i see nobody speaking of the fact that Eliza IS ALSO AS CREATURE. she has closed gills that you can see from the very beginning of the film, she was found abandonned near a river, she got no voice, juste like Mister Fishman! my guess is that, the very first moment they were in the same room, Eliza was able to sense pheromones emanating from Fishman. she immediately feels the desire to mate, because they're (more or less) the same specie. the water bending power is just another proof that she IS a fishwoman. her powers and abilities were just dormant since she lives within humans.

I agree with you on this 100% I’m glad you also pointed that out .... i was explaining my theory to my brother but you explain it so much better!

You're completely right.. the point made in the film is that true love sees you for who you really are, even when you can't see yourself clearly...which is a fellow creature. She has gills, and she also eats the same protein (egg) diet as the creature, they both love music... there are many links.
@Noelot26 жыл бұрын
When, in the bus window, water droplets appear controlled by Eliza, I imagine that she is tracing their movement rather than responsible for it. Water droplets will move according to air currents (think about when it's raining and you are in your car driving along). It is common for water to form a circular pattern of movement, especially near structures that distort the air stream (like on the driver's side window just behind the rear-view mirror). Just an observation.

She is a hybrid. Those marks on her neck are scales and she was found near the river. That will also explain how she can control the drops of water in the bus. Beautiful story about love, fear, and friendship...Lovely
@juanchavez11766 жыл бұрын
I think the raindrops on the bus was a clue that she wasn’t fully human and that her connection with the creature wasn’t just a beauty and the beast situation but also they were both creatures and they were both beauty. When he heals her at the end and opens her Gills it was a way of saying she was literally a fish out of water the whole time and she was just as magical as the creature.

i figured it out. Eliza did not control the water because she got powers from the creature. those are her own powers. at the end the creature "turns" her scars into gills but they were already gills and he just reopened them. In the scene where striclan calls zelda and eliza into his office he reads their files and it says eliza was found by a river and that she is an orphan. ..... Eliza is a god just like the water creature. Like this comment if it makes sense
@Jesse124896 жыл бұрын
Jordan Rubin No it doesn't. They cut her voice box out. But being found by a river may explain why she loves water. If a child only memory is being in a pool of blood,they might have a interest in it.

you are right she is part fish, or part what ever the fish creature was, because notice how she was only able to be turned on sexually in the water, the bath tub masturbation scene, it is suggesting she is a also a creature of water, and she also needs to be in water to procreate!!
@MFM2306 жыл бұрын

You mean a sea creature not god there's only one God. Also you're saying of Elisa or Amphibian Man being gods contradicts the message of the movie about real love which is neither about treating people as tools nor worshipping them like gods nor being selfish. I liked how Strickland at the beginning treated him like a tool of war, then at the end and after this Amphibian Man healed himself, he feared him but still not treating the creature properly by calling him "you're a god", so the creature killed Strickland in a gruesome way, "which is like him saying to Strickland "Shut your mouth and Die you coward jerk who doesn't treat creatures properly😠"

I really like the theory of her shoes coming off as she embraces the creature under water symbolizing her acceptance of living underwater, giving up her life on land, etc.

Look the meaning behind the shape of water is simple. Water has no shape and can take any form which is parrelled by the theme of love; suggesting there is no ‘shape’ to love, it comes in all different ways and anyone can fall in love with anyone, its whatthe heart desires, so this film is showing the similarity between love and water

I am very close to a couple of people who created The Space Between Us, and helped out one day on set. It was a special film project by young new film makers. There could be no way they knew about some big shot Hollywood director's idea before hand. They barely had any connections to big budget production houses etc. The team doesn't want money or claims to property, it wants recognition for it's achievements. If you're inspired by a movie, that's great! If it's an award winning short by a group of young, talented and enthusiastic people, that's even better! Just give them a nod, a shout out. That would mean the world to them personally and to their careers.

I don't think del Toro knew about TSBU since TSOW has been in production for 5 years before it was released. That's way longer than the release of the former. Also, please watch the movie. The message and stories are completely different. Falling in love with a monster is not a new idea at all (e.g. Beauty and the Beast). In one of his interviews, del Toro even mentioned about making a story like this since he was 6 years old.

About the shoe symbolism, I would also add my hypothesis that it can be part of an intended series of deviations of well known traditional fairytales: - There's a deviation coming from Beauty and the Beast, Princess and the Frog and similar stories, since the "beast" or "frog" doesn't turn into a human; - Speaking about outter looks, the "princess" is not meant to be a great beauty either in order to deserve the love of a river/water god (I personally find the actress really attarctive, but that's my personal taste. I'm just recognizing she's not into the physical stereotype of a great beauty); - There's also the "awakening kiss" thing, which comes from Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and similar stories; - As you pointed out, there's a referrence to The Little Mermaid due to the lack of the character's voice; - But finally I'd say that the shoe comes from Cinderella. Because in this case the female character loses her shoe - and just one shoe, just like Cinderella - when she finally reunites with her prince in order to live happily ever after.

I don't really care where he got the concepts or material-- he did a wonderful and artistic job of pulling it together. Deep and mystical, gave me much to think about, unlike any of the 'fairytale' versions such as Beauty and The Beast' which weren't my cup of tea, and I would have never been drawn to any of the other comparisons show in this youtube video. As long as those mentioned as plagiarizing their work don't speak up proving otherwise-- two things are among many possible -- there was an agreement, 2. the 2015 film copied the Shape of Water by someone leaking notes? I don't know, but I started a book 18 years ago I was told by an agent my story or concept had never been done, and to finish it. I stopped writing because of life and children and lost contact with the woman. I may finish it and discover in the last even 10 years similar books have been written even though i have not found any, but since my material has being shared, someone may have copied some of it. Does it matter to me, No, because it is needed on the planet now in any form it can be expressed. I just started finishing it 3 months ago as I was told it was timely for today, Although I believe18 years ago we had a chance to turn the planet around, I now believe it is too late, we have gone too far to the dark side. The Shape of Water was magical, meaningful, and beautifully executed.

Abe sapiens was not originally a ichthyo sapien but was a HUMAN scientist who, with his team, found a jellyfish like creature, experimented on himself eventually creating who he is today. He was found in 1978, the movie is set in 1961 and even if he is their kid that leaves them 18-19 years to raise him, he become a genius scientist and have years worth of experimentation in that timeline. It's virtually impossible, plus with the whole thing of abes name origin being that he was born when Abe Lincoln died says he was born at that time.

A god
@Mike_Toulon6 жыл бұрын
Jack Grazer technically, yes, it was a "god" that created him, but an occult group are the ones directly responsible for his creation. Sapien began his life as Langdon Everett Caul, a Victorian scientist and businessman who became involved with the Oannes Society, an occult organization who believed in life and all knowledge having come from the sea. After retrieving a strange jellyfish-like deity from an underwater ruin, Caul and the other members performed an arcane ritual that inadvertently ended with the creature's release and Caul being turned into an ichthyo sapien. Believing him to be Oannes reborn, the society sealed the developing icthyo sapien's body in a tube of water in the hidden laboratory beneath a Washington, D.C.. hospital until such time as he was fully formed. Forced to abandon the site by the outbreak of the American Civil War, the Society never found occasion to return for Caul, and there he stayed until he was found by workmen in November 1978. With no memory of his life before, the icthyo sapien received a new name from a piece of paper attached to the tube, dated the day of Abraham Lincoln's assassination (April 14, 1865)

They aren't Abe Sapien's parents. For one thing they are too young(this takes place in the Cold War era, Abe came around in the 1800s). Here is Abe's origin: a human scientist(or an occultist) finds a strange egg, he experiments on it, egg turns to dust, he has a strange spiritual experience, his body transforms into what is now known as Abe Sapien, and then he spent a large portion of time in stasis.

He was a human scientists until he turned into what he is now after some type of ritual. He was sealed into a tube of water, with the date 14th April 1865 on it, in a laboratory hidden under a hospital in Washington DC. He then was found in 1978 by plumber workmen. Therefore Abe could never been the Asset because he would have still been undiscovered. Abe and the Asset are also not the same species. Abe was once a human and turned into a fish man afterwards. The Asset is a humanoid amphibious creature that was found in the Amazonian river. The Shape of Water is not a prequel to Hell Boy nor does it take place in the same universe. They are both completely separate fictional worlds. Just because both like eggs and classical music doesnt mean they have a connection. (Don't get me wrong, I liked both of the movies very much) Hell Boy and The Shape of Water was written and directed by the same guy, Guillermo del Toro. He just likes the idea of humanoid amphibious creatures. He said it himself that those two movies are not connected. I think this is the best way to describe it.

This is an unrelated content question, but considering I've initiated conversations concerning this movie several times with people and have been amazed to find how un-mainstream it is, when you say this film is an "indie film" what do you mean? I think I've heard that title used in different ways so I'm not sure if indie films are referring to films that are popular and blockbuster (i.e. Transformers 2009, basically any Disney movie, the trend of Marvel movies, etc.) OR if "indie" means unpopular movies that a small group of people get super pumped for. This is a totally random question, but, considering how pumped I am and always have been about Abe Sapien, I would love to know. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure an indie film is an independent film, ie not tied into a studio.

How???? Shape of water takes place in the 1960s. Abe Sapien was already revived by then when he was found under St. Trinian's hospital. Abe Sapien is also a lot older by at least two hundred years then Elisa and the asset. Before Abe Sapien merged with the water entity when he was part of the Oanes Society he was a human man named Langdon Everett Caul who was a business man in the 1860s. He physically looked like he was in his 30s even though he was 75 years old chronologically. So Abe/ Langdon has been around since at least the 18th century making him way to old to be the son of Elisa and the asset because when they met Abe was already awake by then and more then a century old

I actually thought it was a pre story for Abe.

Also the symbolism of the colour green in this movie is interesting. First the drawing/painting that Giles does of the red jello that they want him to change to green, then the key lime pie he eats and stocks up on in his fridge, then the green jello that Strickland's wife makes, the green candy he is obsessed with eating, his car's whole green/teal debate. A lot of green.

To those who've seen this film, I have to say, The Shape of Water takes the term "eating pussy" to a whole different level!

1:50 they aren´t "developing" him though, he was found and taken to the facility to be studied. Actually in the area he was found it was believed that the creature was a deity, a god.

Which shows that both people in his original area and the people of the cold war didn't treat the Amphibian Man as "Creature". Not until Elisa being the first creature to treat him like what he is. All of this is a part of the moral of the movie about the real meaning of love

13 nominations? Best picture, best director, best original music score ? So now tell me more about what’s wrong with shape of water ... all your comments about it ... are simply nothing... remember is just movie ?

Hmm... honestly despite the possibility of plagiarism. Both movies are pretty amazing

Have you ever actually had a chance to actually watch the whole movie not just the trailer.

Didn’t del toro produce “mama” based on a short film? Maybe this was a similar incident. He doesn’t steal anything, he elaborated the plot and made it into something special. I doubt the space between us wasn’t given credit. That’s not something del toro would do.

I've seen both Hellboy and The Shape of Water. THEY ARE NOT CONNECTED. There are tips of the hat to Abe here and there but they are two VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. I do recommend The Shape of Water, though. Fantastic film.

+Noiz Helm I think there could be a connection with Creature though. See my newest Shape of Water video.

Guillermo Del Toro began the writing of The Shape of water in 2011, way before the Short (2015). Stop insinuating that Del Toro plagiarized. He is a good director with a bright career. In any case, the people from the Short plagiarized Guillermo.
