that can be used to record multitrack on a computer via USB, and can also record on an SD card (but only the 2ch Main Mix).

I agree with Maschine and preset integration. As long as it's NI Expansions, it is an experience second to none. And that is my only gripe with my Maschine+ in stand alone; I have to spend time tagging everything of my own because of how NI set up browsing the User area of the SD card. It's not tragic, but I do wish it had Akai's level of integration regarding 3rd party expansions; installed right along with them and browsable just as easily. All that said, there's a lot of great sounds from NI and Expansion sales happen regularly enough that building a large library of them isn't too hard on the bank account. I actually kept a list/spreadsheet of what came with each version of Komplete, Maschine, and what I was going to purchase with the $9/99 off, all the vouchers NI was giving out for the Plus, etc lol. I managed to not overlap much at all and made out like a bandit... Lol the recorder, they make you do that in Sweden, too? I remember getting a recorder for music class XD My first hardware box was a DX-200 I bought used for less than $200. My longest eurorack patch was one that stayed patched for at least over a year because I was not using my gear at all. I don't think that counts lol... As far as synth elitism, it seems a lot smaller than in the guitar community, in my experience. I've encountered more massive egos among guitarists than synthesists, overall >_> thanks for sharing.

Two questions: 1 - When you cover multi-tracking using mixers does that impose down mixing into a single bus pair when recording or are you recording stereo pairs per voice? I ask because post production on the bus mix is a real pain as opposed to tweaking the mix of the various stereo pairs. 2 - Have you tried using a Pyramid for managing the arranging of a group of synths? I have built a setup around a Pyramid and find it incredibly helpful for setting up arrangements and recording them in live takes. Followup... would that be something useful for people to see? I have seen a few synth KZbinrs struggle with it and wonder if it might help to share how to leverage it.

@@BoBeats the Pyramid is pricey to try and has a weird learning curve, but it is extremely flexible and very customizable. Given the hardware you have you definitely don't need one for anything, but you might want to borrow one to try some time. It has some things you might like a lot. I have surrounded myself with music all my life including working in radio. I feel I have a true understanding of what sounds right/nice/harmonic to me. I feel what I want to achieve is having a machine that will allow me to create sounds & backings using a fundamental understanding of chords etc. I have recently seen the Roland FANTOM machines that seem to use some kind of AI that could help someone like me? Finally, cost is not an issue but needless to say, I have to be e sensible given this could just be a phase. So with the above in mind, any suggestions? Thanks Stuart

Hi Thanks for this discussion. It should need hours and also to be structured. Synthetic music approach is most of the time linked to the machine to explore and also in a lesser extend the music we would like to hear. Modular vs all-built hardware synth is one usual way. But the approach coud be the way we like to make music or in an other way to say how the way we play music (I mean on a practical way keys, seq., patches, D-beam whatsoever...) leads our musical world, random and surprises would play a big part of this way. Again modular is done for that but the approach is so painful complexity, time and money wise. Regarding yourself, from what I see and hear from your videos, I feel some wonderings, sound-graal-seeking, doubts and constant research you are expressing from the music you desire to play and listen, and share with us; I would say you are a typical candidate for Soma. I imagine you in a large loft (natural reverb mmmmh...) playing only Lyra+Pulsar+Cosmos or Enner. And that's it!

10:10 - I would be really happy with a cheaper and smaller version of Arturia's Polybrute! It could be controlled with a bigger version of Microfreak's keyboard (it's much cheaper than "real" keys!) and has a built-in ribbon controller instead that fancy big button on the left (will be much cheaper as well I guess). Also they could cut out space changing biggest knobs with middle sized. The mod. matrix could be shrinked to ~70%, Maybe something else... I may guess that with all these changes this hybrid (new keys) synth can be cheaper by 40-50%! Oh! They could cut the expenses on the case! Just make a simple ragged body - no molding stuff, just folded metal with cuts and some simple parts. This will make possible to run the smallest batches without paying for the new parts to mold the new case.

Yeah the elitism can some time be tiring to deal with as I run into it and see it a lot more than most do as some one that uses Linux on my desktop. But oddly enough as I've sunk into the PureData, SuperColider and now even starting to work on learning CSound I am on what I would argue is the best OS for that type of stuff. What really seems odd to me is some of the worst elitists I've dealt with in the synth world often seem to talk about gear an awful lot more than they use it. Like even after all these years of playing with synths off and on some aspects of it just strike me as odd as the elitism I see in the synth world is usually about gear and not playing style/ composing abilities, which while I did see some gear related elitism when I was in the Jazz/classical world (especially the classical side of thing) the elitism I seen in the Jazz world as a musician is much more focused on playing ability and music knowledge than gear.
@BoBeats2 жыл бұрын
Its not weird that the elitism centers around the tech. Its after all "synthesizer community" not "synth music community". Because synths are used for a wide range of music. So the community isn't centered around one particular style of music. Thats not what people share an interest in, but rather certain music tech. However like you say the elitism isn't wildly different from say elitism around music in general.

Do you get synth sick? Yes. As anything you work/see everyday. What do you do? I pack them and bring a different set of synths! LOL Love you Bo!

I think the Akai force is the closest thing to a standalone Live controller.

Your right if Ableton made a standalone device it would completely change the game .

I have a Deepmind 12 and a Poly D. I get flack for that. I don't care. They sound nice and I get what I want from them fast. Haters will be haters. And no normal listener cares anyway.

Look no further than the Black Corporation's Deckard's Dream. It's not a clone, but it sports many modern features and circuitry based on CS80. Look it up, there are many videos of it.

Tascam "excellent" Model line of mixers can at times be very disappointing in quality control/reliability department. I went through 3 of them, still ended up with problematic one and had somewhat unpleasant service experience with Tascam Korea. I would stick with Mackie for mixer/audio interface.
