You sometimes can see the same sort of " metal things " on old cottages. I believe its to brace the walls from bulging out.

They're (overdimensioned) tie-rods. When heavy vehicles pass over the bridge, the downforce from the axles tends to push the masonry cheeks outwards. The rods (with endplates) counteract this.

Nice first spring jaunt to Hawkesbury. Recent US-based (but UK born) subscriber (binge-watched your entire channel over the last few months). The stretch you are on now brings back memories of my childhood. As a family, we hired from Rose Narrowboats on our summer holidays and did a lot of the midlands navigation stuff (the various rings, GU, B'ham, etc). Incidentally, the tiny Hawkesbury stop lock was the first lock my brother and I operated alone (we were about 8 and 10 years old at the time). Would love to follow in your footsteps and live the dream of owning and living aboard a narrowboat, but for now am very content to cruise vicariously via your thoroughly entertaining commentary and lovely visual work. Look forward to seeing more of your 2019 cruising videos.

Hello David, the prohibited moorings at Ansty are because the canal is banked quite high in comparison to the nearby houses. The residents complained and won stating that moored boats along that section would be at the same level as the upper floors of the houses and this they would have their privacy compromised. I hope that helps to explain. See you when you come up the Coventry. Paul.

Paul Wennington One would think that the residents of those dreary, 1970's looking estate houses would be thankful of a cheerful scene to look out upon, bringing a bit of colour to an otherwise drab existence! The canal predates the houses by approaching two centuries- how can they not have realised when they bought the places that boats might actually use it?! It's rather like the type of people that move to pretty rural villages only to complain about church bells and mooing cows. Personally, I think anyone who does so should be placed in the village stocks for a few days and be handed a massive fine for their stupidity.

Another relaxing ride down the canal in the UK. Such green & from what you showed us was not to much trash. Except the cart in the canal. Bet if you had one of those underwater cameras it would show us a different story. I just don't understand why people can not pick up after themselves. I was watching a sailing channel & they where in there little boat going a long a drift patch of debris & started picking up plastic everything. It's just sad to see it all & around fish, turtles, & other things in the ocean. Well enough of that, bc it's a long on going problem people needs to fix on there own. But until they figure out it starts w/themself, it will never get solved. Thank you for the relaxing ride David. It was a lovely trip, Chris from Missouri

@@CruisingTheCut yes, you are correct. I really like that they try there best to not use plastic & is sharing it w/the world. I try, but everytime I go to store. I forget my reusable bag totes. I guess I suffer from CRS = Can't Remember Shit syndrome.... lol.... it's getting worse as I get older. A few weeks ago my husband was going to cook fish in the deep fryer. Well are corn mill was 4 yrs out dated & they had those little bugs that gets into flour & noodles. So I ran to the store real quick. Got home & husband was putting everything away & he asked me "Where's the corn meal?" I said a few choose words to me self... lol... And Said I'll run back to the store & he said I'll just bake them in the oven w/lemon, onion, salt, pepper, & butter. I eat everything on my plate & a extra piece of fish he didn't eat. I was seating in tall cotton.... lol... if the butter wasn't in it, it would of been better for me. But I was happy, happy, happy no matter how he cooked it. But I reuse the plastic bags in my small trash cans. So it makes me fell a little better by reusing them. My neighbor burns all kinds of stuff like beds, play houses, tires, & so on. Makes me mad, bc everytime she does it, it blows into my house. Idk who to call & report it to? Any help would be great from anyone. Have a wonderful day, Chris from Missouri

Being a retired firefighter - we learned what they where in fire school. Means the walls where leaning outward. To stabilize the building / bridge etc. They put a rod though the entire structure with 'star' or 'round' nuts at the end. "The stars weren’t put on buildings when they were made, but were put on later when owners noticed that the brick and mortar joints started cracking. Without being fixed, a building could actually split in half and crumble. This is a very common problem with brick structures."

Pete Moring --- Nonsense, you barely notice the railways in most of the country. We're not going back to full diesel or coal, so you'll have to live with the electric trains. You also have to remember that the canals were working corridors, that's why you see a lot of industrial/infrastructure buildings alongside.

"CC" really does read all comments 😊 This channel is for my "switch off" time. I encourage everyone to sit back, get comfortable, forget everything and just relax a little bit.... And view this channels content. Life is simple... We only complicate it with unnecessary problems

What a toe path that you can walk next to a person or you won't knock someone over. lol That always bugged me too. Plus it's nice and green here I get it. Oh yes, welcome back. Wouldn't it be nice if someone (a narrowboater) thru out some flower seeds along the toepath or both sides that way it will look like a big garden. Wait a minute the area where they say don't stop they place signboards that you have to stop in order to read. Sounds like gov't work to me. : ) peace

It is nice to see your pre-travel routine. Poor Kath--another dig about her slow water fill-up. Will she ever live it down? Congratulations on once again being a continuous cruiser. Looking forward to seeing your latest adventures.

When the other boat passed and you "if your listening in stereo you'll hear on the right" reminded me. When I've listened to "One" by Metallica using head phones. It sound like the helicopter at the start has flown into one ear and out of the other.

I really enjoy your civilized style, it promotes a positive and grounded feel. I imagine such fine canals also draw those who use it as a means of dodgy living and where rules are skirted.

Peppermint oil for spiders works a treat. You can get it on amazon, sprinkle it out pop it on a cloth and rub where they occur and hay presto the spiders will disappear. I sprinkle it. 😊😊

I liked the prep work, prior to the shove-off. and the overall cruise seemed rather enjoyable. Especially enjoy the English country-side, as being of British descent, I find it some of the best in the world. The architecture, bridges, and other structures could never be replaced, in these modern times. Guard them well. And concerning the River Trust, I was hoping they had some kind of ongoing river maintenance works programs, to kind of keep an eye on things, as you go along. Just maybe a little spruce-up here and there to make these trips a little more enjoyable. Just a thought. Carry on, mate. HIP, HIP.

This has got to be one of my favorite videos. This is the one that got me into your channel, and when I first saw it, as an American, it was very strange and foreign, like living in someone else's shoes for a day. And not knowing anything. But now? Now I've binged almost all your content, returned, and enjoyed this video as much as the first time (much lest confused this go around) THX!

I thoroughly enjoy watching your vlogs more than any other. Your use of English is a joy to hear 'a cathedral of concrete' and 'the metal overlords stare down'. The English language is such a beautiful language - your eloquence is unmatched by anyone else on the net. Are you a published author? Best wishes and thanks.

Thank you, yes I've upgraded the audio this year; the handheld cam still has a mono mic but I've just ordered a stereo one for that too, which I'll pick in a few weeks.

@@CruisingTheCut That's excellent, the canals have good opportunities for stereo audio, the birds and crickets on either side, the odd narrow boat chugging past and those occasional trains wizzing bye... (I use a few Rode stereo video mikes myself, adds another spatial dimension :-)
