I agree with Brightbulb Photography's assessment that these locks are perhaps fake WB. The inconsistency of the logo and the poor quality of the shackle material makes me think these are a knock off. WB being a family company has such pride in their product that I don't see them allowing their standards to have dropped so low. They have made padlocks the same way for decades on the same precision machines that a new batch of locks would just not come out that poorly made. I think perhaps send these to the company for verification of the truth, fake or real WB's, the company would be able to tell instantly if this came from their factory or not, cheers

Our company uses these, light tension with a wiper insert and it flies open when picked with another wiper insert. Tickle it with a rake and it won't stay shut. And the bitting is actually decent.

I dont understand how a company that has such 'pride' in their product could allow such an easy and well known exploit (shimming) in their locks for decades and not fix it.

I have questions about these locks because prior to Covid purchased three pair of WB locks for customer jobs and the locks and keys I received were first rate as always. I have purchased WB locks for years and never had a keep that did not have the the rough edges knocked off it and the build quality always been great. As far as the key biting remember WB will make locks to anyone specs so who knows if those were off the shelf or customer keys and frankly I think it slightly irresponsible to slam a company without contacting them first.

I have around 12 of the 50mm variant, and the _easiest_ way is to use the *"Sawtooth"* pick from the GoSo (brass colored) set and a thick wrench (I use the music wire one that came with the aforementioned set) and quickly rake and rock under *very* heavy tension. They open for me in less than 10 seconds even with heavy aging on them. _"Herculock"_ padlocks work the same way, and essentially *are* the same lock. _Keys mean nothing! Happy picking to you!_

It seems as if this WB lock doesn not have a second locking pawl...the cutout on the longer side of the shackle might merely act as a guide to let the shackle only close when swung into the right angle. I'm not certain in this idea, but I get my intuition from this: Swiveling the open shackle when cylinder is turned does not have any change in resistance no matter how hard or lightly I torque the core. Therefore, my assumption is that the longer, attached end of the shackle does not come into contact with any locking mechanism at all. I'm guessing that this Brass shackled version is #921 according to WB's product catalog from 2020-2024.

I happened to get one of the slightly older WB padlocks, looks the same as these in the video but the logo is on one side. Same keyway that you have, and was very easy to pick open, and I impressioned a key for it in about 10 minutes. Very low quality, I was expecting better!

Most of the time I hear lock guys talk about tolerances, I suspect that the proper term is clearance Tolerance refers to acceptable deviation from the nominal dimension in manufacturing. Clearance is the space between adjacent parts.

I'm new to the hobby and can't figure out how you know how much tension to use when trying a new lock. What are you looking for?
@bosnianbill4 жыл бұрын
Mike, there is no RIGHT answer. I try heavy tension first (where the tensioner leaves a dent in my finger). If that fails, then I try light tension (where I'm barely holding the tensioner in place). If THAT doesn't work, try tensions in between until you find one that offers the best feedback. Trial and error. Also, the more you pick, the easier it will get.

@Melds4 жыл бұрын
If the pins are really rough they can work like security pins, but bad tolerance like poor alignment of the chambers makes it easier since it amplifies the binding order.

Remember the rules of lock sport. Do not pick locks that you do not own. If you do not own a lock, only pick it IF you have explicit permission of the owner of the lock to pick it. Also, never pick a lock that is in use. Violate those rules, and you become a criminal.
@davidcovington9014 жыл бұрын

Looking at that key, it looks like they cheaped out and put Chinese cores in these. What a shame lock manufacturer's keep doing this. Nice lock body and thick brass hasp, shame about the bean counters
@netking664 жыл бұрын
WB padlocks as far as I can see do not have cores (except their IC type), the pin tumbler holes are drilled in the brass case then plugged when the padlock is pinned up. Anyway they advertise 100% American made so using foreign made plugs etc would be false advertising. Possibly budget prone utilities could be tempted to use imported knock-off's especially if they offered to key them to existing WB keys. WB do need to make their padlocks as economically as possible to stay relevant in their niche market so possibly their products have gone from high quality to acceptable quality. A utility is wanting a durable and reliable padlock probably with a non-standard keyway - pick resistance would be of a secondary concern. In cases where high security is required eg major substation doors and gates, then access control systems or locks with high security mechanisms eg Abloy, BiLock, Medeco or Cyberlock or the like would be used. Conversely a failed padlock (or where key is lost or broken) on a high voltage switch handle must be capable of being removed easily eg with boltcutters.

Surely these are fakes? Chinese? Indian? The logos are quite different between the two of them, and neither is a well-done logo. They look hand-scribed, possibly with a Dremel-type tool. Not the stamped logo that the real deal would have had, surely?
