I’ve been obsessed with the gym sense I joined about 5 1/2 months ago as a freshman in high school I dove deep into Andrew huberman and the understanding of glycolysis, mitosis, alpha hydroxy acids, DHEA, creation of adenosine triphosphate, brown fat, effects of potassium, best salt for sodium tradeoff for electrolytes (in my opinion himilayan salt), Hydroxymethbutrate, MACA, Lactate, Gluclose, Cell scraping, and ecdystrome. With this information I’ve slowly out grown those who put at this point 8 months of time into the gym because of what I’ve put in. I’ve gained 25 lbs and found myself at almost 150 lbs after being a skinny f*** as long as I can remember. Thank y’all for this podcast, this is the information and talks I love to hear! I never thought I’d enjoy podcasts but people do not understand the use of these things.

Totally agree with you on the leg curls! I used to do them for warm ups for leg day. However, the exercise I found that does even better is backwards sled pulls. Great burn and I feel that it is way more functional and it woks the legs unilaterally.
@Jon-cu4kv

Sled pulls have no eccentric, there’s no deep stretch. Leg curl’s train knee flexion with a deep stretch, especially seated ones. So sled’s arent great from a hypertrophy point of view if that’s a concern

Favorite exercises: sleds pushes and sled pulls both are easier on the joints than most lower body exercises. Also we spend so much time training the muscles that propel us forward while walking but very little time on the ones that allow us to move backwards.

Favorite exercise: Any Squat variation - Usually I focus on different Squat techniques like pause squats, front squats and most importantly back squats to really workout my legs. Some form of Squats are always on my program - if not I usually squeeze it in. Least favorite exercise - Behind the neck Shoulder press - now if you have the mobility and the right form this is definitely something you can use for your shoulders, but I just can’t seem to ever do this exercise. When I first started lifting I remember my trainer had me do these and I remember my shoulder always feeling terrible during that first program I ran, but never connected the dots. After I ditched this exercise for the standard military press and just any other infront of the body shoulder press, I could never go back. My shoulders have felt way better ever since

My favorite exercise is probably the squat. Since my shoulder mobility sucks, I bought a SSB and doesn’t hurt my shoulders. I know I need to work on the mobility issues, but time and money aren’t always on my side. My least favorite would have to be walking lunges, I’ve never gotten the form mastered, and they tend to hurt my knees, and just all around feel weird. I’m also guilty of not using machines correctly, lol. I usually do the machine press backwards, it’s tends to hurt my shoulders when I sit in it with my back on the back rest. Great show as usual, thanks for all the great content you guys put out.

Favorite: trap bar deadlift-- functional exercise because humans are meant to carry and pick up on their sides. Overall great compound exercise. Worst: Upright rows-- much better substitutes that don’t put your shoulder in a compromised position. Most people already have shoulder problems and this will worsen those issues.

Weighted dips are better for upper body pushing strength. It allows you to recruit more muscle fibers to push heavier weight. With the bench press, it takes your rear delts and makes them stabilizers rather than movers, this makes it seem like you have a weak upper body, but you don't, you just don't have access to those rear delts and traps to help you move more weight, so in reality a strong bencher could have a weaker upper body pound for pound, but the weighted dipper who is able to fully utilize his entire upper body to push someone away from him or push some car to a gas station or whatever situation demands you push something heavy without the added support of a bench to lay down on, my money would go onto the guy who does weighted dips, because his entire upper body is being utilized to push something in a real life situation. There's gonna be more situations where you're standing upright and have to push something rather than laying down and getting a perfect grip and make your body arch. So weighted dips, overhead press and push-ups are gonna get you better strength to deal in real life situations, while bench press gives you more bragging rights. If you do weighted dips overhead press and push-ups, you're core strength will also adapt, automatically making a stronger upper body pound for pound. If you're looking for some training advice I'm happy to help

@@ethanfrancisco5446 I find bench press to be a competition lift and bodybuilding isolation move at best, and while people do get ridiculously strong at, I don't believe that its gonna help them get out of a life or death situation. Access to your full upper body strength rather than have your chest shoulders and triceps be ridiculously strong to the point where it's out of proportion to the rest of your body,, I prefer full access to my upper body strength as well as mobility, and it's no secret that bench limits mobility, while dips, pushups, and overhead press progress them the more you do them. In a combat situation, weighted calisthenics with OHP is the best way to go

Favorite exercise: Heavy barbell Romanian deadlifts. I incorporated these into my routine about 6 months ago (thanks to the info from this show) and no single exercise has had a bigger positive impact on my physique. My back, butt, hamstrings, and quads have all blown up thanks to it, and I just feel better and stronger overall. Least favorite exercise: cheat curls, performed incorrectly. Lots of guys at the gym use momentum and swing their body to hoist heavy curls up into position, no pause at the top, and then a quick negative as well. So quick concentric, isometric, and eccentric portions of the movement - which arguably defeats the purpose of a cheat curl. Cheat curls should be reserved for advanced lifters who know how to control their bodies to get some value out of them, but it seems like most of the beginner-to-intermediate (mostly male) lifters incorporate them into their routine.

Weirdly I think I have to say close grip bench press because I love the feeling of a heavy load on the triceps. Aside from skullcrushers which I also enjoy, most triceps focused movements I just sort of struggle feeling like the weight is either too light where I have to hit 20 reps to approach fatigue or its too heavy to where I feel like my form suffers and my elbows are under a lot of stress. You would think there has to be a middle ground but I can't seem to ever find it with those movements. Close grip bench press I can load up and really work to 1-2 RPE in the 4-8 rep range with solid form and no elbow discomfort.

I am so glad I do none of these exercises and that my contempt for combo moves in the few Body Pump classes I went to is justified. Why on earth are gyms still putting people through these stupidly programmed moves, inappropriate for the clientele (like you said, mostly middle-aged and out of shape) and not even possible (going from a deadlift to overhead press or Olympic moves that people don't know how to do).

My favorite exercise has to be a weighted pull up. It's a great compound movement and if you're adding volume you'll see some great back and bicep gains depending on the grip and body postion. My least favorite is the dumbbell fly. The time under tension is minimal and it puts your shoulders in a vulnerable positon, it's not worth it (I hope arnold isn't reading these comments 😅). You're better off doing some type of cable fly.

I think flys are kinda bs anyway, i get all the chest development i need from incline bench and weighted dips. For back its definitley weighted pullups and barbell row. For legs its barbell lunges and stiff leg deadlifts.

Weighted pull ups are so important for my routine that I do them in the morning separate from my late afternoon regular workout. I want to make sure I’m fresh for them and that I get enough recovery time after them for the rest of my workout. I sort of agree with you about the dumbbell fly, but I’ve worked them back into my routine this cycle. I do them laying on the floor rather than the bench and perform them very slowly with lighter weights, especially paying particular attention to the eccentric portion of the movement and internally cueing the pecs for the concentric portion. That being said, cable flies are superior like you mentioned.

Your shoulder is only in a bad position if you are doing the movement incorrectly. I also agree that it's not a very valuable exercise unless your are a body builder. It can help new people build a mind to muscle connection with their chest but besides that ..I don't program it into my clients programs.

Dumbbell flyes put your chest in a maximally stretched position which has been proven to be superior for hypertrophy (check out Dr Mike from RP for that, and can help build flexibility in that region which is good for preventing injury in the long run. In regards to the vulnerable position, if you build up to it correctly then you should be fine. In fact, a lot of injuries come from a lack of range of motion in the shoulder joint. I don’t particularly use it as a main muscle builder but as a weighted stretch to help maintain flexibility and stability in the shoulder

My favorite exercise is the conventional Deadlift and my new 405 PR I did last week. My least favorite are any arm exercises especially the bicep curls. I never saw the gains, but I have always focused on compound lifts, Deadlift, Bench Press, Pullups.

My favorite exercise is the pull up. It’s a classic and it get my back fired up. My least favorable workout is the barbell high pull. It’s always hurt my shoulder and I broke my neck so now it’s even highly discouraged by my medical team.

My favorite exercise is the barbell squat. Any variation or type of barbell. My workout isn't complete without at least one good form barbell squat. My least favorite exercise (to perform) is Bulgarian Split Squats. I'll do lunges, reverse lunges, single leg on a leg press, but Bulgarians really test my stability and single leg strength on another level

I have another stupid exercise to add to your list. My old personal trainer would have me run on a treadmill that was turned off!! He also knew at that time I ran 3 to 5 miles prior to our sessions. He never did the major exercises with me like squats or deadlifts🤦‍♀️. I am definitely in a better place now following MAPS Aesthetics!! Love your programming!

I stopped doing deadlifts and squats and do dumbbell lunges and hip thrusts. I herniated a disc when I used to do deadlifts and squats aggravated it. Going to lunges has me feeling the best I've felt since I was in my early 20's. I may not have as much raw strength but I feel much more agile and balanced.

Favourite exercise: squats. I'm not super great at them but I just love them nonetheless. Least favourite? Hip thrusts. To the point where I dread a workout containing them [please tell me they are not a must]...I hate all the preparation they take, plus finding enough space and the right tools (stepper, barbell, weights) in a crowded gym isn't always possible....also, one time a guy was doing his cooldown and it happened to be right in from of me...he was stretching his neck while I was doing the exercise -not weird or uncomfortable at all, to have someone staring directly at your crutch the whole time :)))))

My favorite exercise is probably shrugs or tricep pull downs probably because I see results so fast in my traps and triceps. My least favorite squats not for the reason you might think they used to be my favorite but I've had sciatica in the past I used to do squats followed by deadlifts heavy I love it but when I turned 30 my lower back started hurting because of sciatica not sure if it was because of the heavy load I was putting on my back. But I've been scared ever since it's been like 5yrs since any real pain so maybe not my least favorite but the scariest for me. If you guys have any advice that would be much appreciated. Love the show keep up the good work

I must say tricep kickbacks have worked for me after modifying them...I twist my arm out as I reach the top of the rep so that my palm is facing upwards at the top of the movement and then pause for a second at the top of the move.. hits all heads of the triceps. Had to do these since French presses and overhead extensions hurt my elbows..

Leg curl movement are necessary for complete hamstring development, does not have to be leg curl machine, could be nordic curls or Glute ham raise, but Deadlifts (even if it's RDL) alone are not enough if your goal is hyperthrophy.

Pull ups: Biceps, lats, grip strength, great amount of exercise variations, super functional and useful for real world transfer involving the hands and arms And to top it all off, most of the time it’s challenging, so once you get used to doing it and incorporate more volume your arms will be totally yoked.

My favorite exercise is dips. I love the pump I get in my triceps. My least favorite exercise is squats. I feel like I can deadlift an adequate amount for my physique, but when I do squats to proper depth with what to the best of my knowledge feels like proper form, I feel like the weight I can squat is extremely insufficient. They make me self-conscious.
