This is great! I ran into this video while searching for some information on another radio and it reminded me I have a Taiwan made HR2510 somewhere in my closet. I purchased the rig as part of a batch of three non working radios about 6 years ago, two HR2510s and one HR2600. The 2600 had a dead CPU and was used for parts. The worst looking 2510 worked like a champ after I replaced the power cord and it still works to this date. The second was a virgin 2510. I don't even think the covers had ever been removed before I did. I worked on it for a few hours but moved on to more interesting projects I had on the front burner. The rig ended up on a shelf in my closet for another couple years. The video reminded me that I was also missing some transmit voltage on several transistors and last I remember I was tracing voltages to IC104 before putting it away. Sure enough, I didn't even check them and went straight to replacing the two capacitors on the video and WHALA! The rig is transmitting like a champ on all bands now. I did not have 220uf 10V caps so I used a couple of NOS 220uf 25V I had in my junk box. Thank you!

Most excellent insight and troubleshooting, Sir! I had recently been handed the same model with no transmit, but my focus was toward the programming chip rather than a physical problem. Will bench it again tomorrow, and based on your research and approach, will attempt to bring this HR2510 out of it's "storage blues." It's funny how many people tend to put white paint in the knob indicator indents. This is something Uniden should have done for the 2510/2830/2600/LINCOLN. They painted them on the Radio Shack model HTX-100, which use the same exact knobs. I've owned numerous 2510's, a couple 2600's and a Lincoln over the years but nowadays I have but a single 2510 left in near perfect condition. I had a spare logic board with a ChipSwitch installed so I swapped it out to be able to operate the 12-meter band, which it does to perfection.

Heh, between caps and zener diodes, probably 90% of what's thrown out that's broken (vs. what's thrown out just because it's not wanted anymore which is going to be a lot more than you'd expect). If it's power supply problems, caps is always the first thing to check! I've got a small digikey box that's filling up with dead caps I've replaced in all kinds of stuff. There's probably less than 10 or 15 non-cap parts vs the rest of the box full of caps!

Nice simple and good logical fault finding there. You probably will find that the other 220/10 caps will fail in the next few years as well, probably would be best to proactively change them if 2 were either low or dead already, using 220/16 or even 220/25 caps.

Thanks for the video OM. I have the same radio and it is "deaf" and the rx signal strength meter is always pegged. I am inspired to give troubleshooting another try.
@qrplife10 жыл бұрын
Thanks again to OM W2AEW For the inspiration to troubleshoot. I dug out my "deaf" HR2600 and with a schematic in hand started to look at the expected voltages along the received signal path. The first transistor (Q1) had the correct voltage on the collector and base, but the emitter was way off, 6v instead of less that a volt. I traced the control of this voltage back to the RF gain pot. One side of the pot was supposed to be at ground but was not close(again about 6v). Turns out the pcb trace on the sub board that connects the RF gain pot to ground was broken. I patched it by soldering a small piece of wire across the gap and the rig receives just fine again. And the signal strength meter operates normally now.

Thanks Alan. When I fixed my Cobra CB radio, I found a 1/8 watt resistor that had a broken lead. Looking at it with my digital microscope, it looked like the lead had slightly been bent back & forth many times until it broke. Seeing how that is impossible inside the case, can a resistor operating at it's wattage limit, vibrate until the lead snaps? That's the only excuse I can come up with. The lead had no cut mark or scratch. I replaced it with a 1/4 watt resistor and it works great.

Hi Alan Something else for the Viewers to consider is employing the use of a "Low Ohms" (ESR Meter) to test the ESR of the Capacitors when doing these Shoots. Although it probably would not have he provided much direction in this case ESR Meters have one very elegant property, they can measure the ESR of a capacitor while its in circuit. There is no need to desolder the cap from the board in order to use an ESR Meter. They are an effective time saver plus it reduces the wear-and-tear on the PCB from desoldering and resoldering capacitors.
@w2aew10 жыл бұрын
Bob Marston True - but you have to apply common sense too. High ESR is only one of many failure modes for caps, so it won't catch everything. Also, other good caps in parallel with a "bad" cap will hide the bad cap from showing a poor ESR. In this particular case, the two 220uF caps were in parallel. So, even if the "weak" cap that I replaced first did have a faulty ESR reading, the shorted "bad" cap would have made the the ESR reading look good.

I was wondering where you get your service manuals? I have an HR2510 and feel I might have some capacitors going bad. If I leave the radio off for a while and turn it on, nothing happens for about 15 minutes like there is no power then it is turned on, then the LCD shows information and the transmit and receive start working after that 15 or 20 minutes almost like it is warming up. After that it seems to work normally each day. Only happens when it is off for an extended period of time.
@w2aew8 жыл бұрын
I usually try to find service manuals online, or I'll order them from someone like manualman.com. In the case of the 2510, the owner of the rig provided the manual, and it was returned to him after the rig was repaired. Sounds like a very strange problem you have. I'd start by measuring the internal power supply voltages during this weird warm-up time.

When an aging radio like this particular one comes after a long storage the caps are always suspicious. At that age (over 20-25 years) we automatically replace most of the electrolytic caps to spare time and avoid the customer to come back after a while.

w2aew, thanks for the video. I do have a question about the tx button on the front panel. I just bought my first 2510 and everything is perfect except no tx. It had an older Astatic power mic included. (4pin) It looks like someone replaced the stock 5pin mic connector on the face plate with a 4pin. At first, I thought it was the mic/wiring because when I tried another microphone...as soon as I plugged it in the tx light comes on. when I release the ppt the tx goes off. (I know weird) Long story short...since I don't have a working mic, (yet) can I use the tx button just for troubleshooting? when I push the tx button I see the tx on the lcd but no AM/FM power on meter. thank you for any info!!!!!

Yes, this would be MUCH harder to do without the schematic and layout diagrams. It is common to simply blindly re-cap older equipment. That would've fixed this unit, but that's more of a brute force approach.

+Brian Streufert Is it possible - maybe. Difficult? Most likely. You'd have to change at least of the local oscillator PLL's operating frequency, and rebuild any 10/11m band dependent filters (TX LPF), as well as likely having to tweak the frequency response of the RF front end.

I have a Robyn 505 with the opposite problem. It stays keyed when you turn it on, regardless of mic on the radio or off. It does indeed transmit as I can hear it monitoring from another radio. I am not really interested in this radio but for the purpose of getting my feet wet in diagnosing and repairing. Shorted cap? I have 2 2510s. The one thing I would recommend to anyone is this....don't store them for years at a time. They need to be used to keep the caps formed and working.
@w2aew2 ай бұрын
It's possible. You'd have to work your way through the circuit to see where the keying line or function is being dragged to where it shouldn't. Might be as simple as a short near the mic connector.
