Let me get this right: It is problematic and racist for historical figures who weren't white men to be portrayed by white actors, yet it is empowering for historical figures who were white men to be portrayed as women and people of color? Sounds like a racist double standard to me.

The answer to 1984 is 1776.

Just saw it, it was great. A couple of the scenes with singing were particularly emotional and powerful: "Momma Look Sharp" and "Molasses to Rum". Worth it if you're familiar with the movie and want to see it brought to life.

This revival was nothing more than a cheap, feminist carbon copy of “Hamilton”. #ChangeMyMind
@bellescreaations Жыл бұрын
First of all 1776 was written before Hamilton. The essence of any revival cannot be a carbon copy of something that came after it. The casting does not change the essential nature of the show-and that essential nature came before Hamilton. Secondly, having people of the opposite gender play historical figures is not a modern concept. Shakespeare had young boys play all his female characters. Clearly the “cheap” clause of your argument is also underdeveloped because even if you could argue this Musical isn’t “good” per say: there was clearly a lot of money put into it. The revival of 1776 was a valuable reproduction of an interesting show. I rest my case. #ChangeMyMind

@@bellescreaationsBruh it's a Musical not a Shakespeare Play, it's not the same, Music is written for a certain register (usually a male register). And ok let's go with The Shakespeare thing, You do know that males played famale characters because women were not allowed to act right? With all due respect, let's not leave information behind.
@bellescreaations Жыл бұрын
@@ethanpech9914 Yes I am aware of the reasons behind men playing female roles. However, I believe that the gender of the people playing the roles does not influence the quality of the performance-in Shakespeare’s time and today.

@@bellescreaations It's not just about quality, it's also about pushing a political agenda and making it look "woke" and "modern", And to be fair, as I said, this does affect the quality of the product because the songs are made for certain vocal registers and when they are changed to others, the final result is not even close to what it should be. Heck Even The actress saying "Death old white guys" is offensive and implies an obvious disinterest in the stories that inspired this musical. I know, they were old white (mostly racist) men, but it was also hundreds of years ago, by referring to a whole race of people in a derogatory way you are doing the same as them. The works where men played women were under a sexist premise, casting only women into a work based of a true story is lunatic, you are repeating exactly what these Shakespearean plays you're mentioning were doing. You can't talk about diversity when you're closing your cast to just a certain group of people and ignoring history facts wich the story is based on, as an example, Hamilton may slaughter history, but at least it has true diversity.

I saw this production at the Ahmanson Theatre (Los Angeles) in April 2023. This was a "Meh" for me. A lot of Peter Stone's comedic one-line jokes were cut. I was disappointed at the last scene in Act 2, where the cast didn't simulate the scene of the signing of the "Declaration of Independence"
