Excellent video covering all the main points to consider when purchasing trees. I would add that I mostly agree with "buy the biggest you can" but would add a couple of exceptions. In my experience, almost all trees will generally grow faster when planted as a transplant versus a seedling except for scotch pine. I've tried many 2-1 scotch pine transplants and could not tell the difference several years later between those and 2-0 scotch pine seedlings. White pine give me the most bang for the buck when going bigger, but they get very "leggy" or long and floppy and require a good staking job from the beginning as 2-2 or 2-3 transplants. They do, however, give you a mature Christmas Tree at least one year faster than a 2-0 seedling. One final point: in my experience, 2-0 and 2-1 trees will fare better the first year if you encounter lengthy periods of dry or wet conditions. It seems like the smaller trees are just a little bit more adaptable. Thanks for the video!

Great info. Didn't know the numbering system. Our order was in just in the nick of time but did not have a coice of sizes. And because of nobdy working last year, most state nurseries were short of supply. We went thru the county nursery and only learned about them thru our NRCS office. I am going to try to raise spruce from seed gathered from a couple of 100 year old trees from our property this year, just as an experiment to see if I can do it. A HUGE Thank you for the Nursery List!!!!

Also, sounds like fall planting survival rates are better than spring?

If you asked me a few months ago, I would have said absolutely, but I actually don't know yet. We've lost quite a few from last Fall's planting between our dry July and wet August (11 inches of rain in August). I'll have to do a final tally and update in a video here soon

I just found your channel and I love it! I'm thinking of starting a Christmas tree farm in the near future and your video are very helpful. I'm currently in the seed business and am not sure if I would be starting from seed and germinating them myself or starting from seedlings. Anyway great info it's awesome getting to see the other side of agriculture. I can't wait to binge watch all your videos!

Quite interesting to follow how the christmas trees are made in your part of the world. Where i come from, north part of Europa, we mainly grow Abies nordmanniana and Norway Spruce for Christmas trees. When mentioning the numbers 2/0 2/1 etc., it does not indicate the number of years in seed bets and as transplants. It refers to the number of growing seasons, which is just a small part of the year. Quite often seedlings are lined out during summer, in that case a s is added to the first number. Finally i have to say the nurseries in the US know how to set prices, in Europa similar trees are way cheeper.

Very informative vidieo. I ordered from chief river valley and got big plugs of Norway. They sell by the size. 480 dollars for 120 trees 12 to 18 inches. Did I make a mistake?

@@darrengarlough5121 I've never ordered from them but have heard mixed feedback. $4/tree is more than Ive paid for similar size Norway's.

How does the monterey pine grow? There is no pines combs that grow from them to get seeds from so would the branches have to be probigated?

We are just starting to look into starting a small Christmas tree farm in east Tennessee around Gatlinburg. We are struggling with the best way to get financing for our land. We would like to build our primary residence on the same property as the farm. Do you have any advice?
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I don't have too much advice. We financed through the Farm Credit co-op. The process was pretty straightforward for just raw land with 20% down. See if there's a Farm Credit in your area and see what they say.

@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm Ай бұрын
I haven't had great results with plugs. I think with our hot summers they don't have enough time to establish roots to survive.

Interesting video. We have used several suppliers. We used Bosch's trees twice. The first time was OK. The second time we received the trees in bad shape. They were not dead but the trees were grown to close together and did not have a pyramid shape all around. MANY did not have a leader, disappointing. Planted 2 years ago and still no leader. Will use for wreaths. Contacted Brian, showed pictures he did nothing. I would not use this company again.

@@WoodsTreeFarm Yes we have on some of them. Some we gave up on because of the lop side trees. I figured let them grow and we can use them for other purposes. What really bothered me with Bosch Nursery, was he was not willing to do anything about the problem. He did acknowledge there was some growing issues but that is where it ended. WHY send a bad product? So there are many places to buy trees, unfortunate to have to write about another company....but when someone does not stand by a product when they knew there was a problem than maybe they do not deserve a good review. Good luck with your farm, my wife and I bought a farm that was let go, but now after 8 years it is doing fine. One last thing, we had 100s of over grown trees some 20' tall. We did not have a chance to clear them and replant. IT WAS A GOOD THING. Our first year we had some photographers looking to do family photos. We now have over 50 a year use the farm, they all want our farm because the large and small trees in that field are perfect for photos. So if you have a place to save some for photo purposes you can do pretty well with the photographer fees and like you mentioned with the sunflowers, it brings people in that otherwise would know about the farm. Someday we should talk about sunflowers. The photographers tell me that is big with photos, so we are trying some this year.

A quick look at the video description and you could have answered your own question. Even though I spent several hours assembling, and then have continued to maintain the largest North American supplier list on the internet, I recognize you couldn't be bothered to watch a 12 minute video, or even spend an extra 15 seconds to glance at the video description, and instead thought leaving a low-value comment was your best course of action. A+ to you.
