Enjoyed the chat among pros. We heat 99% with 2 wood stoves since 2000 in Downeast Maine. Last winter was not 'warm' ( like to say) for us since temps below 32 F began in November and didn't let up until mid April. It stayed relatively warm for winter here, not much down to the singles or below zero, and plenty of rain, with no snow to help insulate the house and land. We used more firewood this year, close to 8 real cords, than when we built. Even started to get into the hot tub spruce/fir softwood stacks from trail work blowdowns in April-May-June for those morning/evening fast fires. Few now here have any need or want to use firewood for heating. It is more like you both marketing for intermittent warmth from central heat thermostat at ~65F, fireplace, weekend fires, fire pit fun. We stihl like the wood heat and the effort to harvest, haul, split, stack, burn. Nice presentation guys.

You went to a good place while in Wisconsin for advice. Chris defiantly has a method that works for him. But what separates him is what he said towards the end of the video: customer service. Like he said, people like it when they feel cared about. He may have still done fine but without his customer service style, but the neighbor may have run him off without good sales, if stuck at his first yard and thrown in the towel. Now you have to see what is best for you. Joe, at Ohio Wood Burner, is a complete 180 and insists stacking is the way to go and is worth more money. And it works for him...and probably others too. The overall business advice probably will help you as much as anything and Chris gave a good deal of it.

Yeah for sure. You could do that on pretty much any trimmer. Sometimes you need spacers/adapters to go on the cutter head but shouldn't be difficult to figure out

I've had my eyes on a conveyor for a while now. I'll probably do more big pallet bins like Chris In The Woodyard and it would be nice to conveyor straight into the bin. I think if I do that, grizzly bars are necessary to keep as much slash out of the pile as possible.

I would imagine one of the more frustrating issues as a business owner is having to still rely on others for various things. And to an extent, I don't blame you. It's why people like you go into owning and operating your own business; to do things more on your time and terms. But all and all, you are making the best of it. Perhaps there are some guys in your area that work in woodlots that may be willing to bring you logs at an agreed price? It may not help a lot but if you found a reliable enough guy it could help both of you. As someone who worked like that I would have done so, if ever asked, in my local area. Decent side money at least. Hopefully the logger gets going again soon.

Business ownership isn't for the faint of heart. There's a constant reprioritization of tasks based on current conditions and more often than not you have to put stuff you don't want to do or deal with at the top of the list.

Yes maybe a small solar fan would work? Dont know for sure but its just a thought to try aling with tye kiln. Just a test to see. The kiln is speeding things up thats for sure. I think your idea to process in the shade will help production for sure also. I remember those days in the beating sun splitting. The show must go on even in those conditions but if you can set ip in shade it will help. Keep up the great work. Do you have other resources for logs? Sometimes when their is competition they seem to move quicker. But i know you said you had quality issues with others. So i dont know then. Stay focused and it will happen. 👍🪵🌲

Ever think of a greenhouse for drying wood. Clear plastic maybe heats up just as hot in the sunshine. It's worth a try. I dont know for sure. But when I used a greenhouse for plant starts it gets hot and dry. Even if you start with a 10x10 to see.The shade for processing will help with the energy levels also.
@WoodsTreeFarm5 күн бұрын
Yes, I've seen makeshift solar kilns by wrapping palletized wood with clear plastic. The key there is ensuring airflow somehow to it won't trap moisture and get moldy.

Have you considered setting up a drip system for the trees?
@WoodsTreeFarm5 күн бұрын
yes particularly for the little ones during their first two years getting established.
@Bobby2Lungs6 күн бұрын
Love this setup! I need some help with a few more details as I'm trying to setup something similar for my boss' food plot for his hunting. 1) So you're filling the 275 gallon tote with the Duromax pump (which I have the same one) & you empty with the Pacer pump with one 1.5" Rain Gun Sprinkler. Does the tote ever get overfilled or emptied between the two pumps, or does it have a decent equilibrium? 2) With this tandem setup, what is the longest run you have all together? Thanks again, all your videos have been so educational & helpful!
@themortgage1team6 күн бұрын
Following this!
@WoodsTreeFarm5 күн бұрын
You'll have to dial in the throttle on the duromax to get it pumping into the tote at the right rate. Mine is always set up where I can kind of keep an eye on it and I can go adjust the flow as needed. The duromax is capable of moving water a long distance so I have no doubt you could go 1000ft or more as long as there isn't too much elevation. The key is using as short of a run from the tote to the sprinkler as you can so you can maintain as much pressure as possible.... that's why I went to this setup. I have 600ft of 2" layflat and if I try pump from the pond directly to the sprinkler over that distance it loses a lot of pressure and it'll only wet a 50-60ft circle at the most. This setup is doing consistently 120+ft.
@Bobby2Lungs5 күн бұрын
@@WoodsTreeFarm thank you for this intel!! My plan is to go 300 ft from the pond to the tote with my Duromax and then ~175 ft from the tote to the food plot sprinkler with the Pacer (I'm going to buy the same one you have). That should cover me then. I plan to run the same sprinkler you have and just run one since we only have a 1/3 acre of a food plot. I greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us! Have a blessed day sir!

Ever consider drip irrigation? It is a bit of work to setup but does a great job and puts a lot less water on the weeds
@WoodsTreeFarm5 күн бұрын
yes we have, especially on the trees under 2 years old as they're most vulnerable.
@danradtke16637 күн бұрын
Watering for sure is a chore but very necessary to save all that hard work you did over the years. Great job. When are you getting that chipper to run mulch down your rows? Hope it will increase time saved with weeds and grass cuts. Just a thought. Pumpkin patch?
@WoodsTreeFarm5 күн бұрын
I don't really have any intention of getting a chipper. We've rented a chipper before and its very time consuming. We've received tons of wood chips free from local tree services and found spreading wood chips to also be very labor intensive and I don't know if the work was worth the result.
@danradtke16635 күн бұрын
Yes I forgot you got the wood chips from the tree trimmers. Everything worth doing takes work. But you have machines to spread it?
@watershedoverlook7 күн бұрын
Man Phil, I'm watering the hell out of my grass over here...can't imagine having to manage watering all that! But I feel you...I don't have irrigation, so I use sprinklers on a timer, and have similar water volume issues when I hook up multiple sprinkler heads. Kinda' aggravating. 🤨👍
@WoodsTreeFarm7 күн бұрын
The fire hose nozzle does 1gal per second so that makes quick work on the trees. The overhead irrigation takes much longer. Figure it takes 26k gallons to drop 1inch per acre you gotta move a lot of water (while fighting evaporation). I'm of the thought that anything is better than nothing and we'll do what we can with the equipment we have

Wood chips will tie up some nitrogen. Not all, but enough. If you want to help drainage and pierce the hardpan, plant tillage radishes in the fall. The rows should be perpendicular to the surface water flow. Did it to my clay ground and helped immensely. Good luck.

We actually did radish this last fall for the first time and had OK results. I'll plan on doing it again in the future.
