Bill, This is a cylinder from the discontinued Grade 1 spherical knob, the "COPENHAGEN" design. Yale eventually let it go because the special cost of the cylinder did not justify the product especially since the industry was shifting to levers for both commercial and residential applications. Litchfield was a round knob with a flattened face. I could check price books to see when it was discontinued but it was quite a while ago. Also, it required a blank with a longer neck. The standard #8 Yale was modified for a while to reach all the way in but it looked awful. Yale still has a Carolina design but it is constructed like Schlage Orbit or Arrow Ball, i.e., the knob is indented toward the spindle so the perfectly spherical knob is no more, except on mortise locks. Best regards, Jerome

Morning Bill! I have one of those, it's just an old Yale KiK out of an antique knob. I think I chucked the knob back when I didn't care about the history behind it but I kick myself now for doing so.

I hear you. Years ago we bought a house in DC built in the 30s. I "improved" things by replacing all the antique door hardware with new, shiny stuff. All the knobs were ceramic... now worth a pretty penny.

Yep, Yale, the plastic is to require a half cut key head underneath, key in knob cylinder.. if the key doesn’t come with the head cut design the key will not go all the way in.

I am presently at the lockpicking skill level where I mash pins and sometimes the locks open. I practice nearly every day, spending at least some time on each of the now 15 or so locks I have. I have never had a day when I was able to open all of them, and I have had days where I opened none of them(?!) I did finally opened my 6-pin progressive lock (once) from TOOOL LockPickExtreme set I purchased. Still using the lock pick set I bought from them, though I now have a large selection of additional tensioners. The on/off nature of my progress is both fascinating and frustrating.... - - Any feedback would be welcome, as I am an idiot..... Love the community however, especially Bosnian Bill's Tribe ie you guys! (big hugs). -ChaosMinx .

I was very much in the same boat as you. I recently picked up the Sparrows progressive lock set and that has really helped. I got the re-pinning kit with it and have transformed some of my other locks into 2 pin (1 standard, 1 spool) practice locks as well. You don't have to get the actual progressive locks. If you have a few of the tools you can make your own progressive locks.
@dusso42314 жыл бұрын
Shannon McStormy also buy some good picks and a decent amount of tension tools. The right tension tool makes a world of difference. Sparrows tuxedo and their top of the keyway set is a great start. Don’t get frustrated. Ive been doing this for well over a year and have been thwarted by cheap Chinese junk while being able to pick higher security locks.

Those new pins and springs look familiar. They might have actually bought them through locklab. Never did figure out what that plastic clip was for or the purpose of the groove it fits in, but my guess is something to do with how the cylinder fits and retained in the door or whatever it locks.

Yale Copenhagen knob cylinder. Took a blank that had what was called an enfield now. It had an offset square head. The the plastic clip was what made the enfield bow necessary. You could remove it and use a standard 6 pin blank. “Pick detector”? WTF.

If that plastic clip wasn't able to move down and out (say if the lock was flush-mounted into a door) would that make any real difference to picking it? My guess it probably not but then it begs the question of why have it?

@joeemenaker4 жыл бұрын
One reason not to use a screwdriver as a tensioner: It looks like there are some scratches or wear marks around the circumference of the front, so my guess is that, when installed, it's flush with the surface of whatever it's installed in, so, in real life, you wouldn't have the ability to have something coming radially outward from that slot. That would be cheating.

Somebody needs to invent a variable size follower.
@randyaivaz33564 жыл бұрын
Was going to say they make an Inflatable one, you pump air til correct size, but won't. Then thought since follower doesn't need to be completely round, you could have split halves, with cones on each end, with a screw through each cone, with a knurled nob, as you turn nob, it spreads to make larger, would need a spring in the middle for when loosening to make smaller?
@TesserId4 жыл бұрын
@@randyaivaz3356 Similarly, I was thinking something like spring steel. Notice that most of the followers are not complete cylinders, having an open channel. If that's allowed, then why not have one that can be flexed outward, a bit like your two halves suggestion.

Our home was located at the main fork that leads to the first bridge (upstream) UN used the divide/fork in the road to regroup and take breaks so I spent alot of time trying to conversate and ask questions as a kid as it was the only time to be I outside safely as it gave us cover knowing they wouldn't fire at the UN. One day shortly after the UN left my grandpa was getting water from a spring and as soon as the UN traveled no more than 100 yards down the road a shell was fired from the hills across the river. I will never forget the UN convoy turning around and trying to help my grandpa confused how anyone can do such thing. If you ever travel back I would gladly offer a place to stay.
